An Unsung Hero @ SFC?

Role: SFC Director of Football Performance,Development and Support. Board Member

Time in role: 3-4 years

Responsible for:

Scouting and Recruitment - You don't improve as much as we have without bringing in a number of excellent players. Clyne for a £3m compensation fee looks more of a steal every game, whilst 2013 saw undoubtedly our best ever transfer window.

Sports Medicine and Exercise Science - Superb record over the last 3-4 years, huge reduction in muscle injuries

Youth Academy - Second to none in UK football. In Shaw, Chambers and JWP we three massive talents who will surely all play for England - all on long contracts. One of only 2 sides to qualify fo the latter stages both the U18 and U21 leagues last season

Management of the Football Development and Support Centre. New, state of the art training facility on the way

Kudos to Les Reed.

As we know, Nicola Cortese does not suffer fools gladly, so Reed must have impressed him too.

Why have you done this? You know it will go back to a transfer window moan by the cretins!

Done a decent job though from what I can see...I'm sure there are plenty of other unsung heroes. We've barely had any injuries over the last 5 years really. Only Chaplow and Lallana I can think of?

Those "cretins" shouldnt put off a good debate about someone who has taken a lot of stick but clearly delivered well against the objectives he has.

Of course there are lots of unsung heroes but not many with as vital a remit as his.

Most likely he also had a big say in the two successful managerial changes.

He was brought in primarily for an administrative role overseeing the implementation of a proper sports science division, academy set up and international scouting team.

Despite his obvious previous failings as a manager it was clear to anyone not on the wind up that we were moving in the right direction under his guidance and that he had a fair amount of knowledge in this area

Nobody really can complain about the position we are in now and so obviously he has done his job very well.

When was this?

Are you joking? Type Les Reed into the search bar and see the post above yours for the kind of comments people used to make when he was appointed and shortly after.

Here is a start:

As was said at the time of his appointment, keep him away from any sort of coaching or first team management and leave him to administration and planning and he'll do alright, he's always been very highly regarded in that area.

So he's good at shuffling paper, not so good at anything to do with football, yes?

He has to take some credit, but also responsibility for spending £27million on Ramirez and Osvaldo.

It's great noshing ourselves off at the moment but it would be fair to remember that Rupert Lowe had us 4th in the Premier League at Christmas one year, and look how that turned out. It would be interesting to compare his net spend with the current lots.

Clearly his net spend was lower, resulting in relegation shortly afterwards.

This the best most well balanced post of this thread... There was a certain centre half too that didn't even play a game.... Not by any means is this guy covered in glory for our present success.... If Osvaldo doesn't make it that would be 30m spent on three players that were not good enough....

Let's not get carried away with the hype and keep feet on the ground and praise in perspective. Some very good players signed and some very average ones too.......

£30 million spent on those players, which could probably be recouped from their resale. The conclusion isn't that those players arent good enough, as they both play for their international teams. Whether they have adapted to playing in English football, or even whether they can adapt to Saint's style of play is more the point.

Every major team has brought in players who were deemed to be top quality and who then were not successful for those clubs. Many then went elsewhere and became the players that they had promised to be. All that you can do is look at the bigger picture, which currently shows that the team is better than any Saints team over the past 30 years or so. The players we have recruited recently, together with the core we had and the rising stars of our academy have all played their part in that success. And Les Reid has been integral to a lot of that development, so deserves some credit.

I suspect that Suewhistle is capable of reading exactly the same posts that I read via posters quoting him. The ignore function is farcical when that happens.

This. I have him on ignore, and still have the pleasure of reading a large proportion of his contributions.

Must admit due to previous experience/info would have been glad to see the back of him....even to the FA at Burton...

Peeps who make the decisions...saw some expertise there somewhere...admin ..co-ordinating, managing non footer teams,,,,so good luck to him/them.:)

Well done Uncle Les.......but I still have the same request....stay away from the football squads and leave to Manager/coach and staff.

Allow the Manager the decision on who he wants or does not want re Ist team squad.

Carry on as we are and all will be dandy.:D

I'm gonna pop Turkish on ignore then, as I seem to miss most of his contributions usually.

I would.

One of the most hilarious things about being on peoples ignore list is that certian posters who regularly announce it, still continue to comment and reply on my posts.

I never said either of them are poor buys, just put our current success into context. We have spent a sh!t load of cash, Lowe got us to 4th at Xmas on a relative shoestring.

Sorry to be pedantic, but when was this? The time I remember when Saints were 4th (which led to the famous Strachan quote about going home and looking at Ceefax) was in 03/04 when we drew first 3 then won next 3 (only to lose the following 3). There's a big difference between 4th after 6 games and at Xmas.

We were 4th Xmas day 2003 after beating the Skates 3-0.
