Sour Mash Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 Why are people so obsessed with what he cost? It's not coming out of your pocket, is it? More likely, it's coming from Sky and the other companies paying silly amounts to play games on their tv stations around the world. Also the reason fees for all teams have gone up. People still don't seem to understand this. Basic opportunity cost principle isn't it. It's reasonable to think we could have got more of a return from our investment than we have to date. Lord Duckhunter Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 People who are trying to compare Gaston's situation with Bale, Ramsey or even Walcott are living in cloud cuckoo land. Ramsey was returning from a horrific injury which will have affected him mentally as well as physically. Bale and Walcott (like it or not) were signed from a smaller club that were a division lower. Gaston was signed from a top flight club in a top flight footballing country. The other big difference is Walcot and Bale got slowly better and better, Gaston is standing still at best. If Redknapp or Fat Sam signed Gaston and he'd performed like he has, what would this board say , "he'll come good", "give him time", "he's young and in a foregin Country", "he doesn't suit their system". I doubt it, it would be more evidence of how dodgey or what mugs of Managers they are. Tim Vickery said all along he had concerns about him in the Premiership and of course there was the cumtomery thread questioning Vickery's knowledge, but listen to this at 5.30 (after the annoying advert). He's got it pretty much spot on, and that's before the Olympics, so he wasn't being wise after the event. Interesting that he says despite being rated by his Country, he "hasn't quite cut it". That sums up his time at Saints perfectly. http://talksport.com/radio/hawksbee-and-jacobs/120607/vickery-why-ramirez-would-not-be-good-signing-spurs-173873

NickG Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 Some seem to enjoy finding things to moan about / be pessimistic and frequently proven wrong. They won't change. If proven wrong on Ramirez it will be added to long list of the 'I'm happy to be proven wrong / we all want same / easy in hindsight' etc we have after we didn't settle for play off in league 1, amazingly Morgan and JayRod suddenly aren't crap, Norwich are not leaving us behind, the club aren't deluded to aim for top 6-8 this season etc. Give up trying to change them - and quoting them! I think what they struggle to understand is; less than £20m does not buy you Bale or Messi. For every Lovren / Coutinhio there are more signings (including English ones) who take while to teach their potential. A transfer fee for young international is not lost money. I do not understand the dislike shown for Ramirez. I am disappointed that the home game against Villa hasn't been replicated but why the abuse? (Apart from attention seeking from those shown not to know much and probably never seen him play!) Last season; Stats for all midfield/ toward players playing over 1000 mins- Minutes per goal or assist; JayRod 138 Lambert 142 Puncheon 171 Ramirez 212 Lallana 248 Guly 506 Davis 540 Schneiderlin 544 Cork 2597 Not bad for youngest, newest signing, who was hospitalised with internal leg bleeding!! Also he won free kicks for Lambert to score on at least two occasions with his direct running. Alpine moans about his sending off (he was wrong to lose cool etc) however fails to mention that he did more in short time he was on in that game than rest did in 90! His main problem is form of JWP - hardly his fault! When has played other fan forums rate him. Sure other clubs would support him, see good as well as failings and hope he comes good - but not here! Squad game - has a lot to offer so why the hate? Jealousy? Where he comes from? Outdated view of fees? Let's attack Cork - he has done a lot less this season! Bucks Saint Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 Yeah, lets allow his contract to run down and part with another 10,000 ST revenues. Why? I did not say that. Was responding to nonsense suggestion that the Club bought him knowing it would take 2 years for him to settle in.

Barry Sanchez Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 (edited) Can we have details of the above, please? Of course Wesleymondo, since 31st August 2012 "El Gash" as he is known on the South Coast of England has been lazy and uninterested. Thats a quote from the Bazley Gazette last week. Saint Garrett Posted 5 November, 2013 Share Posted 5 November, 2013 Thats fine, what about the lack of fitness, effort and endeavour? His fitness is questionable, but his effort certainly is not. Just because he is not flying into tackles and sprinting about like Chaplow, doesn't mean he's not putting effort in.

SaintBobby Posted 6 November, 2013 Share Posted 6 November, 2013 Probably adding wages in. At worst, we will sell him for, say, £8m? If it doesn't work out, such is life. When you're paying big salaries and transfer fees, you take some knocks. At worst, our "loss" on Ramirez - including wages - will be about £6m. But that assumes that his overall value to the team has been absolute zero. Even his biggest detractors won't claim this, he's scored a few goals and has actually been pretty good in a few games. JoeShmoe Posted 7 November, 2013 Share Posted 7 November, 2013 Was last night the final nail in the coffin? Either he genuinely isnt good enough or he just doesn't fit into this team at all but his effort level and body language weren't good at all Amazed now if e doesnt go in Jan, either on loan or permanently, for his own sake as much as ours (in a WC year)
John McGrath's Jockstrap Posted 7 November, 2013 Share Posted 7 November, 2013 Standing back it is very interesting to see how Ramirez has divided opinion in this forum. Even more entertaining is to see the vitriolic and playground banter between regular "contributors" to this website. Frankly as a dedicated Saints fan for over 30 years it is ridiculous to read. Fact is Ramirez at 23 years made the wrong decision for us and for him to come to this club. A Southern European side would have been the right choice for him but his agent influenced his decision to come here to his, and our, detriment. An undeniably talented player who has arrived here like a fish on a quayside. Sad but true. If we want to have a discussion about value we should reflect on Ramirez's contribution to that of Steve Davis......we all know what represents the best value. The manager of this club and the Don will make the right decision about his future. It will not surprise him or me if he departs in Jan.....and he should go for both parties benefit. Frankly at the level we are trying to aspire to taking a hit of £5m + is not the issue. Ensuring we do not impair the progress of others more suited to the club, the Prem League, and the advancement of the club is.
Barry Sanchez Posted 8 November, 2013 Share Posted 8 November, 2013 The manager of this club and the Don will make the right decision about his future. Eventually we hope, Ramirez has had two different managers with different styles so thats can not be a factor, he is simply uninterested and not bothered, when his infamous quote of they offered me so much money to come here statement the writing was on the wall as such. AussieDog Posted 8 November, 2013 Share Posted 8 November, 2013 For the money paid, I would like him to be good enough for the first team, but we're always whinging about not having strength in depth. I think it's reassuring to think we can have a current Uruguayan international on our bench. If he can step his game up and be better than the likes of Lallana and JWP then we really will have a great player on our hands. Having said that...if we sell him in Jan and get in someone even better I won't complain
