SaintBobby Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 Thoughts on this (double) question? I can see that it might impede our forward progress in the league next year if we were to, say, come 6th and qualify and participate. On the other hand, could/should we basically just play our second string in Europe (Kelvin, Yoshida, Cork, Lee, Hoovield, Chambers, Fox, Guly, Ramirez (?!), Isgrove etc etc)? (Also, anyone know what the rules are? Would we be forced to take part? Would we be under any obligation to play our "strongest XI"?)
ericofarabia Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 Maybe we could nominate Skatesmyth to play our Euro games for us? If we were to qualify through the farcical Fair Play League then maybe not participating is an option, but getting there by finishing high enough in the league, or one of the cups (even as runner up to a CL placed team) is what all teams should be aiming for at the start of each season FFS.
SaintBobby Posted 29 October, 2013 Author Posted 29 October, 2013 Don't have a strong opinion myself. But interesting that MP implied a couple of weeks back that he wasn't too keen on Europa League (although really just saying he'd prefer the CL, I guess). Additionally, didn't we say last season that we wouldn't take the fair play slot even if we'd won it?
whelk Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 Decline ffs? Would put us in same bracket as Utd opting out of FA Cup which was scandalous and fckers should have been banned from comp for next 10 years.

The whole point is to get better and by that we have to play in Europe. If this year it is that worse of the two leagues, so be it, but there can be no way we decline!
trousers Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 If there's one thing I've learned as a Saints fan over the last 5 years its to expect the unexpected.
Scoobysaint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I would rather we finish seventh than sixth. Basically I don't want the Europa league after seeing what it did to Newcastle previously and to a certain extent Swansea. Our squad can't cope with that many games and we can't and shouldn't expect our younger players to play fifty games a season.
northam soul Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 How arrogant can we possibly get. Who do we think we are thinking we could decline to play in a European cup that we have qualified for through merit over a whole season. Ridiculous to even have those thoughts, we should be honoured to even get there if we do.

Ridiculous to even have those thoughts, we should be honoured to even get there if we do. Everything Cortese's done over the last 4 years or so has been laced with 'arrogance' (aka 'extreme confidence in doing things 'the Southampton way'). What makes you think he would act 'normally' when it comes to considering whether we play in Europe's second rate competition? If Cortese is thinking 'champions league qualification' (which I believe he is) then there's every chance playing in the Europa league could hinder our chances of qualifying for the champions league in the same season. Of course, it could have the opposite effect...who knows... I know this is the sort of 'pie in the sky' post that gets the thought police juices flowing on here, but all I'm saying is that I would not be surprised in the slightest if Cortese stuck two fingers up at the Europa League if we were to qualify. It equally wouldn't surprise me if he embraced it.
skintsaint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I hope we wouldn't as its a winnable trophy.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 Im looking for some random Euro city breaks

I think the CL could just about scrape by without Euro megaclub Southampton.
Appy Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I hope not, I'd love to be watching Saints with about 150 others in Moldova.
alpine_saint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 Seeing as our last participation in the UEFA Cup probably helped bring about our demise, I would suggest that the OP is not entirely without reason. Personally, think it would be daft to qualify then not take part, but would like us to have a real go at it this time.
Sour Mash Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I hope not, I'd love to be watching Saints with about 150 others in Moldova. Love the look of Spurs' current group, three proper European trips. Of course we should take a place in the Europa League, we're only 3 or 4 positions off having a fairly strong 2nd 11.

Turning down the Europa League because of qualifying through fair play is one thing, point blank refusing to play in it after winning a cup or finishing top 6 is completely nuts and would never happen. I hope we do qualify. I want more away trips like the one to Bucharest.
The Cat Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 What's your thinking behind your first sentence? Those 2 grueling games against Steaua really took it out of the team. I was surprised we didn't get relegated in 2004 because of them.
alpine_saint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 What's your thinking behind your first sentence? My mistake. It was the year before relegation. I still think its valid that we make sure we have squad depth and mental strength to take on another Cup, if invited to take part.
fish fingers Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I would hope that if we declined a Europa league spot that UEFA would ban us from any european competition for many years.
Sour Mash Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 We won't 'decline' a Europa spot. Will be interesting to see how seriously we take the League Cup if we beat Sunderland (which I don't think we will).
John Boy Saint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I can understand why we would turn down a FairPlay place, Fulham got that a couple of seasons ago and from what I recall they were into pre qualifying rounds when everyone else was just into pre season, they did well but ran out of steam as a result
trousers Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 (edited) http://www.theguardian.com/football/2011/may/18/tottenham-fulham-europa-league In order to play in the Champions League or the Europa League clubs have to have a Uefa licence and the list of those who have applied and meet the criteria is sent off to Uefa in June. A club not wanting to participate in Europe the following season, for whatever reason, therefore has a very simple get-out – just don't apply for a licence. In that case, should a club without a licence qualify in the Champions League or Europa League places then the spot drops one place down the league. If a club refuses to enter the competition, having qualified for it on sporting merit and obtained a licence from the competent national body, no other club from the same national association may be entered in its place and the access list for the Uefa club competitions (Annex Ia) is rebalanced accordingly; furthermore, in such a case, the coefficient of the association concerned is calculated in accordance with the specific rule laid down in Annex II, point 6. I still think its valid that we make sure we have squad depth and mental strength to take on another Cup, if invited to take part. I really don't think the squad needs to be that much bigger. Remember in league one we ended up playing something like 56 games? We didn't have a mega huge squad then and we did alright, I seem to remember quite a few players playing over 50 games for us that season.
Barry Sanchez Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 9 games in and the tickets are already booked by the clappers................

alpine_saint Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 (edited) Wasnt the use of "Gashton" I was applauding, 'twas the comparison of you "buy a dog turd if it has the SFC crest on it" brigade with a series of brainless performing seals at a (circus / oceanarium)* *delete depending on your own personal level of tw*ttery Edited 29 October, 2013 by alpine_saint
Saint Charlie Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 I've never seen a seal at a circus? Or a dog turd with a Saints FC crest on it? If there was one The Gash would probably slip over in it! :D:D Wonder how he reacted when Alps called him that in Austria during pre season - would have been class to see.
Special K Posted 29 October, 2013 Posted 29 October, 2013 We'd be silly not to compete in the Europa league. Some cracking away days would be had.
