NickG Posted 28 October, 2013 Share Posted 28 October, 2013 More disrespect for our history by taking down the pictures of former glories and replacing them with marketing slogans. You really are a strange poster.... Most would have had their attention grabbed by.. The message is clear: Southampton believe they are on the verge of something special. They are starting to convince the rest of the country. Their ascent has been spectacular. This emphatic win over Fulham extended the club's best start to a top-flight campaign and means they have soared from the third tier of English football to third in the Premier League in only three years. The money invested by the Liebherr family has helped but the rise of the Saints is down to more than that: it is also thanks to expert youth development and, since last January, the uplifting management of Mauricio Pochettino...by turning a decent team into one who are exceptionally dynamic, wonderfully enterprising and increasingly confident. "All the players have improved since I have been here," Pochettino said. "It is very satisfying for me to see their evolution in 10 months." The most obvious difference is reflected in the team's defensive record – after nine league games last term Southampton had conceded 26 goals; at the same stage this season they have let in only three, making them the meanest team in the league. ... Or Such has been Southampton's defensive improvement that Fonte has been tipped for a call-up to the Portugal squad for the World Cup play-off against Sweden. Similarly, there are suggestions in France that the midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin deserves a place in their team, while, of course, there is an array of talent at the club that Roy Hodgson could take with England to Brazil. Lambert was one of six Englishmen who started the rout of Fulham and the others are all much younger, including the teenagers Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse, fruit of the club's academy. At a time when England are fretting about their ability to cultivate youngsters, the performances this season of the likes of Shaw, Ward-Prowse, Adam Lallana and Calum Chambers suggest Southampton could teach the FA a thing or two. Or Pochettino is aware that if Southampton continue to thrive, bigger clubs may seek to prise away their prized youngsters, as happened with Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. "That is something that is out of our hands," he said. "We cannot avoid other clubs being interested in our young players. We will do as much as we can to make sure they are here for a very long time Or Playing like this will make it very hard for anyone to leave and could enable Southampton to take one of those big clubs' places in the Champions League. But no, a moan! Time to accept that it wasn't NC and MP who were deluded when looking at our potential but you! DuncanRG Posted 28 October, 2013 Share Posted 28 October, 2013 (edited) LOL at some of those values. I don't think they're too far off what a seller would be after. Obviously we wouldn't sell for those prices (if any) but if we wanted to sell Shaw, Lallana etc then that's probably what they'd go for. Dalglish's Liverpool would have spunked £23m on Adam though At 25, can anyone see Lallana leaving or is he a one club man? I think we'd all like to see it, but as with all our players it depends on the level they reach and whether we can match it. Jamie Redknapp said on saturday that if we put Lovern on the market now then he'd be worth £15-£20m. Wanyama and Schinderlin in the £10-£12m bracket and Ramirez probably £8m you've got nearly another £50m from those 4 alone.

Well as we paid 12.5 milion for Wanyama I'd hope he's not worth less than that now, we turned down 14 million for Schneiderlin in July from Sociedad so there again 10 to 12 is on the low side. The current Saints squad probably has a market value in the 120/130 million range.
NickG Posted 28 October, 2013 Share Posted 28 October, 2013 He's obviously being sarcastic/trolling. How is that not blindingly obvious to you? GOD! It was, but point was his posts are either this, his hilarious ones about press, or slating talk of the club targeting top 6 as deluded. Thought strange reaction to that article... ....but to be fair my reaction to his reaction probably not the best! Back to thread.. Think key factor is what teams would our players want to go to? Some will inevitably leave, happens to every club. But wouldn't say its a given that everyone would jump for the top clubs. If they are furthering career here, paid well, rate NC & MP, enjoying team spirit, getting international recognition some may choose to stay. It's what a buyer would hope to pay. And where there are potentially several buyers, as in the case of Shaw, and those buyers are wealthy clubs, the price would rocket far beyond 13 million. Furthermore, as we probably don't wish to sell any of those players, we can command a price deemed to be ridiculous normally, on the basis that the buyer puts up or shuts up. qwertySFC Posted 28 October, 2013 Share Posted 28 October, 2013 The academy is the asset which so many clubs are envious of - look at the teams who have brought a team and discarded a youth policy , I can remember a little while ago someone at the club, may have been Nigel Atkins, who talked about the next crop coming through were exceptional - JWP, Chambers, Shaw, and I'm sure the next batch see their way forward now which can only enhance hier development , the doors are open for them. Long may it continue.
St_Tel49 Posted 28 October, 2013 Share Posted 28 October, 2013 I may just be a blind optimist but I cannot see why any of them would want to leave at the moment. I suspect that we can match most wages that would be offered and they are all an important part of something special that is happening. I think that there is enough camaraderie for them to want to see it through together. Besides, I think that the Don will just say no.

I'm not even sure one of the really big teams would prise away the people that are playing every game at the moment. It's different when we're struggling - even a top performer will think the rewards are better in a bigger side. When we getting the results that we are at the moment and no-one can tell how the season is going to turn out (in a really good way, not like usual) I think it's difficult for players to be sure they won't regret the move. Window Cleaner Posted 29 October, 2013 Share Posted 29 October, 2013 I thought I'd seen a stat somewhere that we had one of the lower shots on goal against us tallys? Highly likely, Artur saves 88% of the shots so in theory 12% equals the 3 goals we've conceded so that would mean we've only had about 25 shots on target against us ( not blocked by our players I suppose) in our 9 games this season.
