Baton down the hatches! :-D

Here in East Berkshire, there's little more than a bit of wind at present and some light showers. What's the weather like where you lot are? Are you looking forward/dreading the big storm? Will it truly be a "killer" storm, or just a damp squib that the media have overhyped?

Not much happening at the Eastern end of the Channel, although it's not supposed to hit till after midnight. Peversely it's quieter than it's been all day at the moment.

The calm before the storm?

Incidentally, some pictures of the storm have hit Twitter...

Well, southern electric is worried, all on emergency shift, planned work cancelled, asked to cancel holidays

Somethings coming in, think we have avoided the worst of it, but we will take a bit of a hit.

Due to hit me on Exmoor at midnight. It's been windy all day but now it's relatively still, ominously still...

This site is great for tracking the beasty in real time.

Jealous, I love Exmoor.

Hammering down out here near Lymington and my conservatory too has a leak !

Pouring it down in Romsey, but not as windy as earlier, strange.....Calm before the storm?

The track seems to be heading along the south coast though, not as far north as predicted.

Something to do with compensation - if they cancel the service now, they don't have to pay compo if any were running late tomorrow.

More, I believe, that they want to send special trains down the lines to check for fallen tree's etc before sending normal passenger services.

For anyone who can read them there are animated timeframe charts on netweather.com. From midday they have shown a forecast of heavy rain for a period which with the low pressure front is pretty standard however the wind charts show the worst winds in mid channel off east sussex and east of Dover. The winds are shown peaking about midnight dropping off rapidly to about 0300. The strongest winds, mid forties in this area are shown south of the IOW slowing northwards and dropping into the 20/30 band just north of the mainland coast.

I hope it's not too severe for you guys in the south . Those sorts of winds are an occupational hazard up here . We regularly get 60miles plus an hour winds up here . We had one last Wednesday . We just get on with life

I'm hoping the old knackered 50 foot conifer in the corner of our garden doesnt get blown down. Could cause a problem for the neighbours, that.

Stuck in an office building in North Baddesley after answering an alarm call out. Power is out and it is blowing an absolute hooley. Tree detritus and fallen branches on the roads between winchester and here. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty bad

Spent the night in a motorhome in Porlock on the Somerset coast. Pretty wild but still intact.

The track shows the worst headed further south than expected. Glad we escaped the New Forest yesterday!

I'm just around the bay from the Needles where 99mph winds were clocked but we are relatively sheltered so no damage this morning !

Our (small) road is blocked though due to some big branches having come down, I offered to help my neighbour to clear it to the one side but he said that the council would only come and clear it away if the road was actually blocked so he left it !

It's his tree so I didn't argue but some poor buggers will have to take a short diversion to get anywhere !!

2 fence panels and some detritus from the oak trees - was blooming windy at 5am, but nothing much to show for it. They clocked 75mph at Hurn just round the corner - not as bad as expected.

Our food waste bin blew over into the front garden and some food almost tipped out.

My partner's mum who lives near Brighton was so concerned she decided to sit up all night incase anything happened (it didn't)

Well we've had no power for over 9 hours now, and have been given no idea when it might come back on.

The weird thing is that it didn't go off until after the storm had passed by.
