Stoke Build Up Thread

This will be our toughest game of the season, in my opinion.

We did amazing to beat Liverpool, but you need to remember that they were all over the show that day with a random formation that simply didn't work. Utd were just out of any sort of form, as Stoke also proved - almost.

Stoke on the other hand are still a tough nut to crack, but they've got a little more verve in their play now and will have some confidence.

This could be our toughest test yet. Sure, Stoke aren't the best side in the league, but look how the like of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool have struggled to get a result in the last few years. If we're serious about finishing high up the table, then this is one we have to win. Sadly, I think it might end up 2-1 to Stoke

Yes really. They are a different prospect this season. Still strong, but more football, less hoof.

Taken a while to settle to the new style, but now playing some decent stuff. With string support, they'll be tough.

They've picked up 2 points from the last 6 games. I reckon we'll comfortably dominate the game, whether we actually score the goals is less certain as usual!

I agree with this. They aren't a very good side. Doesn't mean we will dominate them, or win, but no point hyping them up to be something they are not.

They struggle to score goals in the league, and have let in more than in recent seasons.

If they try to play from the back it will get them into trouble because the defenders aside from Pieters aren't great on the ball.

Agree with this - they looked very good at OT last week and were unlucky to get a point according to many pundits. It will be a really tough test for us, but I think we should be good for a 0-0

I think that Stoke away is a very tricky match and a draw will be a good result - a win will be fantastic.

I'd normally take a point away vs anyone, but I wouldn't bite ur hand off this time. Given the circumstances of our respective form, their playing in midweek and the managerial handicap of Mark Hughes, I reckon we have a good chance for the win. Even the dumb bookies have us favourites!

Have a quick browse at their forum. You'll find they're not confident, they're unfit, the atmosphere has been awful at the Brit, and bar turning up for an hour at Old Trafford, they haven't been very good. Was just saying what I saw.

I would bring Davis in for JWP if he's fit. Rationale is that Davis is better in the interplay around the oppositions box and I don't think this is a game where JWP's crossing and delivery will be as effective.

JWP is such a good crosser of the ball that his crossing and delivery will always be effective. Without it we may not have got 4 points at OT and Anfield.

I expect Stoke to go revert to type a bit in this game and try and go long a bit more than they would usually. Playing midweek means preparation won't have been the best and Hughes knows it'll be tough to counter a high pressing game by trying to match it so I think he'll try to use a big out ball when he can and take the pressure off that way. His teams are generally hard to beat anyway and Stoke have been pretty miserly in conceding at home recently so can't see this being a good game for goals - set pieces will be both sides best bet.

Hopefully we start the game with the same lineup as against Fulham and the same gameplan - none of the players deserve to be dropped and if Davis and Osvaldo are fit again then the bench looks strong. A similar performance and we'd be very unlucky to lose this one. Just hope we don't try to vary things around and try something new in a bid to outfox the opponents - we're good enough now to go up there and play our own game and let them worry about us. 0-1 Saints.

Yeah, Revolution has said it really. Stoke will 'go long' rather than play it out along the pitch. They will have Crouch and Anarticulatigo (sp.) calling for high balls, so Lovren and Fonte will need to have a spring in their step. Huth and Shawcross are rough and tough at the back and Rickie will have to contend with holding and elbows. However, I do think our midfield is way superior to theirs, so if we can boss it and dictate the play, we can take this one. I'll take a scrappy 0-1 win.

If they play 2 up front they will hoof it & we may struggle, but we can still press their defence to stop the supply.

Draw in my opinion 2-2.

One way to defeat a press maybe to play long balls, but Poch knows that. Lovren and Wanyama offer the aggressive physical presence to counter that.

If I were an opponent I wouldnt want to play against Saints right now - we've no obvious weaknesses at the back.

Can you see us conceding 2 having only conceded 3 so far? 1-1 maybe, 0-0 more likely, yes ... but I don't think we'll let in 2.

In principle yes, but...

Just because we have only let in 3 so far, we could easily let in 2 or 3 in this game if we don't defend well. Of course our defensive record is great, but other teams like Utd, Swansea etc could easily have scored more against us and you are very unlikely to keep this sort of record for long.

Despite their adverts, all rail ticket websites charge the same prices, except for the small booking fees etc. It is extremely unusual for prices to be different between any websites - they are all identical 99.9% of the time. What may have happened is that the discount for buying early may have changed on the system while you were actually loggged on (this is just unlucky on timing), and the national rail site was just slow in processing the change. It is rare and should not happen - it should be simultaneous. Bore fest over, sorry

I guess so, very unlucky though I must say, none of the other prices changed on the other trains IIRC.

Not only that, theyve informed us there wont be any free beer in the first class carridge, disgraceful.

At the barbours earlier, I predicted a 2-1 Saints victory, "oh wow" he exclaimed "you think youre gonna let one in?"!

Our dream is real.

Hughes: "In terms of individual quality, I don't think there is much difference between the two teams".

How does Hughes explain the difference in our relative league position then? His poor management?

Stoke are still a horrible bunch of thugs.

Saw them vs Arsenal at the Emirates a month or so back, and it is so cynical. They were literally taking turns to clatter into Wilshire, who in fairness did give one wild lunge back and was lucky not to see red I thought. They were swinging at Ozil too, but simply couldn't get near him.

I'd be tempted to play Davis for this reason.

FFS sort this out. I only pressed it once and sat waiting for it to load for ages!

Surprised at the pessimism from some. Saints are a better team than Stoke so it follows that Saints should win. The way we play also seems to negate home advantage. As always in football, there is an element of luck, one side can have one chance and score whilst another can make a dozen chances and have them all close misses or saves, but unless we are very unlucky, I see us winning this game.

Will it be the usual black kit?

Is it allowed for both teams to have the same colour on the short, I didn´t think so but looking at Sunderland-Newcastle last weekend it seems so now...??

We both had white shorts at Old Trafford I think didn't we?

True, didn´t think about that.

That answers it then, but I still think it wasn´t allowed some years ago but maybe that changed and that´s why not so many teams have a third kit anymore...
