Stoke Build Up Thread

Sounds like Hughes is playing the first team in the cup tonight, and they arent too young a team so definately a winnable game on Saturday as we will be fresh. Keep same team as the weekend, going for 2-0 Jay R and Fonte.

Definately winnable. Are Stoke better than Fulham? Maybe marginally but our amazing football, IF we keep the same team should surely see them off....

21:37 GOAL- Birmingham 3-3 Stoke - Peter Lovenkrands

Wow. Some comeback this for Birmingham. Extra-time beckons after Peter Lovenkrands scores his second goal in quick succession after coming off the bench, again ghosting into the area to get on the end of a cross.

FULL-TIME - Birmingham 3-3 Stoke

We will indeed need extra-time to separate the two teams at St Andrew's. They are huddled on the pitch as I write this. Stoke looked home and dry too. Enter Peter Lovenkrands, who only came on after 79 minutes.

Stoke City

29 Sørensen

05 Muniesa

12 Wilson

08 Palacios

17 Shawcross

04 Huth

07 Pennant (Shea - 76' Booked )

15 N'Zonzi

10 Arnautovic Booked (Ireland - 71' )

25 Crouch (Jones - 81' )

24 Assaidi

GOAL - Birmingham 3-4 Stoke - Kenwyne Jones (93 mins)

Extra-time has only just started, and Stoke are back in front. Kenwyne Jones, on as a sub for Peter Crouch, goes round Colin Doyle and slots home. Looks like Birmingham have got to mount ANOTHER comeback.

2152:

Birmingham 3-4 Stoke

A subdued atmosphere at St Andrew's, where it seems Birmingham have run out of steam as we near the end of the first period of extra time. Can Blues boss Lee Clark say anything to rally his troops at the break?

2153:

GREAT SAVE! - Birmingham 3-4 Stoke

Almost a fifth for Stoke as Oussama Assaidi runs clear but Colin Doyle sticks out an arm to turn his shot round the post. Mind you, the way this game has been going, Stoke will need eight goals before they are safe.

2200:

HALF-TIME OF EXTRA-TIME- Birmingham 3-4 Stoke

Stoke lead thanks to that Kenwyne Jones goal, which came three minutes into extra-time. The Blues have not created anything of note since.

2217:

FULL-TIME EXTRA-TIME - Birmingham 4-4 Stoke

So, it will be penalties at St Andrew's. Birmingham have played with 10 men since half-time of normal time. They were 3-1 down with five minutes of the 90 to go, and then went 4-3 down early in extra-time. Now they have a chance of winning this shoot-out.

1-0 Stoke

Birmingham miss their first penalty

2-0 Stoke

2-1 Stoke

3-1 Stoke

3-2 Stoke

Stoke win 4-2 on pens

127 minutes on the pitch. Saints should be the fresher team on Saturday.

(But I hope we aren't similarly having to play extra time the following Wednesday against Sunderland before the Hull game.)

Looks like Stoke ran out of steam in the middle of the second half. They put a fairly strong side out too. Can only bode well for us. Maybe asking a lot for another clean sheet, but I've backed us to win to nil at 5/2 anyway.

I can see Stoke lining up as:

Begovic

Pieters

Huth (Played 120 mins)

Shawcross (Played 120 mins)

Cameron

Arnautovic (Played 71 mins)

N'zonzi (Played 120 mins)

Whelan

Ireland (Played 49 mins)

Crouch (Played 81 mins)

Walters

Subs: Sorensen (120), Wilson (120), Wilkinson, Palacios (120), Adam, Assaidi (120), Jones (39)

Bit of a mixed bag in terms of freshness.

Hopefully after playing 120 minutes against Birmingham in the cup , they won't last the full game, so will probably tire at about 60 minutes. And given that we have the fittest squad in the league due to Pochettino's double training sessions, I think we will win this one comfortably. We also have better players than them. There isn't one Stoke player I would want in the Saints team. However that new boy Arnautovic does look good.

Their midfield is absolutely dreadful isn't it! Whelan and NZonzi!

Actually looking through their other games they seem to have Whelan on the bench quite a bit, more like to be Adam or Palacios.

Just noticed they haven't scored in their last three home games (0-0 vs Man C and West Brom, 0-1 vs Norwich).

6 of the players who started last night also started at Man Utd last week. Hughes wasnt happy with the performance last night so may freshen it up on saturday.

Our fitness is key and as long as we play our game like we did at Liverpool and Man Utd then we have great chance of getting 3 points.

This game is made for JRod to use his pace and run at the Stoke donkeys. Lambert will have his work cut out against Huth and Shawcross. Osvaldo off the bench is a nice option if things are not going to plan.

Do they now play 'possession' football and look to keep the ball on the floor - passing it round the back? We haven't done well under Poch against long ball teams as it just bypasses the press, so hopefully they'll knock it round the back and we'll pounce.

Anyone know of any good pubs ?

Quite obviously this is a game where Hughes should go back to them hitting the channels and Crouch with precision long passes. This is the one of the best ways of defeating the press. The other way is to suck the press in and then play "cute" round-the-corner type balls but arguably only Chelsea and Arsenal posses such midfield players capable of this.

I am expecting a very tough game and a decent tactical battle. Hughes surely won't make the same mistakes Jol did in thinking he has the players to beat the press in midfield?? I know Stoke are trying to change their style of play and they should be applauded for this but this game calls for a more direct approach from them.

oddly enough I actually think we may mix it up a fair bit more to counter this. We may find that we sit a little deeper than usual and hit the diagonal to Lambert more than usual too.

Last minute equaliser you mean. I'm going to this. Any recommendations for pubs? We're going by train which will probably mean hanging around the town centre then getting the bus or walking to the ground. It seems a fair walk but not any longer than the walk from Colchester station to the ground.

We are going up by train too, there is a shuttle bus operation from the station IIRC. Pubs seem to be the Glebe or the Terrace Inn station wise, can View From The Top suggest anything?

We had a shocking experience with thetrainline.com, two of us (in different locations were on the site looking to purchase six tickets), studying all the times and various routes etc to get the most suitable time and best price. Ten-fifteen minutes later the price leaped by over £100 when we went to proceed with our favoured option at the checkout stage, when we tried to clear the order and start again, the specific trains we had selected had gone way up in price. C*nts, tracking our cookies or whatever. We bought through national rail in the end via a private browser much closer to the original price, well done thetrainline, thanks.

Anyone experienced anything like this before? I cant see the demand on a specific off-peak train from Euston to Stoke soaring in a way that would bump the price so much higher.

Really looking forward to another trip to the Brit, every chance of winning!

Some of the Manchester trains stop at Stoke - when we went up to Old T a couple of weeks ago, piles (ok quite a lot) of Port Vale fans got on at Stoke, going to their game at Sheff Utd. The train suddenly went from full to very full, until they got off at Stockport. Although I fail to see why this would push up the cost

Despite their adverts, all rail ticket websites charge the same prices, except for the small booking fees etc. It is extremely unusual for prices to be different between any websites - they are all identical 99.9% of the time. What may have happened is that the discount for buying early may have changed on the system while you were actually loggged on (this is just unlucky on timing), and the national rail site was just slow in processing the change. It is rare and should not happen - it should be simultaneous. Bore fest over, sorry

MP says Davis are Osvaldo are "better" and will be assessed in the next two days.

That's good. Even if they don't come in to the starting line-up, our bench will look significantly stronger.

Saying that, I don't think MP will choose a team just because it played well in the last game. He'll pick the team he thinks will win this game.

True, but it does give him a real headache - still very tough to drop anyone out of Lambert, JWP or Rodriguez after their performances against Fulham, hard one to call that.

Definitely, I wouldn't want to make that call. Chances are when he sits down and draws up the team he thinks is most likely to win this game, it's the same as the one that beat Fulham anyway.

It is. Who'd be a manager.

Nice problem to have though

Can see him going with the same starting 11 from the Fulham game

You should try First Great Western. I've found cheaper tickets through their website several times than any on the trainline site.

good side that, but if he's fit think i might have Davis in for JWP to combat Stoke physical presence.

It's a tough one, I think JWP has got a great chance of starting again. Much more of an attacking threat than Davis as well with his delivery. I fancy us to dominate the midfield and have plenty of the ball, so there would be less of a need for someone like Davis doing more dirty work.

Morgan & Wanyama vs N'zonzi & Whelen/Palacios. No contest.

They're powerful at CB with Huth and Shawcross, but they haven't been great this season by all accounts. I know nothing about Pieters (LB), but the form Lallana is in, he's in for a tough game. Geoff Camerson is their RB, and sh*t. J-Rod will be at least a handful for him.

They've got some useful players going forward - that Arnautovic looks handy, Crouch is always a danger, Assaidi too. But then they've also got Charlie Adam, Kenwyne Jones, and Jon 'Barndoor' Walters, who I'm fairly sure has never scored anything but an own goal.

They had 120 mins midweek (against a sh*t Birmingham city), and we're absolutely flying. We should be far too much for them.

Stoke 3-0 Southampton

Where's the best place to park? I've seen there are places along Stanley Matthews Way, but is it a nightmare to get out of at the end?

I parked in an industrial unit the other side of the Harvester from the ground last season, was absolute hell to get out so will probably head for somewhere the other side of Stanley Matthews Way this time, then it's just a walk over the footbridge and hopefully an easier get away afterwards!

Are you sure? :?

Tongue in cheek. For me. Everything is pointing at a Saints win, so we probably won't.

I'm still having trouble getting away from that old Saints mentality that whenever things are looking up, we'll inexplicably balls it up.

It's a little scary when you see our (possible) bench has four regular internationals, including two international captains. Doesn't seem two minutes ago we were talking about Hammond, Harding and Wotton.
