clyne and Lallana for England

let's face it .we're already on the plane to Brazil........so whoever Roy chooses now should be those who are on the up and may be needed to make up the numbers.

Half the England side has already picked itself (on form)..there must be questions marks against players like Lampard, who will undoubtedly travel, and the inconsistant form of the Cleverley's and Smalling's who may play for Man.utd ....but only when they can get off the bench.

The Saints players mentioned are regulars in our Prem.side and look likely to improve even more. Their "superman, double-training " may provide the extra stamina and be an advantage in the Brazilian climate.

Roy has nothing to lose (in friendlies)....because if he tries them and it doesn't work, at least he's given them a chance......if he doesn't he'll get slated for not giving them a game.

***** all this conjecture is dependant on form and fitness - of course.

If Lambert scores 10+ he will make the squad. Lallana and Clyne might get a chance but they will have to make the same impact Townsend did when given the chance, to make the World Cup squad. J Rod is a quality player who I rate highly, but still too inconsistent from game to game. There are already a lot of central midfielders ahead of JWP so he has next to no chance. Shaw has to contend with 2 class left backs, shame we don't have such an abudamce of quality in other positions!

Collymore just said on his radio show that if cleverly is getting into the squad then Lallana should be an absolute shoe-in to start in the next round of games

Colleymore also bigged up Clyne & Shaw to be looked at for the full back spots. And one of the two journalists on there Martin Lipton just mentioned Ward-Prowse. That forced someone else to mention J-Rod. getting plenty of support for our players.

Watching recent England matches I would say the pedestrian pace of the national team moving the ball does not suit our lads, who are fitter and used to a faster pace both physically and mentally.

We move the ball around fair slow at times

I had a similar thought after the last England game. They look so SLOW now I'm used to Saints style. I kept shouting at the screen "c'mon, chase him down!" But nothing happened. (Maybe they didn't hear me).

I think Pochettino has destroyed my enjoyment of watching any other team except for Saints now. Particularly after Saturdays performance. It's a hard life.

just watching smalling again on telly

he really is bang average at RB

if clyne does not get a look in during the round of friendlies and smalling is picked. it will certainly be on who they play for and nothing on form/ability

ph, cleverly is not even playing (again)

Not sure how Cleverley gets a game in this league, let alone for our country.

Sick of hearing and reading about Shaw getting an England call ahead of James Ward-Prowse! Ward-Prowse is streaks ahead of Shaw in the England call up pecking order. JWP has shown more than a strong ability playing for the Under 21's where Shaw has been too big a risk health, injury wise.

Lallana and Clyne have to be given a chance but fear Rodriguez has left it a little too late to get an England call up this time around.

I'd suggest a touch of saints tinted specs is at play but for sure Hodgson could do worse then having Clyne in his squad to see how he stacks up (though personally I think Richards, if he could get a run of injury free games, is the best of the bunch at for England).

Cleverly I think some of the criticism goes too far, sure there is a bit of big club thinking in him making the England squad (on current form and with his lack of game time he shouldn't be in!) but I think he is a talented player who's development is stifled by sitting on a utd bench. In an everton, wba, swansea or even saints side I firmly think he has enough ability to blossom into international material (though I don't believe he is there yet and, as it stands, I would certainly take our AL to the world cup over him!).

Clyne is much better than Micah Richards at RB.

You have to look at form over the last 18 months, the likes of Richards and Young have done nothing.

Its easy to hide in the huge squads of the big teams, less easy to play well every week for 35 or so league games.

Richards has barely played! In terms of form no contest but ability and experience? For me, at this time, Richards.

Young though I will give you, the lad is dross!

Agreed.

Centre backs as full backs just doesn't work anymore. The game has moved on.

It is maddening.

Lambert should be back in the friendly sqauds and play.

Strong case for Lallana too. Although I wonder if Townsend keeps him out (not that they're the same players, just that Woy has a feather in his cap for "discovering" a new international so might stick rather than twist).

Clyne? Hmmm....looks like an England right-back in a couple of years, but would think Walker and Johnson are the obvious choices, so what is there to see? Same goes for Shaw (behind Cole and Baines). I guess there is a bit of a case to look at your 3rd choice wing-backs, but not a strong one.

J-Rod? You've lost me here. I like the guy, but surely he is nowhere near contention for Brazil....something like 9th or 10th choice forward?

Maybe I have a Dell-sized mentality, but I'd select Lambert and Lallana (and play them) and maybe, just maybe, Clyne.

I'll say it again, Clyne will have done his England case absolutely no good whatsoever by being utterly terrible for the U21s in the summer. He was the worst player in the starting eleven in the opening match by some distance, had an utter nightmare and got dropped after that.

Lallana's got to be in with a shout if he keeps up his form prior to Saturday for a bit longer, but Rodriguez really hasn't done much to make him worth a call up yet - he's not going to offer anything England don't already have a ton of if people are claiming he'd get in for pace and running with the ball. Even Townsend has done more, and I don't think he's been all that great this season either - one lucky hit for England after not scoring with 10 of the same this season for Spurs and rarely actually gets past his man.

At international level you need players that are happy to dribble and keep the ball just that little bit longer than lessor players can. Townsend, Wellbeck, Sturridge, Wiltshire and even Rooney to lessor degree can do that, which gives me more confidence than I have had for a long time in the England side. Lallana is another that can do just that and I'd have him in the England squad without question.

I think Walker getting skinned a couple of times by Konoplienka has tarred everyone's opinion of him. Walker is strong and pacey and just as good going forward as Clyne. Whether Clyne or the Skate toilet thief would have faired better against Ukraine I don't know. Johnson has been made to look a mug on many occasions at the very top level. Whether Clyne is better than those two I'm not 100% convinced. I'd select him ahead of Smalling or Jones, but all England managers like to take about 15 centre backs and never play them so no doubt Roy will do the same.

I thought Delph was the best player on the pitch at Villa Park last season against us. He is very assured and looked a class act. I think he is well worth a look at international level.
