skintsaint Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 Got to love the Aussie fans, the time difference makes watching games kind of tricky... The amount of Aussie photos on Facebook is amazing... yeah 10pm kick offs on a Sat night is a nightmare.....
ericb Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 Presumably you don't allow yourself to get engaged with any American sports then? Honestly no, but then I find the majority of American sports dull to be honest. The closest would be watching foreign football, where's there's some clubs I like watching and want to do well, but would never consider myself a fan of. As for people seeing it as an affront or bad thing it's not, I just don't understand it. It seems a hollow thing to me and takes out the most important layer of what makes supporting a club mean something. Pride in where you're from. Turkish Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 I agree to an extent. Some people go when they can, when work allows, when finances allow etc etc. But for those that do choose based on who we are playing, it tends to be the bigger clubs; mau u chelsea etc..... and that is the bit that I dont get. If i could only make a few matches it would be the palaces, hulls and cardiffs that i would choose, to give me the best chance of seeing Saints win. My view exactly. If I could only go to one game a season it'd be one which I thought saints would win, or at least had a good chance of. I go to see saints to see us score, win and play well, I've no interest in watching the other team or players or being gallant losers against a big club. One of the things that really got under my skin was the excitement of so called saints fans before we played Man United in the FA cup when we were in l1. The amount of people who claimed to be saints fans but never go to games who were badgering me to get tickets for them and updating their Facebook status with how exited they were to have got Man United tickets drove me mad. Naturally I want him to grow up a Saints fan but it isn't our local team now, that is now Leeds. His grandad is a Leeds fan as are most of the kids in our road so he's surrounded by them. I won't have a problem with him being a Leeds fan as I'm with you on pride in the area and also a big part of football for me is going with your mates and the people you meet through it, there is nothing like meeting up with the lads for a few pints before a game but he won't really get that if he's a Saints fan, but I'd still be a bit disappointed if he doesnt support Saints when he's old enough. LGTL Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 I wonder if it means more to those who are from the city? Is that buzz from a win and ruin of a weekend from a defeat more intense? Guess nobody will ever know. For me, they are more then a football club, they're a representation of my city across the rest of the country. Love it. Which is one of the reasons why I hate seeing so many divs in fancy dress and facepaints.
Saint-Armstrong Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 Born in Southend, raised in Southend, live in Southend. But my Dad lived in Southampton and took me to my first Saints game when I was old enough. Before then I quite liked Chelsea because of John Terry - evidently a bad judge of character. Thought my nipper would end up following Wolves or Stoke but no, he wanted to go with dad. That's how it'll work for you as well. My nipper is proud to be a Saint and proud to be the only one at his school. He loves the fact that he goes to games when all the plastics merely watch Sky and I could no longer go to a game without him, I'd feel lost without sharing the highs and lows with him. I hope so, I'd still rather Leeds than be a Man United, Chelsea etc or even worse a Liverpool as that is what his uncle up here is determined to make him. Give his uncle a slap! It's a father's right to share his football team with his son.
mitch01 Posted 23 October, 2013 Share Posted 23 October, 2013 I grew up in Farnham and didn't get to my first Saints game until 2001 when I was 11, but have been to around 175 since despite lengthy stints in Central America, British Columbia and Nottingham. I have never lived in, or even gone for a night out in, Southampton. My mother grew up there, my uncle still lives there. I haven't bought a shirt since 'Lambert 7' in 2009 (modern classic). Am I allowed to be a Saints fan?
