Fulham (H) Build Up

Because their youth talents aren't as good as ours...? We may bring a similar number through, or have a similar number who've played in the first team (I honestly don't know who they've brought through), but how many of theirs have made multi-million pound moves to Arsenal or Real Madrid lately, how many are in the England U-21, U-19 set-ups, and how many have been highlighted by the pundits/media and courted by other clubs?

The Fulham Academy is very impressive. There's a lot of great young players and they're increasingly attracting players from a wider catchment area, into Essex etc. I know a few who have left Southend/Colchester/Orient et al to sign for Fulham.

However, they've not had their first breakthrough star yet. They've won the leagues and done well in the cups, however.

I'm sure the graduates will soon come.

Fulham used to have a particularly bad reputation among the smaller academies in the area for failing to bring their own players through, preferring to nick the top players from the likes of Wimbledon, Aldershot, Brentford, etc instead of being a bit more thorough when scouting players at a younger age.

As yet, I think the only player they've brought through in recent years is Matthew Briggs. He played a lot in Europe a few years ago, but hasn't kicked on at all. Went on loan to Watford last season where he was largely dreadful, according to a Watford-supporting friend of mine. The only other young players have been bought in, e.g. Kacaniklic, Kasami, etc.

Meanwhile, Jol persists in preferring to sign players who are 30+, the likes of Sidwell, Parker, Karagounis, Bent, etc, so even if the youngsters were any good, they're not getting any sort of an opportunity.

Their academy teams do very well every year. I wonder where the breakdown in the system is?

Perhaps they miss the key point to an academy, creating players for the first team. Instead they might be concentrating on a good team unit that does well in youth leagues/cups without having any outstanding individuals that can progress into the first team like Saints do.

Good teams but not outstanding individual players capable of stepping up to PL level?

First team staff not brave enough to take out an experienced pro and replace with a rookie?

Combination of both most likely, and luckily neither is a problem for us.

Doesn't seem to be, the way our manager is talking. Onwards and upwards!

I think they're seeing how many touches they can get without being intercepted? It took me ages too. Guly's nutmeg was an outrageous bit of skill though. He's nearly ready.

I dreamt last night that he scored a goal, low into the left hand corner.. I suppose it might have been Wanyama, it wasn't very high definition.
