Osvaldo

As I just posted on the post-match thread...

If the rest of our attacking players could start playing decent balls into the box or hitting quality through balls, then Osvaldo would have got a few more goals so far and we wouldn't even be debating his effectiveness. He's clearly a quality player who has strength as well as ability, and I have no doubt whatsoever that he will start banging them in sooner rather than later.

He didn't have a great game today, but he was the 3rd top scorer in Serie A last season and is an Italian international striker. Some of the comments in the match thread today were ridiculous. He is clearly a quality player based on his previous record and what we've seen of him in the few games he has had for Saints.

Thought our formation would suit him better today but he disappointed, and was somewhat carried through the game by our excellent midfield. Should have released Davis earlier when he was in good position, and had a couple of speculative efforts that weren't ever likely to bother De Gea. His first touch, which is usually superb, was poor throughout.

Hopefully just rusty from international duty and he will bang in a couple vs. Fulham. Think that we do need a proper no. 10 in to play with him though and feed him those balls behind the defence - whether that should be Ramirez/Davis or a new signing entirely, is another question.

He keeps trying, and maybe you could say he's guilty of trying too hard a times - sometimes it looks a little forced. Once he gets a few goals under his locker the pressure will leave, and we'll see the real player. He's undoubtedly pure class, as we saw for Italy in the week. Just not quite getting to grips with the English game as yet. But he's shown enough to suggest it will happen in time. He doesn't try and hide away - that's for sure.

Trying is just not good enough. I know I will get ripped for this, but I have not yet seen anything from him that would justify the money we paid for him. Lots of guys "try", but that doesn't get us anywhere. Scoring is the measure of a forward. Nothing else matters. I wonder if we can still get our money back?

You don't think he has good technical skills and passing game? he's proved he is a goal scorer at this other clubs, tbf hes only had six or so games

Do you think that maybe, just maybe, his handful of appearances for us don't accurately reflect his actual ability as a football player?

Couple of point:

1 - IMO, fans really need to disconnect the price tag from what is produced on the pitch. On the pitch, on the day, the price tag doesn't matter, and to use it as some kind of barometer for how good someone should be is a false, one-way argument only. If you want to debate the price tag, fine, but level the questions at the people who paid it... Osvaldo had no say in that.

2 - His career record clearly shows that he has ability, so no one should be (and I don't think anyone is) writing him off. On the contrary, I feel that to be in the position we are in, with the points and results gained so far, despite him clearly not quite being at his best yet, is a positive thing. Think how much better we can be once he is firing.

3 - On Osvaldo himself, it will take him some time to adapt to the Premier League. There are numerous times at present where he is a little too casual on the ball and defender nip it away from him quicker than he is clearly expecting. This will improve. Just look at most of the players still with us, who came up from the Championship... there was a clear, steep learning curve for them all to be quicker in the head, quicker on the ball, sharper with their passing etc, etc. Pochettino knows him better than any of us and he has earned our respect and the right to call it as he sees it. I have no doubt he'll drop him if he feels the need, but as much as we love Rickie, it's not like either of them are exactly on fire. He does need to improve IMO, but it is far too early to make any finite judgements.

All in all, I think we should be positive about the fact that we are not quite firing on all cylinders, but find ourselves in the upper echelons of the league. Be positive, and who knows what we could achieve. If Osvaldo can become a bigger part of that then we'd all be happy.

Top post, clear evidence you understand the game far better than some..

I desperately want him to settle in and score loads of goals but I feel he's a bit of an outsider at the moment. Lovren an VW are very much part of the team but Ossie doesn't seem to interact much, goes straight down the tunnel after the match and looks a bit of a loner. Obviously different when he scores so to me thrives on confidence and hopefully this will come soon, hat trick against Fulham will help.

Why the negativity? We just got a great point away at Old Trafford and played really well, but still we get these downbeat threads. Osvaldo tried hard, it didn't happen for him today, but he didn't do that intentionally. Let's enjoy this result please.

Not sure if trying and good enough are related. Watching him closely his chasing and closing were were not great so from the 'trying' side he was average at best but you don't mind if you a special talent on your hands.... However I haven't seen a shred of evidence yet that we can carry him much longer.... His touch is down right poor at times he is not dissimilar to Ramirez in many ways in that he often gets caught in possession and passes often go astray....

We have a great team here but I'm nor convinced Osvaldo is great at all.

One of worst performances I've ever seen in saints shirt. We were playing with ten men. J rod pants too.

Strange, on my stream he was with the team on the pitch long after the final whistle, or is he using Jack Sparrow as a stunt-in?

You are known to be a bit over the top Roger, your passionate support sometimes clouds the truth IMO.

Did you watch the game he was terrible? I think he may come good but hasn't been great so far and today he was just awful. Wasn't enough work rate. But mopo will sort it.

I haven't seen the game, but the bits I have seen him play for us showed me that he has a quick brain and will score from nothing. Try and keep your faith in him, he will turn out to be a good signing

Drogba took a whole season to settle at Chelsea, and he turned out to be really crap didn't he.

Not saying I've lost faith but saw 10 men working backsides off and one not. People will say le tiss but he did work hard in right areas and his end product was second to none.

I promise you there were quite a few times when MLT went missing. I had many debates with Saints fans in those days who called his lazy, not interested and should be dropped !

I watched every game le tiss played. Yes he did go missing after 1998, and in games before but he saved us year after year and was on another planet.

MLT was superb but he was sited as being lazy and a luxury by many Saints fans then. Perhaps the same mistakes may be made by current day Saints fans re Ossie, not that he is Matts class as of yet.

If he shows matts end product I wouldn't complain!
