norwaysaint Posted 16 October, 2013 Share Posted 16 October, 2013 I seem to hear this a lot, obviously never from saints fans, but for some reason a lot of outsiders put RL into that category. I've never seen anything to justify it at all. He's an intelligent forward who pulls the strings for most of our attacking play. He's super fit and quite often shows skillful, neat touches, but it's become a default comment by lots of other fans, even those who like him, that he's a bit of a lump. To me that means a slower, less skillful forward who is able to barge his way through and get on the end of crosses etc and mostly uses brute force to get the ball into the net, contributing little to build up play. That's not Lambert at all. Has he just got the wrong sort of face? Seriously?
david in sweden Posted 16 October, 2013 Share Posted 16 October, 2013 There was a very nice (if short) tribute to RL from Alan Pardew on Sky Sports last week. Worth searching for.... just to hear the real story.

angelman Posted 16 October, 2013 Share Posted 16 October, 2013 Big = because he is over 6ft1 and people consider that big Lump = because anyone who isn't overly quick and is big (tall & wide) is called a lump Having said that, there is more to it than that. If you take Sheringham, who was over 6ft, I can't recall him ever being called a lump. Maybe RL did carry more weight, but to me, it's more about people having to denigrate Saints and their players, not maliciously but more flippantly. We all know how the press and such like view the club, so obviously our players can't be any good, so the superlatives are reserved for the "Big 6" clubs and their players. stardustonmyfeet Posted 17 October, 2013 Share Posted 17 October, 2013 I think people used to describe Crouch in the same sort of way, even after he had left.
brmbrm Posted 17 October, 2013 Share Posted 17 October, 2013 For a while he was a bit lump like I guess. And stereotypes are nice easy solutions too
Lord Duckhunter Posted 17 October, 2013 Share Posted 17 October, 2013 I've never heard or read any journo, manager, pundit or fellow pro call him a big lump. I've never personally heard another sides supporters call him that, but accept that they probably have done. Must guys seem pretty impressed with him. I did get a mate from cov text " should have played Lambert" after the Ukraine game (which I thought was quite a good bit of banter), but most people I speak to rate him. ericofarabia Posted 17 October, 2013 Share Posted 17 October, 2013 I'd rather him be referred to as a Big Lump, because of his willingness to withstand the rough play dished out by centre halves, than a Pony Tailed Poncey streak of p!ss who goes down quicker than Avram in a Horton Heath Industrial Estate with every challenge, and then cries like a big girls blouse to the ref. Andy Carroll is an embarrassment to Beer Drinking, Tab smokin arse scratchin Geordie Mankind.

This Why do some people start threads based on making stuff up? I think he has endeared himself to away fans and the media tremendously.

Sheaf Saint Posted 17 October, 2013 Share Posted 17 October, 2013 It probably stems from the fact that he played in the lower leagues all those years where skillful, talented footballers are few and far between.
