Surprised to find that Nathaniel has not been called into the full squad for the game tonight. He's not carrying an injury is he?

Apologies if this has been done elsewhere.

Why would they want another right back though ? Clyne must be well down the pecking order.

He has the unfortunate issue of playing for Southampton

not that it's particularly relevant but no player on France's starting line up tonight will be without CL experience, not a single one.

for England it must just be what Baines ? (I don't expect Lambert to start) In the eyes of most major nation international managers it's best to have an out of position option with CL experience rather than an actual player in that position without.I don't know why they all put such importance on hammering Moldavian minnows or Norwegian Nonces but they do. It's why players leave clubs where they are perfectly content to go to others where they'll end up on the bench.

You can only call up replacements for injuries can't you, not suspensions?

but they could have called him up for Cole or Cleverly, would have made more sense than Sterling anyway. They didn't because they didn't want to do that.

Jagielka? Townsend? Not sure how much Sturridge played in the CL for Chelsea, a bit I guess.

They weren't named in the original squad though so that doesn't make sense. People are talking about him being called up now that Walker is suspended, but once you've named your squad you can only replace members who get injured (I think).

Walker for Spurs as well, can't have played CL for a couple of seasons at least.

That makes sense but then you'd have to question the original squad only having one right back. The right side will be nowhere near as effective tonight as it was on Friday.

but as Cleverly and Cole have pulled out injured does that not mean that they could call up a right back? Don't think it's like Rugby where replacements have to be position for position. Hodgson obviously considers that Smalling and Phil Jones are better right backs than Clyne, then again he's an old idiot so what can you expect..

And they are 25th (I think) in the fifa rankings

well looks like I'm wrong then, Hodgson probably takes Europa League experience as well.
To be fair, I'm sure he'd probably go for an 11 from the Champions League side, problem is there aren't 11 players available to him across the 4 sides.

Gibbs came in for Cole and Sterling for Cleverly.

Seems a shame that England played a formation on Friday where we were effective and have plenty of cover for the respective positions. Jones or Smalling are not suitable replacements for an attacking right back.

because they went on a South American jolly with a substandard squad and got their ass kicked, because they failed to score against Georgia because the mandatory Real Madrid player (cos DD's mate Zizou is a big cheese down there nowadays) couldn't score for something like 14 consecutive games. Why they're even considering lancing an appeal against the FIFA ranking system because they're in a group of 5 and didn't get to muller a minnow 15-0 twice to get their average up. Deschamps is an idiot, the FFF are idiots because despite their squad actually going on strike in South Africa in 2010 they've never cleared out all of the rotten elements, in fact they've all crept back in again .

I'm pretty sure they weren't originally named in the squad though, that's the point. They were already injured when the squad was named.

But they've still called up Sterling as a replacement, even after Walker got a yellow that's the point. They've replaced Cleverly with Sterling and not with a right back so they are obviously satisfied that what they have is better than what they could get isn't it ?

I don't think there's any rule about not changing the group between 2 international matches, it's just a convenient way of having all of the players together for a certain time.

I was wondering why Hodgson didn't call up a RB to replace Walker as well - fair enough he has Jones and Smalling who can play there, but neither of them are natural right backs. Glen Johnson is carrying an injury, and Jenkinson is a fringe player at Arsenal, so surely it would have made sense to call up Clyne or even Micah Richards rather than Sterling. I will say that England looked like they were missing something out wide without Walcott on Friday night, so perhaps that was the priority to address rather than having a natural RB in the squad.

that's what playing for Utd does for you, why I don't doubt that Utd's U15 keeper is a better option at RB than a real one from a "modest" club.
