saint lard Posted 9 December, 2008 Posted 9 December, 2008 I am totally underwhelmed by this appointment.
Fowllyd Posted 9 December, 2008 Posted 9 December, 2008 wasn't jan on about 70k a year at his last club and is probably on about 100k now, the threeof them are on probably 300k between them and pearson was getting 400k, so the club are getting three coaches (i reckon) cheaper than before. also would pearson have been able to work with the kids and no stars as he'd have had to? doubt it personally. According to the club, Poortvliet paid off his year's salary out of his own pocket when he left Helmond, such was his desire to take the job here. The Echo put the sum he paid at £60,000 - admittedly, I don't know how accurate that is, but the Echo certainly seem very close to the club these days. I have no idea how much Jan is paid at SFC, but it would seem odd to leave a job in your home country for a bigger one in another country (given the upheaval and expense involved) and get paid - effectively - £20,000 less in your first year. Which, if he's on £100,000 here, is exactly what he has done. As to Pearson's salary, where did you get that figure from? Plucked from the air perhaps?
ericofarabia Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 Was I the only person who got excited when he saw "new coach appointed" on the OS? I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned that misleading headline, after the performance at Palarse it wou;ldn't have been a surprise at all. I think the new guy must have been interviewed in an Amsterdam "Coffee Shop" ..... from The Echo ...... The first time I came here it was like I’d gone back in time to my days playing for Ajax. “The quality of the training ground and with the young players together is phenomenal. “I can’t say that I’ve seen any bad player on the training ground which is very important for me because you want to work with talent and when you’ve got players like this together it’s a joy to work with.” Anyway mate, welcome on board the roller coaster to hell.
Wes Tender Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 OK, where did that salary figure for Pearson come from? I don't follow things as closely as I used to, but is that a complete guess or do you have something to substantiate that figure with? As for the 'three for the price of one' philosophy, that is Lowe through and through. Why get one decent player/manager when you can have three average ones? That is one of the main policies that got us in this situation with carrying a bloated squad of very average players instead of investing in fewer players of better quality and paying them a decent wage. Seems like someone never learns. Even if Pearson did cost a bit more than the now treble Dutch (which has not been satisfactorily proven), I would still have him back in a flash, as at least he knows what he is doing. In business I often come across fools like Lowe who quibble about the price of something and go for the cheapest option rather than the value one. Mind you, that philosophy never extends to their own personal possessions, their house, their car, their clothes, their holidays etc. It is totally idiotic and you'd think that by a certain stage of their lives that the'd have learned the lessons.

eelpie Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 Would need proof of the wages before commenting. I'm not convinced that first group come to much over 5k a week. And short contracts for some, few loans etc. Robertson meant dyer going, whose wages are likely to be larger. The latter groups wages probably reach 25k a week. Yes, but replacing talent with unusable mediocrities is bl**dy pointless
Thedelldays Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 i will say again..who is to say pearson would have done any better with what we have right now? he did just enough with far more talent... we just dont know
sun of spain Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 Another Dutchman,to add to our "total football" experiment. The whole thing is like Dutch cheese, looks nice on the outside but no taste and full of holes inside ! Gouda help us !!
eelpie Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 (edited) i will say again..who is to say pearson would have done any better with what we have right now? he did just enough with far more talent... we just dont know As I said before, his new club Leicester are running away with the League 1 Championship, while we are heading for relegation. He took over Saints when we were totally demoralised and revived our fortunes, well just enough to escape relegation. Gates were soaring and we ended the season on a high. He took over Leicester when they were totally demoralised and in dissaray and has transformed them in a few months. So the evidence of his capabilities is pretty strong. Compare with us today. The exact opposite has happened. Lowe and Poortvliet took over a club relatively revived and optimistic. Now we are floundering, sinking and gates are down. Case rested. Regarding the your point about talent. Pearson would not have disregarded the talent we still have on our books. And we was introducing young players into the team. He would have been able to manage with a smaller squad, because he is pragmatic, inspiring and knows his trade better than our present amateurs. Edited 10 December, 2008 by eelpie

Charlie Wayman Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 I think a point that it is being missed is that this bloke Dean has valuable English league experience at Liverpool & Man U... Oh! Sh** i misread the OS, he has valuable experience etc. at Huddersfield, Barnsley... oh! and Blackpool. Could you make this up? Give me strength, please give me strength. How many more days of The Long March Chairman LayO?

The only person going on about 'great managers' appears to be you. You asked if he'd be doing better than how we are now. It wouldn't take a great manager to do that, just a decent one.

labibs Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 With regards to Pearson and his cost, would he not have had to bring in some additional coaches himself? If he was given a long-term contract, would he not have at least wanted an assistant? Or would he have coached the first team and the reserves himself? I honestly can't remember, was there any overlap between Dodd and Gorman doing coaching at the club and Pearson's appointment, or were they let go as soon as Pearson was appointed?

Goal difference 18. And no, I wouldn't say McCarthy is a great manager. Nor Pearson. I said, Pearson is pragmatic, inspiring and knows his trade better than our present amateurs.

Thedelldays Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 there are 6 points between 1st and 6th...with mk dons having the same GD and the others not far off.. hardly running away with the league really is it...

Well, even DD admits that Pearson's Leicester are managing with a 'bare minimum'

I doubt if there is a single Saints fan, including yourself, that wouldn't be happy with that. And certainly not if we are in League 1 next season.
Thedelldays Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 I doubt if there is a single Saints fan, including yourself, that wouldn't be happy with that. And certainly not if we are in League 1 next season. but we are not in league 1...do you think spurs fans look at wolves in awe? or newcastle fans looking at brum and think we would be happy with that??? or boro fans thinking that reading have it good? erm....no
eelpie Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 but we are not in league 1...do you think spurs fans look at wolves in awe? or newcastle fans looking at brum and think we would be happy with that??? or boro fans thinking that reading have it good? erm....no Give up DD, you're on a loser with this one. I know you would have preferred Pearson to Poortvliet.
Thedelldays Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 Give up DD, you're on a loser with this one. I know you would have preferred Pearson to Poortvliet. im a loser..? i think pearson is average....i think Jan is average..i would have billy davies over any of these any day of the week...
VectisSaint Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 also would pearson have been able to work with the kids and no stars as he'd have had to? doubt it personally. I deleted your guesses of incomes because it is just that. The bit I wanted to highlight was the bit about pearson working with the kids. Pearson is very experienced working with the kids, actually much more so than JP. Please check out NP's credentials working with the England youth set ups, he has worked with England at every age group, up to and including u21. He is highly regarded in this area, and that is what really ****es people off who know his background. He was the absolutely ideal man for the job, working on small budgets, understanding the English game, great working with kids, winning mentality, and a young(ish) English manager. But RL had to have his experiment, and couldn't work with someone he had not appointed, so we got a 3rd rate Dutch lower league coach with no experience of the English game, and no real experience of how to work with kids in a competitive environment.
NickG Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 You forgot agents fees, loan fees have to be factored in as well for all of those...no-one is suggesting we kept all 3 just Stern would of done. I have polished my crystal ball and Gorre is Jan's replacement when Wotte takes over next week after the Burnley defeats mutual consent departure ;-) my guess -and its only that - is that we received loan fees for Rasiak, John and Saga but didn't pay for at least Pekhart and Cork. I know we didn't used to charge loan fees when we sent players out to develop, and actually paid some of their wages, so maybe Chelsea and Spurs are doing the same?
Big Ron fan Posted 10 December, 2008 Posted 10 December, 2008 I've just seen his picture on the OS. Is he the love child of John Barnes and Jermaine Wright?
