Saints playing for England (and other internationals)

I actually shouted "WHAT THE F*CK" at the TV when they named Gerrard MOTM after the Moldova game when Lambert scored one and set two up, and Sturridge scored 2.

Ha, me too!

At least justice has been served this time.

"That **** can go suck a lemon, not that it would effect how he looks at all. "

Lol.

Boo, not even a sub appearance for Rickie!

Despite out dominance (70% at times). Montenegro always looked dangerous on the break, and I thought both Lampard and Gerrard were a bit below par.

We needed the changes in midfield and I don't think I'd argue the subbing, although I'd like to have seen Rickie on ..even for the last 10 mins.

I expected loads of wasted chances from our "strike force" and not to be disappointed one or two did land in row Q, but I was was still more concerned about our defence..(what is Walker doing there FFS ?)

Have to say I did think Rooney played well, though (though it pains me to have to say it ).

I see Sterling has been promoted to the full squad to cover the absence of Cleverly, wouldn't have thought that was a like for like replacement myself though. Do we think that's a slap in the face for Lallana or that it's justifiable to replace Cleverly with a Liverpool bencher ?

it really is. lallana has been excellent this season.

sterling has not and has not been for a while now

it really is a case of play for the traditional top clubs and you are in when it comes to decisions like this

infact, what has sterling done of any note what so ever to get in now?

Sterling has been garbage -listening to Liverpool fans on the way back from our game and the consensus is that he's been struggling.

Other than a big club bias, the only explanation is that Hodgson wanted a direct, pacey winger -not only because that's his 'old school'' philosophy and consistent with the sides he put out at a club level but also because they could step in for Townsend if the gamble to start him didn't paid off.

Nobody will confuse Lallana for a pacey winger; but it really shows how shallow the talent pool really is at the position.

Absolute joke decision that. It can't be argued that there isn't a big club bias in terms of international call ups.

But Cleverly isn't a pacey winger either, more of a CM isn't he ? Townsend played well yesterday I believe, no reason to think he won't do the same against Poland.

Surely Nathan Dyer would be the obvious choice on that basis?

No great surprise at all, I even though Clyne might be in with a chance of call up as well since Kyle Walker is now suspended for the Poland game but no, let's play Smalling or Jones from Man U who've hardly played this season and who's first choice position is centre half (although both can do a job at RB) when the RB from the club with the meanest defence this season is available... but of course we're not a big club.

as always, half of the england squad players could play a hell of a lot better for the likes of norwich, stoke etc and never get a look in

The missing element is "European" experience. National team managers are afraid to select players without it. It's not just the UK, any major football nation has few players who don't have European competition experience although what crushing some Moldavian minnows from time to time brings to the table I couldn't say. Michu got his first call up for Spain this week I think, started against Bielorussia yesterday, now with his scoring record last season you'd have thought he'd have got a nod for their summer tour, but no, not until he'd played in a couple of insignificant Europa League games did he become selectionnable.

I always laugh when OxO got called up for england without even playing for arsenal. did he transform as a player over night and gain extra abilities?

Ah no, that's down to the Mirror and the Sun. They do like to have their binkies in the national side, The Sun got Walcott into England's 2006 World Cup squad.

While I don't rate sterling on current form, it's normal for England to use their current squad and u21 s for replacements unless there are major problems with injuries etc. the squad had 3 people who can play right back, and now there's two so why bother calling anyone up? I think Roy has decided on two wingers rather than a 3 man midfield so with Gerard, carrick, lampard and Wiltshire doesn't need another cm, and as sterling was recently in the full squad and is on England duty anyway, he was the obvious choice.

Given walkers recent form, though, I'd like to think Clyne has an outside chance of making the squad next summer. He's not really started yet this season, but Richards isn't playing and walkers poor at the moment so if he gets his head down and has a good season, who knows? I can't see lallana making it, though.

Sterling was terrible the other night against the might of San Marino. What makes anyone think he'll be better against the full Polish defence? Nathan Redmond would have been a much better choice under that criteria.

Poland have nothing to play for, expect it to be a bit of a rout myself, Lambert might even score.
