Planning Permission At Training Ground Granted

There was a training 'dome' but nothing on that scale.

Must be for the next phase of development as I've seen plans for the extra pitches somewhere already, i'm sure MLG is around somewhere to clarify.

Good to have the support from the council powers that be either way.

Having read through some of the docs, this is all for Academy use (only one of the pitches was full-size), but is only for a period of 5 years, as the land is designated for residential use after that... I can only assume there is a longer term plan to move the Academy, and perhaps even the whole training ground, somewhere else in that time?

I think we rent some of the land.

Great to see Minty- thanks. A reservoir to conserve water and a Nature area is well thought out too. I expect the owners of Staplewood Cottage would rather have a green "playing field" than masses of Persimmon Homes at the bottom of their garden. I wonder if the club have bought the land or will lease it from the farmer.?

As I told you months ago the extra fields had been purchased and SSE were asked to remove the remaining overhead line in order for them to build the new dome and pitches.

I was involved in taking down the older overheads during the initial phase of this (of which was one of my worst jobs ever that atleast one other SWF poster can probably remember) though I wont be involved in this phase I did see the plans and talked to some of the guys at the training ground and I must admit its bloody impressive.

I think this is extra to the initial plans for the existing site (which have changed back and forth a few times) so I imagine this is extra cost to the initial 15m ?

"Temporary 5 year use"

Hmm, interesting.

The more I read, the more I realise this is not because the development is temporary in the clubs eyes, but rather what is required to get it past the planning committee at this juncture.

The Local Plan Part 2 (All councils have to have a Local Plan) designates Parks Farm as a potential site for residential development in the future, but doesn't mean they will necessarily be built in 5 years time... indeed to quote from the NFDC Policy response to the application:

Policy MAR2 in the Local Plan Part 2 proposes land at Park’s Farm for up to around 100 new homes. The Plan is currently at Examination. The Inspector examining the plan has issued a Post-Hearing Note in which he sets out his concerns and changes he thinks are necessary in order to make the Plan ‘sound’. The Inspector has not expressed any principle concerns regarding the Council’s proposals in Policy MAR2. Therefore the policy should be afforded significant weight as it is likely to go forward as a housing allocation in the Plan. There is clearly a conflict between the proposed housing allocation and the proposed sports facilities. Although granting a temporary permission does not preclude the potential that housing could come forward on the site at a later date within the plan period, and there is no requirement that the that the site be developed for housing early in the plan period, it is considered that the development of a training ground could compromise the likelihood of housing being developed on the site.

In conclusion the proposal would appear to conflict with the relevant development plan policies. In these circumstances it is for the applicant to demonstrate an overriding need for the proposal and other material considerations which might justify an exception to the relevant policies. It is understood that representatives from Southampton Football Club have put forward such arguments at a meeting with Senior Council Officers. Consideration will need to be given to whether the arguments put forward justify an exception to the relevant policies.

SFC may simply hope that housing needs and plans may have changed within the next 5 years... and frankly, with government policies changing all the time, especially if we get a different colour next time round, who knows.

Mr & Mrs Starns aren't particularly happy with the whole arrangement

Lol, bit of an understatement. And to be honest, I can kind of understand it. But I doubt that occasional football pitch use by Academy kids will have quite the detrimental effect that think it will have...

How many pitches do we need????

For the academy? Where I would assume players start with us from ages of around 6 upwards? Quite a few.

Also, having more than a couple gives you the opportunity to train defenders, midfielders etc. seperately.

In fact if you look at the plans above it lists the uses of the pitches - Under 9s/10s, U13s, and over 18s. One pitch is unlabeled though which I would assume is for the U18s.

And nor are their vegetables...

Although, I daresay they might eventually prefer playng fields which will be used by kids of all ages to another load of houses, cars ....

Exactly. A site with houses on one side and a main road on the other was always ripe for some kind of development.

Worth stating that the Local Plan that NFDC have drawn up (and which I think is currently being consulted on) is designed to guide development across the NFDC area until 2026... which is a long time. The housing that has been earmarked for Parks Farm might be planned for any time during that period depending on population growth in the area, and might even change completely.

I suspect we'll see the club apply for further permissions in 4 years time, to continue to use the land etc, unless we do have a plan to move it all somewhere else? Something I doubt we'll know about any time soon.

"Temporary 5 year use"

Hmm, interesting.

Not really. The Longdown estate own huge amounts of land in the County and are very supportive (from my previous experience) of projects like this. Through an association with a local junior football club, there were talks, where land was provided free of charge, if the club took responsibility of its upkeep, which provides a win win for both parties.

I am not saying this is the same sort of deal, but could be along those lines and therefore it makes sense to the owners for a short lease, which can always be extended in the future.

Just read the objections of Mr and Mrs Starns, wow this is really going to impact on their lives! noise from the dome banging away 24 hours a day and unable to walk her dog around a field that dos not belong to her? not forgetting her phobia of people, perhaps they should move to a more remote location, Marchwood is hardly Dartmoor.

Perhaps Longdown Estates would have put a load of outdoor pigs on the land had he not obtained PP for SFC.

  • 4 months later...
Anyone have any update on the progress of the training ground?

Thought it was meant to be finished by 'early 2014' last I heard…looks half built and abandoned in a few on the training ground interview videos I've seen on YouTube/OS.

It's meant to be almost there and due to be completed by the summer, a few months behind schedule but the pictures I've seen look fantastic.

What in the videos makes you think its been "abandoned"?

Here for example is the spectator stand tonight...

Its very close to completion, as is the main pavilion.
