Seems far fetched but much needed Not sure where you've heard the monorail thing? Not seen it mentioned since the 90's when they were last in fashion (before the Simpsons absolutely destroyed them the world over). Apart from that yes, they are completely redeveloping TQ. To be fair I think the City is starting to get itself together. The music events at the new Guildhall sq this summer have been superb, Portswood is getting a reputation of being somewhere you can find somewhere original to eat/ drink, the work at TQ and the plans for opening up the Waterfront not just there but near the stadium too. Anyone that has spent any time travelling round the country either for work, football or family reasons will know that clearly Southampton is no way in the top 10 worst places to live (neither are London or Chipping Norton obviously, people that slag London, probably the greatest City in the World, off have rarely lived or worked there and base their experiences around Christmas shopping trips or visits to football stadiums in, Fulham/ Chelsea aside, the worst parts of each borough) places like Luton, Slough, Liverpool, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Wigan, Rotherham, Birmingham, Ashford, Milton Keynes and f***ing Pompey are all complete dives and/ or cultural cesspits. Anyway I love my city, born bred and will be buried Southampton. Up the Saints!
CylonKing Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 I have to disagree completely. I live in Nottingham (itself a wonderful city) but always look forward to spending time in Southampton. I guess it is what you are looking for ultimately. We always enjoy Southampton as it has Firehouse, The Hobbit and The Dungeon and though I've not been for a few years, it has one of the best alternative nightlife's in the country. Obviously there is then watching the Saints and the town hall art gallery which last time we were there, was very very good. I love visiting Southampton, it has everything I could ever need for a long weekend. In fact, February is scheduled for our next long overdue trip and I'm already looking forward to it - Arrive Friday late afternoon, head out for a curry, onto Firehouse for a night of Metal, Saturday sees a trip to Goblets for a burger and then after a few pints, head to the stadium for the match. Then Saturday evening sees a trip to the Hobbit and the Dungeon (maybe with Chinese chips between) and then a late night special kebab on the walk back to the hotel. Pretty much a perfect Fri\Sat for me.
jjsaint Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 ^ CyclonKing has a point. I enjoy Southampton and have my favourite haunts in the city. Although I went to the Hobbit once, got stoked on 'Gandalf' cocktails or whatever the f*ck they are, and had a sore liver for months. Horses for courses etc. There are places that are so dire they should be burned to the ground. Luton. I mean f*ck me. Someone mentioned Slough. And most anywhere in Kent. All of Scotland & Northern Ireland. I could go on. Gibraltar's a fair shout though.

Lighthouse Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 Nowhere near being in the worst towns in Britain. I've lived in places like Lincoln and Stafford, probably 2 of the most boring settlements on Earth. If it's not boredom there are far worse sh*t holes out there. I remember our trip to Middlesbrough at the tail end of the Championship season, probably the grimmest looking city I've ever driven through, with Luton being a very strong contender. Just to list a few of the worse places I've visited; Boro, Luton, Pompey, MK, Coventry, Stoke, Stafford, Lincoln, Grantham, Swindon, Yeovil, Sunderland, Rochdale, Wolverhampton, parts of Glasgow (Paisley), Leeds, Hull, Grimsby, S****horpe, Newark and Northampton. aintforever Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 You can't take any article seriously that says this about Morcambe... "Now I'm happy to say that the town has turned a corner. Lots of the lovely old buildings that had been collapsing have been fixed up (the art-deco Midland Hotel is now just gorgeous) and there's also a new, can-do spirit about the place. On a sunny day it's one of the most beautiful places in the UK." Morcambe is a complete sh!t hole. I stopped off there this summer and couldn't get out quick enough. It's the usual northern dump full of the unemployed and derelict buildings. In fact if you were to do a serious list of cr@p UK towns I doubt anywhere South of Oxford would feature in the top 50. All very well citing those museums as reasons why Skatesmouth is better than Southampton in your opinion, but that misses the point somewhat. A lot of the quality of life in a town or city isn't about museums, but about the actual environment, the housing, parks and gardens, the attractiveness of its hinterland. I suspect that once you've visited those attractions you mentioned, the city will begin to look pretty dismal with all those mean little terrace houses and shabby streets full of pikeys. I agree we have many more green spaces in Southampton, but people's impressions of a city is usually made on things to do and parks are usually the reserve of the local population.
