SNSUN Posted 7 October, 2013 Share Posted 7 October, 2013 The manager they need now is someone with experience. To that end, Poyet is a very risky appointment. I thought Harry was the go-to guy for clubs in trouble looking to get out of relegation from the Premier League...

I thought Harry was the go-to guy for clubs in trouble looking to get out of relegation from the Premier League...Think he's committed to QPR. You know what he's like, never leaves a club in worse shap than he found them. It would go against everything he stands for.

SaintBobby Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 Don't like him one bit. But, hmmm...if I was Sunderland? God knows what they were thinking with di Canio in the first place. They would have stayed up with O'Neil anyway. Nuts.

Micky Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 Don't really understand why this man gets all the childish 'name calling' attached to comments. If you saw him play then you will know that he was a very decent player in his day and he has taken that into management. Did a great job at Leeds and has carried that through with Brighton - I believe he got them promoted and then to the play offs as well - so almost did a Nigel. OK so he doesn't have Premiership experience, but neither did MP, everybody has to start somewhere, and let's face it Sunderland are probably currently on par with top to middling Championship sides. No doubt he will take a much different approach to PDC - while I feel a little sorry for Kevin Ball, I hope Poyet does well.

They would have stayed up with O'Neil anyway. Nuts. No, they wouldn't. They were heading to the Championship under O'Neil. I've said it before & I'll repeat it again, PDC was good choice had they given him a contract until the end of the season. Taking them forward, he was always going to be a disaster. Poyet isn't the worst choice in the world, if he can keep Sunderland up this season. Given the time to build, I think he'll do a reasonable job but he may just have been left with pile of rubbish by PDC's summer transfer spree in which case they could be as good as down by Christmas. Window Cleaner Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 Sunderland looked OK in the first half against Utd, their problem is Altidore, he's just too slow and doesn't look too bright. They should try Wickham on point instead, can't be any worse really. Perhaps their US owner stipulates at least 1 yank in their side though. dellboypete Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 A lot of people on here don't seem to like him? I also don't like him as a person, but I thought he was a very good manager at Brighton and given the right club and tools he could go a long way. Unfortunately for him I don't think sunderland are that club.
Minty Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 Excellent player who I had a lot of respect for, a decent manager too IMO, although yet to prove anything at the top level. But I have lost a lot of respect for him because of the way he handles himself and media situations, not to mention some of his tactics. But you can't deny he has shown a lot of managerial promise. Beyond that though, I don't care too much and am also not sure how well he'll do at Sunderland... but he can't take them any lower so probably worth a go from his point of view. Not convinced by this. I think in the end Sunderland only needed 5 points from 7 games to stay up - despite their terrible form, O'Neill stood a decent chance of getting at least one win and two draws from remaining fixtures. Minsk Posted 8 October, 2013 Share Posted 8 October, 2013 I hope he fails big time. He is almost a odious at his predecessor. Also, the worst match I have ever seen was Saints home to his Brighton where they started time wasting, and diving, from the very first minute. I really want Sunderland, Wet Sham and Palace to go down this season.

I did a round trip from Plymouth for that game on a Tuesday night. One of the worst games I've ever seen and all because of his tactics. Penalty miss was quality though. Inferior side devises tactics to get a point away from home, what's wrong with that? You just have to accept that football is about getting as many points as you can to give yourself a chance of promotion or not gettinbg relegated or whatever. They were inferior, they stimied us, mission accomplished. .

That's not football in my opinion. In my opinion, football is a form of entertainment. That was far from entertaining.

buctootim Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 You accept that is part of the game within reason, but Brighton's efforts were just plain cynical. Window is right. No its not entertaining football; yes its cynical; would they have got a point and tried to match us in an open game? no; did his tactics succeed in frustrating Saints and the crowd? yes. Poyet is an effective manager for his side even if he isn't a popular one in football generally.
