Saint_Tony Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 [/b] why? why can't this form go on? why can't we lose one in seven for the rest of the season? why do we have to ship goals in like we used to? surely the longer this form continues and the season goes on, then we should be less likely to accept defeat? Because it's not realistic, our squad isn't at the level of the 'big 6' yet, it's as simple as that. Our start has been very positive but we can't expect to keep it up. We're a work in progress. It's perfectly fine to talk about Champions League and targets for the season, but it's not going to happen overnight and certainly not this season. And we don't 'have to ship goals' but it's going to happen at some point and in my opinion it'll be next weekend.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Will need another man of the match performance from Boruc if we have any hope here. Not really fair, we played very well against Liverpool and the Baggies, well against West-Ham and Palace and poorly against Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich. It's been a mixed batch but we're hardly playing poorly all the time we're just as likely to turn out an amazing performance as a dire one at the moment IMO. Professor Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 If you were doing the Football Pools (remember them) as my Dad used to, then based on League position he'd put this down for a draw. Problem with predicting draws is that a bit of luck for one team or the other and one goal scored or a chance missed can turn a draw into a home or away win. My Dad never made his fortune on the Pools anyway, so what did he know. It's hard for Saints' fans to predict a win at OT because you pinch yourself and assume that something that good just can't happen, even though it is what happened at Anfield. Fact is we go into this game with a good record earned over 2 months of Prem football, good players, a team containing a lot of international players and players who are confident. The tools are in place to win this, we just need the luck not to go against us. To people worried about strength in depth, it doesn't matter how good United's reserves are, they can only play 11 players plus subs and we have a good enough squad that our subs are a match for theirs. Cabrone Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Well if there is a good time to play Utd it must be now. We ran them ragged last season without the end product, let's hope Dani and Ricky can apply the killer touches this time around. A win really would make the neutrals sit up and take note. Window Cleaner Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 (edited) Well if there is a good time to play Utd it must be now. We ran them ragged last season without the end product, let's hope Dani and Ricky can apply the killer touches this time around. A win really would make the neutrals sit up and take note. The only thing most of them would take note of is that Utd lost at home again. The result may largely depend on who comes through the bout of international matches unscathed or at least undiminished. An injury to say Rooney,RVP or Carrick wolud improve our chances whilst an injury to Lovren would improve theirs. As we have less players on international duty than they have the odds may well be in favour on that one. Their joust with Sociedad three days later may well infulence the composition of their side as well especially with players like Valencia and Hernandez although I don't actually know whether Mexico have games or not. Saint Troy Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Because it's not realistic, our squad isn't at the level of the 'big 6' yet, it's as simple as that. Our start has been very positive but we can't expect to keep it up. We're a work in progress. And we don't 'have to ship goals' but it's going to happen at some point and in my opinion it'll be next weekend. The start of the season has been fantastic but really we need no injuries in certain positions else that will cause us big problems. Its the fine lines that win and lose games at prem level wit hevery team capable of beating each other - see Fontes backpass against wigan that lead to a goal ;ast season and his backpass against Swansea that didn't. Is the fine line that it was a bit of luck or was Lovrens quality and ability to get back and stop the goal the difference? Sometimes these fine lines are luck but its also true that the harder you work the luckier you seem to get and it may be a bit of both. I don't feel we have the quality in depth to compete for top four but if we carry on demanding these standards and are as successful in the next three transfer windows as the last then suddenly weve got a squad there not just a team and beginnings of a squad. If I was a betting man id have two on, 2-0 saints cause I want to believe theyre low on confidence and we can press them in to errors and also 4-0 united, I can really understand all those feeling it has to click for utd at some point and weve got to have them go in off the post at the wrong end at some point not out like dyers and wouldn't it just be like utd to do that
Professor Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 I agree with Window Cleaner that if we win, the story for the papers will still be focused on United. Can just picture: "Pressure Grows on Moyes as United fall to win against Southampton." Expect very little credit if we win whilst if lose I can see it being portrayed as United putting their poor start behind them. Wouldn't disagree with Saint Tony's comment about our squad not being at the level of the Big 6 but if that is true over the squad as a whole, I'm not sure it's true over our preferred starting 11. Having some weaker second string players only matters if you have to put them on the pitch for too long, which as Saint Troy said, depends on whether we get injuries in certain positions. That could affect us later in the season but it shouldn't be a problem at Old Trafford unless anyone comes back injured from the international break. Minty Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Clearly for most people, Utd losing would be the story, but given some of the press we have started to receive after our start to the season, I think there would be a fair amount of credit and kudos coming our way. But we're getting ahead of ourselves anyway. Anyone who goes to Old Trafford would be happy to just not lose, and I'll absolutely settle for that - but I am more confident than I can ever remember about the *potential* for us to go there and win. Window Cleaner Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 (edited) Lovren not having a great game for Croatia and getting crucified by Lukaku, still as long as he does it for them and not for us it doesn't matter. Then again Croatia have nothing to gain and nothing to lose so they may well be treating the game as a bit of a jolly. They know Belgium will crush Wales so they cannot win the group and Serbia are 6 points behind. Edited 11 October, 2013 by Window Cleaner

Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 13 October, 2013 Share Posted 13 October, 2013 Just stuff about Cabaye, Cisse, Ashley, their fans expectations and attitude. Not seen him do anything Saints related. He said that he wanted to get back into management quickly after Charlton, even if that meant going to a club that was in a division like we were. He was asked about Rickie and he said that Cortese was a 'tough chairman, and that was the most positive he could be about him' and questioned whether he seriously wanted us to spend £1m on a 27 year old. He said he wanted to sign Rickie when he was manager of Charlton and felt he had something special to offer us despite the fact Pardew saw Rickie as a "fat man" who spent to much time in Blackpool and needed to lay off the pies! It was all good natured obviously, and said Rickie adjusted his lifestyle so, so quickly and he couldn't have wished it to happen to a nicer man than him. He said it is a great story of English football in the last 10 years. Pardew also said it wasn't just Rickie who is great for us, and mentioned Lallana and the fact that he is very proud of the job he did, and the side he left with us. I agree.
