Midtable United v Saints Build Up Thread

Apart from the fact that they won 4 League titles, 1 European Cup, 2 FA Cups and 1 League Cup in the next 7 seasons under Fagin and Dalglish.

(And don't forget the Screensport Super Cup in which they beat us in the group stage.)

Yep. Pretty poor.

I didnt say they stopped winning things. I inferred that the writing was on-the-wall for their over-bearing dominance of the English game. And it was. The same way it is now for Manyoo, imo..

The thing that unsettled Swansea for our first goal was the pressing from the front, again. We battered United second half at Old Trafford last year and need to apply the same tactics next Saturday. The five goals they scored against us were soft defensively, they won't have the same luxury this season.

I'd start with the same 11 with the obvious exception of Shaw for Fox.

Unfortunately can see a narrow defeat here, same result as last season. I can't see Man U losing two games in a row at OT. The next 3 games after this one are the ones we really need to pick up points in. Anything at Man U will be a bonus.

Please play Anderson, Cleverley and Nani. Does Zaha have some sort of tropical disease? How he can't get in that United midfield is ridiculous. Easily winnable.

Zaha has some sort of adaptation problems I believe, there was even talk of him being loaned out a while back. Ferguson bought him, Moyes doesn't seem to rate him anywhere near as highly. Seems to be a right mess.

What a change in our fortunes that United's own fans' forum is nervous about them playing us. If Shaw is available instead of Fox, then we have every chance of producing an upset. They have better players than us overall, but I still believe that we may have the advantage in midfield and defence over them and if we keep them bottled up in their own half, we can frustrate them and nick a result. I genuinely don't think that we fear them and team confidence must be sky high at the moment. There really can be no better time to play them than now.

Can't wait for this. Sh*tty international break. Still, more time for MP to put a good game plan in place. Seems we thrive on games against the so called 'top six' under Poch.

Liverpool 0-1 Saints

Spurs 1-0 Saints (good performance, deserved more)

Saints 2-1 Chelsea

Saints 3-1 Liverpool

Saints 3-1 Man City

Man Utd 2-1 Saints (good performance)

Could throw in 2-2 at Chelsea and 1-1 at home against Arsenal in there at the start of 2013. That's a pretty good record against the big teams.

Anyone who had seen them getting mauled by Sunderland last Saturday would be doubtful of their ability against a side with a mean defensive record. If Sunderland had had a real striker or even converted a couple more of the easy chances that they had Utd wouldn't have gcome back from the dead. Altidore is crap and Giaccherini missed a real sitter.

Rumour is that he's sh*gging Moyes's daughter http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2442327/Wilfried-Zaha-Manchester-United-star-denies-affair-David-Moyes-teenage-daughter-Lauren.html

Wow, from those photies I'd get Mrs Moyes to do the half time talks, players would be afraid of her, probably more afraid than they ever were of Sir Alex. Hard looking lady.

As it stands, do we have a better midfield than Utd?

As things stand, I will go out on a limb and say that we do not just have a better midfield, we have a better 'team.'

We do not have as much talent in our players/squad though. If Manchester United click they will beat us.

That's just the thing, you never know what Utd's team is going to look like, Moyes just dips into a sort of mega million £ jamboree bag and pulls out a few plastic knick knacks from within. He won't play Kagawa, he won't play Zaha and he likes the dimuntive Phil Jones at CB.

I am sure he has come out to say its complete rubbish. Of course he would say that but, then 1) going after the manager's daughter would be completely nuts, and 2) its the Daily Fail

The law of sod.

We're above them, we've conceded 2 goals in 7 games, their fans are worried about us... all points to defeat really!

If they create the chances that Swansea did, then their misfiring strikers will be filling their boots. Luke Shaw to return, please

I would deny it as well, Mum looks like a real dragon, wouldn't like to get caught tupping her daughter myself.

Quite clearly due a defeat and United will pick up soon, 4-1(Rooney x2, Nani, Fellaini, Rodriguez) I'm afraid. No shame in losing to them despite their current league position. Fulham the week after is far more important, just worried that they might have a new manager in place by then

Yep, that would be typical saints. Thing is, though, we are so atypical of saints at the moment, looking relatively comfortable holding onto leads, solid at the back, and a bit dull going forward. I'm used to seeing us panic at the back and having the whole stadium biting their nails when one up. On Sunday it was fairly calm for most of the second half, and a little bit boring. Very strange feeling for a saints fan.

Given that, I think it will be close either way. They clearly have the players to break us down, but the win at Sunderland papered over the cracks, they're not playing well. Their defence is ropey, their midfield looks weak and inconsistent, and apart from Rooney they've not clicked up front yet. At the risk of tempting fate, I just don't see us letting in a hatful, or them of scoring that many either. Not saying we will win, but think it will be close.

Yes, we have an undeniably excellent defensive record, but Swansea had a lot of chances on Sunday and on another day it could easily have been a different scoreline. I'd love nothing more than another 2 0 victory, but this sort of form won't last forever, and we need to accept that at the season goes on.

I doubt spurs expected to ship three at home to West Ham when they were at the time the equal best defence in the league. We're solid these days, but we'll still get tonked at least once this season, and away at OT is as likely a place as any.

If I was a United player, coming back from the international break with tired legs or a knock or jet lag, Southampton are the last team I would want to play against, with all the pressing and hassling throughout the 90 mins. Plus all the leg work when Saints are keeping possession.

Doesn't the same apply to our internationals facing a top PL team?

Cant see them losing two league games at home in a row.Narrow defeat i reckon.

anyone remember a few years back when utd lost 5-1 at newcastle, and then had to play a small, not very good, mid to lower table club away from home. all predictions were that they would bounce straight back, and anyway, it would be a long, long time brfore they let five in in one game again. anyone remember what happened next?

saints win. don't know the score, don't care who scores.

why? why can't this form go on? why can't we lose one in seven for the rest of the season? why do we have to ship goals in like we used to? surely the longer this form continues and the season goes on, then we should be less likely to accept defeat?

31 Boruc

02 Clyne

03 Yoshida

05 Hooiveld

13 Fox (Shaw - 78' )

04 Schneiderlin Booked

10 Ramirez (Lallana - 46' )

18 Cork

42 Puncheon (S Davis - 46' )

07 Lambert

09 Rodriguez

This was the team that played at Old Trafford last year. Interestingly, only four of the starters (Boruc, Clyne, Scheiderlin and Lambert) are likely to start this time round. It shows how much the team has evolved over the last 9 months.

Puncheon was the instigator that day, I think we do miss him, I'm not saying he was great every game

That is an interesting stat, although it's probably going to be 7 of the team that finished last season's match + 3 new signings and Fonte.

Will be interesting to see if Ramirez regains his place on the bench or Guly is used again.

Gaston or Guly on the bench = no brainer for me
Without being clear on why Ramirez wasn't included in the 18 for the Swansea game, it is speculation, but I'm not sure what Ramriez could do between now and the Man Utd game to change anything, so I guess it's likely to be Guly again? Unless Ramirez was dropped as a one-off kick up the back-side?
