Midtable United v Saints Build Up Thread

The next match is the big one! Saints were the best team to play at Old Trafford, said Ferguson, but we didn't win.

Since then we have successfully strengthened both defence and attack and are on our best run for years. We have a healthy goal difference and our main strikers are scoring again.

Manure have stuttered since Moyes took over, but they have a new strike star in Janusaj.

How do the two teams compare now?

Bring it on!

We are in form, Manchester United are looking to turn a corner.

This is such a weird feeling; I fear it's going to be a massive anti-climax for us.

We can beat them, we have no better chance of winning at Old Trafford in the league then this but all runs must come to an end and Manchester United surely cannot stutter this much for an extended period.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-0 Saints

Lovren and Fonte can easily keep an out of form Van Persie under control.

Wanyama can muscle Rooney out of the game, and probably frustrate him enough to get him sent off eventually.

Lambert will give an aging Rio a tough test.

I'd be tempted to start Rodriguez up front with Lambert. Really hope he doesn't put Rodriguez in at the expense of Davis, he doesn't perform playing deeper.

I really hope we beat them this season after our horrible luck last year. If we perform and they don't then we'll get the three points but it's anyone's guess how they'll line up after the internationals or how their poor run of form will affect them coming back.

I can still hardly believe we came away with two defeats from our games last season.

Having already beaten Liverpool at Anfield there is no logical reason for Saint's fans to worry about playing Man U at OT. The two-week rest should be of more help to us than it is to them and would anyone argue as to which Manager is more likely to send out the better prepared team? 2-0 to the Saints.

I'll still worry, because they're a better team than us and they're playing at home. We're capable of getting something and no result would surprise me but they haven't become a poor team overnight.

No, but they've lost what was holding together and papering over the cracks of a very average United side. It'll be hard to get anything there, but no reason we can't.

I'm amused to see the Manc who has completely misunderstood the meaning of "headstrong" - it doesn't mean "mentally strong", it means determined but reckless.

We did play very well there for 45 minutes and it's interesting how highly the Man U fans remember that.

What Saints have now is not automatic points on the board, but it's a couple of systems and personnel that give us the opportunity to play and compete for 3 points anywhere in the Premier League, and that's really all you can expect and hope for.

The important thing is to go there with real belief that we can achieve something, not just hope to keep the score down.

I don't think the current team is lacking in belief, rightly so - even last season we were unlucky not to get anything up there - though we did have the element of surprise that time with Pochettino new to the job at the time.

Depends who Moyes decides to play in midfield. Think Fellaini will still be out so that means Carrick,Cleverly,Anderson and Nani to choose from in theory. Carrick didn't look at all great on Saturday so if he produces more of the same Morgan and Victor will eat them alive. Hope he plays Vidic and Jones in central defence again though...that was awful unless of course you see it from an opponents point of view. Sunderland squandered a shedload of chances and of course were made to pay for that in the end. If they'd had anyone more effective than Altidore on point they could have got 6 at least.

Cant see them losing two league games at home in a row.Narrow defeat i reckon.

Can understand why you are saying that, but its simply evidence of the fact that the football-watching world simply hasnt got its head around the fact that Ferguson is gone. ManYoo have fallen back into the pack. I think its simply reassertion of the natural order of things.

Look at Liverpool, they were never the same after Bob Paisley retired. Their time is over, imo.

It's probably something to do with Ferguson no longer being there but Utd's defence is ageing and has become porous. Vidic looked awful on Saturday, Rio looked like a complete mug against West Brom and the others are all erratic too. For years they've relied on Vidic and Rio to shore up at the back whilst they ground sides down and eventually got Fergie time winners. Now they ship goals that they wouldn't have done 2 seasons back. They have failed to reinforce the CB positions in due time and now they are paying the price.

Apart from the fact that they won 4 League titles, 1 European Cup, 2 FA Cups and 1 League Cup in the next 7 seasons under Fagin and Dalglish.

(And don't forget the Screensport Super Cup in which they beat us in the group stage.)

Yep. Pretty poor.

Can someone who knows Maya ask him to put in a shout with his mate kagawa when we go up north for a cheeky loan deal, perfect person to play 10 instead of Gaston, he was immense there for borrussia and we could never buy him but 6 months of playing regularly for a team leading up to the World Cup might help sway him.

As Pep Guardiola once said of Pochettino's Espanyol side: '"There are teams that wait for you and teams that look for you: Espanyol look for you'.

If we wait for United, we will get beaten. If we go looking for them, press them high, chase every ball and don't give them a moment's rest on the ball, we have a great chance at getting a result.

Carrick is nothing special when he's put under pressure, Cleverley is toss, and Anderson isn't great. If we can win the midfield battle then we've got half a chance of winning.

Is fellaini not playing? Him vs Wanyama should be interest!

If there was a game where any result would be no surprise, then this is it.

I think it's going to be a very nervous game for both sides and I will be looking out for some shocking errors of judgement from both teams. I feel that this game is totally unpredictable

Seems a trifling injury to keep a footballer out for very long. Still it's Utd so they could just be using it as an excuse (sorry reason) to keep him out of international games. As they've Sociedad on the Wednesday after they play us they'll surely be up to all of their usual injury stunts as far as internationals are concerned. Think Belgium are already pretty much qualified already as they only need a point from games against Croatia and Wales..

Agreed. I'd drop Lambert and bring in Cork or Davis alongside Spiderman, with VW as a sweeper between them and the back 4.

I think our defence is better than theirs (when all are fit), but they have a vastly superior choice of attacking talent in their squad. I'd be very happy with a draw (unless we're 3 up with 15 minutes to go and blow it!)

Too defensive for me. If we turn up thinking we need to show them respect we'll lose. We need to be in their face, giving no time on the ball, like 2nd half last season. JRod for Osvaldo to give more energetic pressing high up the pitch. JWP and Cork on the bench to close the game out once we're 2 or 3 up.
