exit2 Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 Ok after a post on facebook today, I asked my friends what they thought of Wanyama. Personally I can see he should be a good player but I still dont see his worth at £12m? So far I think his touch isnt the greatest? His passing is crap? and Would rather Cork? My friends were split 50 50 on whether they agreed with me or not? your thoughts or have I got it all wrong?
Batman Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 do you not think part of the £12m was for potential thought he was pretty good today and only 21.
Saint-Armstrong Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 His defensive duties are superb. He shields that back four so well, he displaces attackers, breaks down their attacks and is tenacious in the tackle and physical aerially. He's not a marauding ball-player, but he's very good at the defensive stuff. Hey, we're 4th and have lost just one game. Victor has most certainly played his part and if Saints finish Top 7 or 8, he has been worth it.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 We talked about this a lot the first few weeks of the season. On one hand we have a player with a massive physical presence, tackles well, is very mobile, strong, has great positional sense, and allows others in the team to go forward. On the other hand he has no touch and every pass is an adventure.

An improvement on cork i think.terrible passer but that what morgan is for along side him.puts his foot in more than cork.is always wanting the ball and for me he is what saints have missed for years. Very much a 12 mil player in todays market who will only get better
trousers Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 (edited) He does what he was brought in to do superbly. I'm not worried about the things he doesn't do too well as that's not what he was brought in for. Our goals against stats this season are testament to his addition to the team (in addition to Lovren of course). Cestrian Saint Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 Not worth anywhere near the £12m that we paid for him, but then who is??? I'd still rather see Cork & Morgan reunited. They were superb last season and I don't understand why a solid partnership was broken up to include Wanyama.

They were superb last season and I don't understand why a solid partnership was broken up to include Wanyama. Here's a few reasons to help your understanding.... We now have the best defence in the league... He is a massive part of that. 5 clean sheets from 7 games. We are 4th in the league on merit. Wanyama has played in everyone of those games... And our position and stature is directly correlated to him being there. So that's why Jack Cork doesn't get a look in. Lets turn it on its head then.... Given how very very stable we are defensively... Why on earth would anyone take out Big Vic when clearly what he is doing is working wonders?! Chez Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 (edited) if he sticks to passes less than 10 yards he looks great. Any time he tries something longer he looks woeful. Glad we bought him as we now how great stremgth in depth in that position, but I wonder just how badly either of our two central midfielders are going to have to be playing to let Cork get a game. KelvinsRightGlove Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 I think fans get too hung up on fees at times. I know it sounds ridiculous, and yes it is ridiculous. But let's be honest, Football is ridiculous. It's a soap opera for men really. We need to move on a bit from when we were last in the prem, or even from the recent years in League 1 and the Championship. The money from TV deals, sponsorship etc is so far removed from reality is untrue. A £12m signing in 2013 is not a £12m from 2005, its not even the same as it was in 2010. I know that sounds silly, but what I mean by this is, with the latest TV deal increasing the money clubs receive further still the team at the bottom of the league this year receive as much in tv & prize money as when City won the league last year. Clubs are much richer now, what seems like huge sums aren't as huge as they once were. I keep trying to make this point, and I keep trying to explain myself as best I can - but I guess I'm not doing a great job. I'm not sure on the exact figures, but I would be surprised if us laying out £12m on a player now is actually a massive increase on % of total revenue than say compared to the £4m signing of Rory Delap way back when. Think of it another way, back then your transfer record fees were around the £15/20/30m tops mark - a £4m is around 30/20/10ish % of that. Now, you have Gareth Bale going for around £85-90m, a £12m signing is around 15% of that. FWIW I think Big Vic is a very good player. It cannot simply be coincidence that since the introduction of him (and Lovren of course) has changed how we look defensively almost beyond recognition. Having a defence that strong is such an asset, it means you are almost never out of a game, or more than a goal away for at least a point in most matches. Vic has definitely played a big role in making it harder to score against, and ultimately beat us. For that reason, I think he is a good signing and a good player. He's still at a good age where there is room for him to improve.
S-Clarke Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 I think our defensive stats and our clean sheets record, kind of dismiss any doubt in his ability. He was brought in to offer defensive grit and stability in the midfield to shield the back 4. That's what he does, he does it very, very well. He's not a pretty player and never will be, but his impact on our side is unquestionable. Stop trying to look for amazing passes and an amazing touch, as he's not gifted in that sense. His game is not about the pretty side of the game.

Whitey Grandad Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 Quite an article on big Vic in the Sunday Times today. Describes how he heard the news about the Nairobi massacre just before the game at Anfield. Also talks about his family, all of them quite sporty. CWD Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 It is no coincidence that since Big Vic joined the party we have only conceded 2 goals. A good buy. This. He's not in the team to be creative. Against Palace he won everything, and is so important to us defensively. He's like a bigger more aggressive Makelele and only 21. Also would say the turn up in Lallana's form has something to do with VW being in the team. Has far less defensive work to do.

kpturner Posted 6 October, 2013 Share Posted 6 October, 2013 Defensive destroyer - not a playmaker. I think he must be one of several reasons why we have so much tighter at the back this season. I don't expect to see him making any defence splitting passes any time soon.

Saint George Posted 7 October, 2013 Share Posted 7 October, 2013 It's really quite simple....Without Victor Wanyama, we almost certainly wouldn’t be sitting in 4th place with the best defensive record in the Prem and the 2nd best in Europe .......Is he worth 12 mil?.....every damned penny of it, and some….I have a sneaking suspicion Tino would probably say the same

sidthesquid Posted 7 October, 2013 Share Posted 7 October, 2013 He is starting to win me over - part of the trouble was that our first two home games were against teams that refused to attack, so he was somewhat redundant as a defensive midfielder. The last two games you can see what he is about, and I thought his presence in midfield made a huge difference to us holding onto our lead against a combative and attacking team. sussexsaint Posted 7 October, 2013 Share Posted 7 October, 2013 He is a major reason we have conceeded so few goals. The back 4 must love his breakup play.
