Miley Cyrus vs Sinéad O'Connor

I don't normally go for celebrity tittle tattle, but I am interested in the ongoing feud between Miley Cyrus and Sinéad O'Connor. Miley is the daughter of Achy Breaky Heart singer Billy Ray Cyrus, and has spent much of her life in the public eye due to being the lead in Hannah Montana (a humourless Disney Channel live action series ). She has even featured on here, in the thread "Hot daughters of famous people". Post Hannah Montana, she hit the headlines for "twerking" against Robin Thicke during the MTV Video Music Awards.

Following the release of "Wrecking Ball", a video in which she appears naked and licks sledge-hammers, she cited Sinéad O'Connor as an influence, which prompted O'Connor to write this open letter:-

Miley shot back with tweets that mocked O'Connor's bi-polar disorder, pulling up some tweets from a couple of years ago when she was at a low. O'Connor is now on her third open letter and legal action looks set to ensue.

And a third....

My interest? Perhaps I'm getting old, but its a bit jarring to see someone my kids watched on the Disney Channel turn into such an overt sexual presence. Kids will see her as some kind of role model, and in a time when children are exposed to sexual imagery far too young, this is a step too far. What next? Penetrative sex during dress changes?

Conspiracy hat on for a second, at least one side is using this for publicity; both have something to promote. Cyrus is restyling herself as a hip hop queen while O'Connor is on tour. I personally don't think O'Connor is doing this to advance her career. She's had a long history of being outspoken on a number of issues, often to the detriment of her music career. I think O'Connor is bang on in most of her analysis. Opinions will vary, of course.

I think some of the stuff about Miley is going a bit overboard in my opinion. Yes, what she's doing is often tasteless, and I have to admit even I find it uncomfortable to watch and a bit embarrassing (I'm really rather dull for a 24 year old aren't I?).

However, she is far from the first woman to do this, and most likely will not be the last. I don't see anything that much worse than what has been done before, and as far as I can recall there never seemed to be quite this much outrage about it all. Although, I do find it quite reassuring most people widely disapprove of her actions of late. I personally find this the best possible lesson for children. It's all about education, I think their is certainly something to show children in her behaviour and the reaction to it. Though, then again I don't have kids, so I may well be way off the mark.

This whole public spat is a bit silly, IMO. Miley's reaction is far from surprising. Her posting the pictures of Sinead O'Connor's tweets is vulgar to be honest. I actually find this far worse than the twerking, awful haircut, the sudden allergy to clothing, that ridiculous tongue that just cannot seem to stay in her mouth (seriously, it's only a matter of time before someone slaps their wang on it, and then I'll get carted off to jail) or anything else I have most likely forgotten combined.

It is simply not on to mock mental illness in my opinion, and dragging Amanda Bynes in, who most likely is in need of help, for no reason is really vile.

I don't really get what Sinead O'C was hoping to achieve. I can't say I pictured this panning out much different when I first read her letter. And seriously, threatening to sue her over a picture of her tweets, well that's just a bit silly. I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure you cannot sue someone for posting a a picture of something you wrote in a public space like that. I think it was an awful thing for Miley to do, but I'd be hugely surprised if O'C could get anywhere with it.

how does licking sledgehammers help you sell records anyway? I mean why does it help to be attractive to old pervs? She could be shoving sledgehammers up her snatch and i still wouldn't be buying her records.

explain it to me! Why does giving men boner help sell records, when men with boner aren't the people buying ur records?

I'm glad O'Connor went public with her thoughts, then again I'm not Miley Cyrus (despite persistent rumours). Sensible thoughts from O'Connor and I'm not sure Cyrus has much to complain about. If you take your clothes off for an international pop single then you must expect people are going to talk about it.

The thing I take from the exchange is that O'Connor makes some interesting and thought provocative points and Cyrus doesn't.

I expect the thinking is the same as it always is. Push the boundaries a little bit further to generate publicity. She's already in the nip in that video. I expect the sledgehammer is supposed to be something that represents something else.

It's not necessarily old pervs that'll go for that stuff anyway. Probably designed to appeal to hormonal teenage boys.

I think the thing that really brought O'Connor into it was being cited as an influence. Don't know this for sure, but Cyrus' thinking is probably as simple as "she has short hair like me". Or maybe her people knew what sort of character O'Connor was and decided that it'd be good marketing. Who knows?

I thought it was bad enough when Avril Lavigne referred to herself as "punk" (translation: pop singer in grottier garments). Cyrus can't know anything about her career save Nothing Compares 2 You (which tbf, is what most people know her for). She's tweeting pictures of O'Connor ripping up pictures of Pope John Paul II to illustrate that she is somehow imbalanced, even though that action was a protest about the cover-up of child abuse in the Catholic church.

I dlsliked Billy Ray Cyrus back in the day, but I do have to wonder what sort of father would allow his daughter to be exploited in this way. Ok, she's an adult; he can't tell her what to do, but he's on the box defending her.

Look at the still in the Miley Video in your post. I think that is what she is referring to. Something about her dog dying or something, so those tears are just so real.

They want you to 'jizz' on their tits instead of somebody else's. Can't for the life of me think why.

I enjoyed Miley's video a great deal by playing it with the sound off listening to a Mavis Staples CD in the background. This is the way to listen to modern chick music, watch the young birds wriggling around half naked whilst listening to some proper female singers you wouldn't want to see cavorting around unless in a burka.

A lot of this imagery is being dreamt up by her current mentor Terry Richardson.

Google him. Plenty of complaints from models about his behaviour, getting naked on set etc. But he's an artistic genius doncha know.

Some really get into it e.g.Lindsay Lohan. Plenty of time to regret it later.

Here's some of his older work. NSFW!!!

Christ almighty. Thanks pal, thats an image I could have happily lived without

I only add this update since there's a Southampton connection. Something in the water here obviously.

New Petition Demands Fashion Industry To Stop Hiring "Alleged Sex Offender" Terry Richardson!

And after the internet was flooded with scantily clad photos of Miley Cyrus this month, Alice Ehrenfried from Southampton, UK finally had enough.

She launched a Change.org petition titled: Vogue, H&M, Mango, Supreme, & all other brands: Stop using alleged sex offender Terry Richardson as your photographer.

The petition itself
