Supporting Our Supporters

Does our club do anything?

Notice Fulham are now offering free coaches to away games similar to Stoke + junior season ticket holders now go for free!

Swansea are also offering away support incentives and freebies incl. free food at SMS this weekend.

What do we get other than the club not taking full away support allocations?

We've offered a free meal to students that buy tickets from Southampton Solent uni I believe. They're likely not to be regulars at St Mary's so Saints really aren't rewarding their proper fans. What's wrong with taking a chunk off of away ticket prices for our actual fans that can be arsed to travel to watch us regularly?

As a premium club offering a premium product then i am glad we are not devaluing the overall quality of the said product by giving away some pathetic, fatuous gesture like free coach travel. Aligned to the fact that the club are thinking of the health of their fans by not offering free food to the already fat framed average football fan to gorge themselves on. Supporting Southampton is not something that is to be taken lightly and is an honour not right. The chosen ones should be happy to dig into their pockets to follow this incredible football club. I applaud Cortese for keeping this club an exclusive brand and not giving way to the pressure of the give it to me now, want something for nothing generation.

How long before this game was that announced though?

We could well be doing free travel to Newcastle or Sunderland, or something away to one of the London based clubs (free tube ticket would be good?). Won't be announced until closer the time though, I'd imagine.

Apparently each club was supposed to have announced what they were doing with the £200k by the end of September. I don't think we're alone in not having done so yet, and given the absolute cluster**** that is the SFC ticket office these days, it's hardly a massive surprise either.

Which is what?

Think it's £2 off each away ticket their fans buy

Correct, that's my understanding of what they're doing. Means that those that go away regularly throughout the year get a good deal, not just those doing a one off as its a freebie or only those that live in the city and choose to go by coach getting a good deal.

It will have nothing to do with the £200k, which has to be used specifically for the club's away fans.

Ignore me then. Thank f*ck for that. Thought it was similar to what Swansea were doing with the free meal at our place on Sunday but didn't know it had to be for away fans. Agreed though the fairest way of doing it is to knock a quid or 2 off the price of every away ticket.

Not sure if that link will work or if that's what we're doing with this £200k. I bloody hope it ain't.

Nothing to do with the £200k thankfully, but still a pretty strange offer, don't know why that offer can't be for say all under 21s rather than just those that happen to work or study at a particular institution.

Maybe something to do with the link between the club and Soton Solent Uni? We do all our testing and a lot of pre season stuff there I think?

It's odd that the club will do this for people who probably don't even support the club, but weren't willing to do a kids deal for the Bristol City game.

So, seeing as they have £200k to spend on away travel, I guess you're supporting the renting of a lear jet for a few hours to take fans to an away match (but not bring them back)? :D

Good idea, or how about we rent a private Jet, all the season ticket holders go into a draw and the winner gets to fly to that game with Cortese?

If I was the club I'd be making sure that each year's influx of students to the Proper Uni and the Chimpstitute were encouraged to follow the local team, many of them will end up living here long term. I've just done a survey, and it's 100% of them currently sat in my living room! Whether that's student discount or however they do it, there's a viable new market there and the club should always be looking to increase its following.

That certainly sounds like the spirit of the promotion.

Come to think of it, the club could then refuse to fulfil the prize for the competition winner and then pay out compensation at the last minute if it got to court. Everyone's a winner.

The main job of a club is to subsidise its supporters. Free food, free beer, free travel.

I just don't get why Cortese doesn't understand this.

I imagine he just doesn't appreciate the years of support people have gone through.

It must surely entitle them to a slice of cash.

They were there in the hard times.

just to clarify, this is sarcasm...some folk didn't get it last time....

It's no longer a club, it's a business.
