We're down to sixth

Keep the faith. I've just watched the highlights, and Martinez is slowly but surely turning Everton into Wigan

Wigan with Lukaku though, can't understand why Chelsea keep loaning him out when they have attacking problems themselves.

I mean out of Lukaku, today's Torres, Ba and Papy Etoo who would you choose to be 1st rate striker. Don't think Mourinho will last long at Chelsea this time round.Seems to be doing his darndest to extract the urite and get himself sacked.

We aren't sinking like a stone! Just the tables show the reality after all teams have completed 6 games.

Was so happy when Mourinho returned but now sick to the teeth and wish he'd clear off back abroad. He's become a moron and no comparison to the fun loving and amusing José who was popular 7 years ago

THe fact that we are 6th and everyone thinks we have made a fantastic start shows how difficult it is going to be to crack into the top 6. There is a lot of talk about champions league and misty eyed enthusiasm spreading through the fan base but the reality is we've played teams mainly in the bottom half and are 6 with Man United and City performing well below par.

The start has been fantastic and better than most of us expected however it shows how much work there is to be done if we are going to challenge for the top 6 slot some seem to believe is our destiny.

Dell size mentality

One would imagine that this is a tongue-in-cheek quote - our best seasons (1978-1985) were spent at the Dell. Side packed with internationals, great one-touch football, and loads of goals. I, too, have been in the Dell a few times when there were over 31/32,000. Halcyon days, which, most probably, will never be bettered.

I have been in The Dell when there has been over 31,000 in there, have you? I think there are no more than 20 posters on here that can say the same. So if that is Dell size mentality I can live with that.

Utd 69, half of those who attended that day are probably dead, half of the other half probably post on TSW:D

if you mean the 31,044 ?.. (the old Dell record attendance).....I was there, too.

8th October 1969. (wow, it makes you feel old - doesn't it ?)....

Sadly we lost 0-3 to ...Man Utd. (Best, Burns, and Kidd for Utd, but there was no way we were 3 goals worse than them.

Im 1 in the 20!

there will probably be more than 20 of us actually, Saints fans tend to be loyal and TSW posters tend to be aged and decrepid,

I was there aged 14, in the boys section of the choccy boxes. Went straight from Taunton's and just hung about in the ground until kick-off time.

The official Dell record was 31,044 but the unofficial number would have been nearer 35,000 with all those getting in over the turnstiles, the emergency exits and back door.

"Watch my Bobby's legs" was the scream of a Man U female supporter that had the Milton in hysterics. It resulted with Saints supporters all mimicking her every time Charlton got the ball. Having seen George Best play was one of those once in a lifetime experiences. Wasn't it his first game for United that day?

I think you'll find he made his debut in September 1963 as a 17yo and scored in the 1968 European Cup final. Very much an established star by that game. Incidentally, I was in the queue for the boys turnstile outside Archers Road, no more than 10 back when they shut the gates and didn't get in. My dad had gone through one of the gates near to the East Stand and was already inside, can't remember what happened now. Think we just hung around until the end. Anyone care to speculate how many were in the Dell on Monday 3rd May 1976?

I'm another who was there that day...a 13 stone, 6ft 2", 20 year old whose feet hardly touched the ground we were packed so tightly in the Milton. George Best was an established superstar at that time...certainly not a 1st division newcomer.

I wasn't at the united game in 69, but I was in the relegation season of 74. Last home game of the season, just under 31000 there and gates locked at just after 2.

Don't remember seeing much of the game. United supporters everywhere.

Notts Forest.....3-1 down and 3-3 in last 15 mins....cup game.It felt like 35.000

Although I lost count at 30,000:rolleyes: We had drawn 1-1 at Forest. Won replay at Spurs..neutral ground etc.....5-1..

I was there, too. FA Cup 6th round, 1st replay. April 3rd 1963. 2nd replay at The Dell..we were actually losing 0-3....until the 76th minute.

then came goals by Kirby, Grummit O.G. - (though Kirby " helped " him and the ball into the back of the net ), and David Burnside (a classic midfileder of that era.) in the 89th min.

How we didn't score in the 30 mins. of extra time.:?..... I cannnot think even to this day.

the replay at White Hart Lane) with a gate of over 42,000 ....and a lot more Saints fans locked outside the ground .....was a 5-0 slaughter (and we didn't even let them get one goal). Wimshurst' finest game.

Sadly:( the Semi Final at Villa Park (I was there, too ) was played on a mud pile, and the worst game of football I had seen in many a year.

David, am I confusing us playing United in the FA CUP in 1963 when I mention about George Best? Do you have the Manchester United team that day?

My best ever memory was the Forest Cup game and how we came back in the last 10 minutes to earn a reply at White Hart Lane. Everyone was so dejected and felt we were out till the mighty George Kirby rekindled hope and we ended up drawing 3-3. I too was at the Dell, at White Hart Lane and at the heart breaking game at Villa Park. That game at the Dell taught me never to give up hope in a game and often has me calling on the ghost of George to work hisd magic for us.

In a sense, because other teams had games in hand, we never really were 4th or 5th, and although as fans we did get excited, it was good to see that the management and the players remained realistic. As it is, 11 points from 6 games is 1.83 points per game which if projected over the whole season gives a finish of 69 or 70 points, which would probably still be outside the top 6.

There are valid reasons to think our team will improve as Wanyama and Osvaldo become more settled and the young players gain more experience week by week. No one month of 3 or 4 games determines the whole season but by the end of October the picture will look a lot clearer. Win at home to Swansea, which we should if we really are a top 6 contender but win that game and then win away at OT and I will probably open a bottle of champagne, even though WBA have already shown it's not that difficult.

Quite so. We are not 'down' to sixth, we are 'up' in sixth.

I skipped an after school KO game for our school team to watch the Notts Forest game. On the bus to The Dell I found I was travelling with our games master who was also going to the game. I had to put on a heavy limp all the way up Hill Lane just in case he was watching.

I was 15 and just started to venture on to the Milton Road terrace under the Toomers.

The table is meaningless after one game. Before the season even began we were equal top. Or was it equal bottom?

I was looking at the long-term situation, not the daily ups and downs.

No, after any one game it is a matter of extreme importance and meaning, not to mention if only...

I was there, right at the front of the Archers with my big brother and mates. Boy I still recall as the crowd swayed forward not being able to breathe until the pressure of the fans relented as they got back into position in the terrace. The more you think about it the more it is surprising how there were not more Hillsborough disasters I. Those days. Recalling the state of the ground I do feel grateful that the barriers coped with the pressure of the crowds pushing forward

I was there as well!! Milton Road at the front towards the East Stand corner.

My Dad, Grandad, Aunt and Uncle used to get to the ground before the gates opened for the Big Games to make sure we'd get a spot at the front.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Channon Testimonial beat that figure, although the Official 31044 was probably less than actually in the ground for the United game.

Count me in that, but I was standing on a box in the wilton end. And I'm guessing there are rather more than 20 posters on here who could say the same. ;)

I used to be there when we regularly got in excess of 20K in the late 1950's. I remember seeing a young David Webb playing for Leyton Orient, I believe he was about 16 at the time.He had an outsanding game and Ted Bates signed him for us a few weeks afterwards. There were no transfer windows in those days.

Down to seventh as things stand with City 2-1 up at half time against Everton. Our season is disintegrating rapidly, if the trend continues we'll be relegated for sure. Dropped 3 places in the last 7 days.......

..... and yet another Saturday goes by without us scoring from Open Play.

Crisis Time.
