We want José Fonte in the Portuguese National Team!

Hi guys.

I'm from Portugal and i'm here to ask for your help. I created a page on facebook called "We want José Fonte in the Portuguese National Team" and i need your support.

Our Portuguese manager only plays with Bruno Alves (Fenerbahçe) and Pepe (Real Madrid) and they're in such a bad shape. And he keeps ignoring the best portuguese defender. As you guys know, Southampton has only conceded 2 goals this season wich is great for him.

In only 1 day and a few hours i got the support of 148 people, mostly Portuguese guys. But the support of the Southampton people would be a huge deal for me, since you're the ones that can track his career.

People help to get José Fonte in the Portuguese national team. We need him!

All of the posts are in Portuguese but if we gain a lot of English people on our page i'll start posting in English too.

Thank you guys. Hope to see Southampton in Europe next season. :)

PS: sorry for my bad english.

Blimey your English is better than some who post on here: and for them its their Mother tongue!!

If Rickie can do it why not Jose.

My only concern is that he is the Claus in the Claus and Killer partnership that did so well for us in the past, so while he has kept a Japanese first choice centre back out of the team so far this season how much is that down to the presence of Lovren being, to my mind, the dominant part of the pairing: just as Yoshida was last year whilst playing on his wrong side.

Is that Jose himself?

No, just me supporting this cause eheh.

Thanks guys.

He could link up with Pepe if he (Pepe) wasn't in such a bad shape. Portugal is lacking quality in the central back, something that didn't happen in so many years. But José Fonte would be perfect. And has been so good this season, better than other Portuguese defender.

The first two lines of the most recent post translated read:

In my time when the kids wanted to be playing the ball Ronaldo (phenomenon) or Figo. Now everyone wants to be the José Fonte.

Not quite sure I'd go that far! ;-)

Just a little joke eheh. Because he has a lot of videos on Youtube of fans chanting for him... it's quite impressive. We don't see that a lot from Portuguese players, especially of guys like José Fonte that never played for Portugal.

I am Portuguese too, and while I'm happy to see a page like this, the truth is that few people in the Portuguese football crowd know who José Fonte is, let alone that a Portuguese defender is starting for Southampton.

Obviously more people know about him now than actually the number of people that did when he played back in Portugal, but the fact he didn't play regularly for one of the big 3 or even received widespread media attention in his PT career days means he's still pretty much under the radar.

Defending is also not a department where we have been underperforming in this Brazil 2014 campaign.

A call-up is not impossible though, but it's unlikely.

He's one of the five most improved players in the PL according to this:

http://www.teamtalk.com/tottenham-hotspur/8952346/The-PL-s-five-most-improved-players?

"The only defender on this leaderboard is Southampton's Jose Fonte, with the Saints' start this season under Mauricio Pochettino the polar opposite from their return to the top flight last time round. The Southerners had conceded a league high of 18 goals after six matches in the previous campaign, while their success this season - sitting in 6th - can be attributed largely to the joint-best defensive record in the league, with just two goals finding the back of Artur Boruc's net.

Much of that is down to the successful forging of a partnership between Fonte and summer signing Dejan Lovren. Both have scored important goals this season, with the former's averages for aerial duels won (2.6 to 3.8), interceptions (1.4 to 2.8) and clearances per game (8.8 to 9.5) all having improved from the 2012/13 campaign, earning the Portuguese a mark up in rating from 6.87 to 7.61."

Hi guys.

Right now Portugal has 5 central defenders:

Pepe (Real Madrid) - In a horrible shape. But the worst about him it's his hair. Do you see how bad Real Madrid defends? Pepe and Sergio Ramos are so bad... Varane is way better.

Bruno Alves (Fenerbahçe) - He keeps making mistake every game. And he's very rough and agressive. He's a shame.

Ricardo Costa (Valencia) - Probably in the best shape of his career but not good enough. He was only good when he played for Porto with Mourinho.

Rolando (Inter) - Don't get me started on this one. This guy hasn't played more than 10 games in the last 3 years for Porto, Napoli and Inter.

You forgot about one. Luís Neto, he plays for Zenit. Probably the best one against the other 4 but very young and inexperienced.

The good thing about this page is that people are starting to say: "yeah... José Fonte... why not?".

I understand why some Southampton fans don't him on the National Squad because you want him only focused on Southampton and don't want to lose him. The thing is, can you believe the morale boost if he was called-up? He would return stronger than ever!

Cheers!

In fairness though, its not our decision.

They do in Restaurants Iberico and Casa do Quinta at Vale do Lobo.
