SSN: Tony Cascarino 'Saints are my dark horses'

Monk

Recommended Posts

Just watched SSN, discussing title contenders which moved them to the current league table.

Tony raved about our start to the season, three 18 year old lads, our playing style. He said we deserve to be there and it is no shock.

"Every team in the PL will be worried about playing Southampton".

"They are the team to watch out for, they could upset a few"

I **** you not.

He was informed we are 2000-1.

Any one read his autobiog?

Top read and right up with some of the very best sports books.

I have, yeah. Very interesting, very honest book. Particularly about when a big move goes wrong (his move to Chelsea) and the insularity of the football bubble and how that affects your behaviour.

Just top 6 will do this season, even that is being very optimistic!!

We have failed to beat Norwich, W Ham and Sunderland which is a concern for my prediction!

I'll have some of whatever Tony is taking please.

Top 6 is possible (although not probable) with the start that we've made, 11 points from 6 would give you 69 or so from 38 which is comfortably top 6 but a step short of top 5 because last season there was a 9 point gulf between 5th and 6th. Don't think anyone in the whole wide world would be disappointed with 6th though or even 7th provided a top 5 club wins both of the cups and we'd stroll into Europe.

Reality check guys!

Yes we have started well and are difficult to beat but 11 pts from available 18 pts given the fixtures is probably what Cortese would have expected at least.

I think our style is more suited away from home where the opposition will come at us more and leave gaps for us to exploit. At St Marys we lack the guile and conviction to break teams down especially the "lesser" teams who tend to sit back more. Even against Palace it was like we was waiting for them to make a mistake (high pressing game can force oppo into errors granted) rather than us really go at them and cut them open.

Dont want to sound negative but feel we need to remain level headed and not get carried away. It is exciting times to be a Saints fan but it doesnt take much for the optimism to go out the window. On the flip side if our attackers start really clicking and cut teams open then we could be the "Dark Horses" no doubt.

Have you never watched Utd grind down minnows for 90 minutes and then hit them with a Fergie time winner ? All PL teams are decent and have good players, there are no pushovers and you just have to keep on battering them until they crack. As most of you will never have witnessed an Arsenal game in their double year you'll probably not know what I'm on about. Winning is now about constant attrition and little else. I'm sure once we get the League 1 and NPC years out of our system we'll stop expecting champagne football every week; It was so easy then with what turned out to be half a PL team battering the likes of Oldham and Dagenham and Redbridge nigh on every Saturday.

A good read. He was very frank about his dishonesty in playing all those games for Ireland when he didn't qualify.

You mean:

'We haven't won every game'

Ah but for that we'd need to be playing in Germany, Italy or Spain where thare are 2 excellent teams,3 or 4 decent ones and a whole host of piles of crap just waiting to only get beaten by 3 or 4 by Barca or Bayern every week. The PL is the most homogenous football league in the world, there are no bad teams, just a few that can't expect to win more than they lose.

Enlighten mean when this has applied to us this season? Dont think you can say we have battered anyone based on shear pressure applied and chances created. Yes we have a lot of the ball, but most of the time it is not in the dangerous areas.

Not really what I meant, the fact we only picked up 2 points from 9 against those teams mentioned isn't a team that is going to finish top 6.

Sorry, I knew that, I was just being facetious. ;) But we are only looking at a couple of games at the start of the season and a goal or two either way makes a big difference.

You can cherry pick like that for any team though.

Man City you could say 1 point from Stoke, Villa and Cardiff.

Even the eventual Champions will drop "easy" points at some stage, just not as many.

He's been on the funny fags! I'd be happy with top ten personally, and a run in a cup.

Our first team is nearly there, but we lack a consistently creative midfielder, someone that can quickly turn defence into attack, and our squad is nowhere near as strong as other teams'.

Unless that goals dry up for any extended periods though, I don't think we should be concerned with relegation at all. Top ten will be a fine season, with a chance to sign the right players to progress next season.

I'd be disappointed with 10th and would be thinking they could have done better, so would Cortese, Pochettino and the Saints squad.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Everton are 7 teams likely to finish above us (although we are closing the gap on Everton quickly). But which two other sides are better than us for us to finish 10th? Swansea City? Who else? Given the investment in the team over the last 2 years Saints should be looking at overtaking Swansea, West Brom etc.

8th at worst is what Saints should be looking to achieve this season.

I just don't think we have the attacking prowess to finish too high. We're a hard working, committed team, and I've been impressed with how solid we look defensively this season, but I think we lack a quick attacking edge, which is why we've scored only one goal from open play. Maybe that will be addressed in January, and we'll power through the league in the second half of the season, and maybe we can steer clear of injuries, but with the talent we currently have, I think 7th-10th is what we're looking at, and that will be a good season with the personnel we have. That also marks an improvement on last season's 14th. Perhaps not the improvement £30 million of talent should bring, but it's a start. If, and it's a big if, Ramirez can truly become the player we thought we'd signed, then I'd raise my expectations of our finishing position, but I don't think 10th is bad at all.

If you mean compared to the top teams, I have to agree. A couple of key injuries and we could look very ordinary.

I'd have some of 2000/1, seeing as I was informed that we'd come in from 1500/1 to 150/1 having beaten Liverpool.

I was at Oktoberfest this evening.

As usual, it was VERY random.

I talked sh1t with a couple of lads - Bayern Fans.

They gave me a Bayern Munich Membership Card.

I asked Why?

They said they had been watching us and the card would help me get a ticket next Season when we play them in the CL.

They had not been drinking very much it was still about 5pm when this happened.

I was shocked.

They also knew the Lallana song.

I need more beer.

Reading some of the 'happy for tenth' comments is so reminiscent of the comments the board was getting this time two years ago. According to most Premier League was a pipe dream then too.

IMO We've got every chance of surpassing expectations this year too.

A colleague from HQ in Munich knew the Rickie Lambert song.... It's not impossible that the Lallana song would also be known. They utterly love their football out there.

That part is the only bit that is true, apart from Dubai Phil talking sh*t of course.

I was smoking crystal meth the other day in a skag den with Boris Becker and he confirmed golfing Phil's story was true. After a couple of pipes, he sung Pompey fan on a string while Steffi Graf gave us a lap dance for blow backs.

I need another toot.

You sure you weren't on Crack? I am here in Krakow

I believe it. Why, only the other day I was in the town of Juventus and a very similar thing happened. Although I had more beer than Phil because I am like wild and crazy.

Are you a **** in absolutely every post you make on here? It's a remarkable record. Perhaps it comes naturally or maybe you do a fair bit of training. I admire your consistency, in any case...

Because you have Turkish on ignore, are you just moving on to the next one? In that case it seems a bit pointless to have him on ignore in the first place.
