saintant Posted 29 September, 2013 Share Posted 29 September, 2013 Got my ticket for what should be a great evening at The Mayflower on 9th October. Hosted by Skysport's Ed Chamberlain with lots of guest appearances and video links to Matt's admirers (including the brilliant Spanish star Xavi) and team-mates down the years it promises to be a fantastic occasion. Great timing too with Matt recently having been voted into the Football Museum's Hall of Fame. Let's hope it's a full house because Le God certainly deserves this fitting tribute for his outstanding contribution to Southampton Football Club during his years of loyal service. Who else is going along to this?

saintant Posted 6 October, 2013 Author Share Posted 6 October, 2013 Tickets disappearing rapidly by all accounts for what promises to be a good night for Matt. Great time for an event like this with the current team riding high in the league and Matt is now as much a fan as the rest of us. Thought the plane towing the banner over the stadium was a nice touch today. From what I hear there'll be a few surprises on the night even for Matt. Gemmel Posted 9 October, 2013 Share Posted 9 October, 2013 What a great night. Always worried that these sort of things have the potential to fall flat, but the content was superb and at times insightful. Tributes from Xavi, Sir Alex Ferguson, Gary Neville, Mick Channon (Plus Others) and then finished with an interview with Bally about Le Tiss. Only two brief references to Cortese, neither from Le Tiss..... who is loving watching us and wouldnt rule out a European place. A reminder of all hos great goals and feel privelaged to have seen most them of them live. Top night - Top bloke

Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 9 October, 2013 Share Posted 9 October, 2013 Terrific night. Really well presented, put together, and very entertaining. The man deserved such a tribute night, despite his modesty. Great to see Lawrie, Chris Nicholls and Franny again. Excellent tributes from Sir Alex and Xavi too. The Cat Posted 9 October, 2013 Share Posted 9 October, 2013 Loved it. Agree with everything said above. Ed Chamberlain was an excellent choice as host. Fair play to Crossley for traveling down from Sheffield for his 2 minute cameo. Awful penalty from Matty! He seemed genuinely touched by the tributes and the reception from the fans there. Those of us who saw him in his prime were truly lucky people.

Gemmel Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 Interested to hear what SAF and Xavi had to say about Le Tiss if anyone who went can be arsed to summarise? Xavi - Le Tiss was a tremendous player, that he looked up to and loved to watch. He deserved this recognition tonight and his congraualtions came from his heart (His words) SAF - Wonderful player, highest ever scoring premiership player for his team and capped by his Country - What a career and you cant ask more than that from a player. he relived some of the goals he scored against united and mentioned the grey kit :) they then went back to SAF and asked him if he ever tried to sign him. SAF said he was discussed a number of times, against the criteria of how he could improve the team (He spoke as if it would have been a done deal if he had gone in for him - Later dismissed by MLT) but at the times they looked at him, they had Cantona, Hughes etc. so it never happened, but was always on their radar. One Utd quip, that did come out (That tickled me) was that in the 6- 3 thrashing, Schimichael was seriously ****ed off with Le Tiss for the chip and smashed up the changing room after the game. It seems that he was genuinely hacked off about it and so Paul Scholes spent the next month in training shouting "Le Tissier" as he treid to lob him and then would run off as Schimichael chased him around the training pitch. The Cat Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 Ferguson said he was a great player who always gave Man Utd problems and scored lots of goals against them. He went on to talk about the chip over Schmeichel which sent the keeper into such a rage of embarrassment that after the game he spent ages kicking everything in the dressing room. He also praised Matty for his skills, touch and loyalty. Said that Man Utd did consider signing him on more than one occasion and that Matty featured in their scouting book. Xavi filmed his piece with a (fairly lousy) translator in Glasgow while they were there playing Celtic a few weeks back. Ed Chamberlain said that Xavi was so determined to film the piece for one of his heroes that Barcelona broke the media embargo they had set at the time to allow him to do it. He mentioned that he grew up watching Matt's goals and was a huge fan, congratulated him on his career and signed a Barcelona shirt that Ed presented to Matt onstage. Going back to the chip against Man Utd , Ed Chamberlain passed on a story Gary Neville told him where he said that for a couple of weeks after the goal Schmeichel was still cross about it and Paul Scholes would wind him up in training by just randomly shouting "LE TISSIER" during practice matches. This would end up with him getting chased around the pitch by a grumpy Peter Schmeichel.

Wes Tender Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 Schmeichel's ire at Le Tiss chipping him probably had some basis of the circumstances surrounding it. Bearing in mind that he was reckoned by many to be the World's best Keeper, he had a torrid three games, starting with 5 goals he let in against Newcastle the week before, 6 against us and then two against Chelsea the following match. 13 goals in three matches before he steadied himself and reverted to his old self. The Cat Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 Another quick anecdote: A couple of years ago when it snowed Matty walked up to his local Co op in Baddersley to get some milk and bread. He was in the queue and noticed an old lady looking at him. She turned and said "I recognise you from somwhere" before pausing and saying "did you used to collect my bins?" Matty, not wanting to offend the woman, said "err, yes" at which point the old lady turned around to the checkout assistant and said "I thought so, but he doesn't half look like Matt Le Tissier." Matt said his chip was premeditated after he was Albert do it the week before. He didn't know Schmeichel was off his line when he had the shot, he just hoped he was. I was sure he said Saville too....I know the quote was from Tarbuck originally :-) Brilliant night as others have said - thought it was well compered, respectful but always with self-effacing humour and outright p*ss taking and the chance to see those goals on a cinema size screen was special too. The other comedian reference that I missed the name of was the one who quipped that Matt was the only PL player to put weight on during a game :-) All in all a great night - we who saw him throughout his career are privileged people, very privileged! Matthew Le Tissier Posted 10 October, 2013 Share Posted 10 October, 2013 Very disappointed in Lambert and Lallana who on very good authority were asked to do a video message and were told by the club they were not allowed to. Why on earth did they even have to ask!!! And why would they not tell the club to do one! They must have been pre warned that if invited or asked for something they should ask the clubs permission. Which they did and the rest is history Disappointed in the lack of backbone and also the childish behaviour of the club.

Neither played with him or have been at the club while Matt was involved...and Lallana grew up an Everton fan and Liverpool for Lambert. They could have added little more than a bit of back-slapping really. Anyway, cheers Matt for some fantastic years.

Gemmel Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Do they not get on? I don't think so. I met Merrington once at a reserve match, whilst he was socuting for another team and whilst they may well have made up, it seemed clear there was friction between them (I won't repeat what he said). I think it is worth remembering that we promoted Merrington and then sacked him at the end of the season. I don't think it was Saints finest hour (He would have still had a job if we hadn't encouraged him to the top seat) .
Noodles34 Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 I think it is more likely that DM didn't want to jeopardise his position as co commentator at SMS for the BBC, clearly NC can tell people they are not welcome at the stadium, even if they do not work for him. WokingSaint Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 Great that this tribute went so well. However, it is a disgrace that there was no official contribution from the Club. For all he has achieved, and it is immense, it is time for Cortese to recognise that SFC has a history, and at times a great one at that. Why can't he acknowledge that a lot of us are still there, not just for the excellent team and set up they we now have, but also because of memories of the past, particularly the Lawrie Mc and MLT periods. Lord Duckhunter Posted 11 October, 2013 Share Posted 11 October, 2013 I don't particularly want to get into a bunfight, but what was the reason behind this tribute? I know he was to most our greatest player, certainly in the top 3, but what triggered this particular night. I could understand it if he'd reached a milestone, maybe his 60th birthday, or 30 years since he signed. He's not died, is not ill to my knowledge, or is retiring from the club. Was it a charity venture or a commercial one. If it's a commercial one, then maybe this is the reason the club didn't want anyone involved in an official capacity. Is there going to be another one in 5,10,15 years time, maybe one for Lawrie or Franny? To me, his tribute was his testimonial , but I find this whole tribute thing a bit strange if it's just a random date. If it's a money making commercial venture, then good luck to them, but I can well understand some people not wanting to get involved if that's the case.
