third clean sheet in a row and only 2 conceded in the first 6 league games........must be some sort of record?

Yes we feel starved of goals, but you only need to score one more than the opposition, and today we scored two.

I always say I don't take a serious look at the table until after 6 games....but after today it really looked good.

Admittedly we haven't played many of the " big teams " yet (ex.Liverpool) but comtinue in this manner and it won't matter who we play.....

MOM ? .......is it going to be Lovren EVERY game ?.. he really looks commanding and must rate as the buy of the season for almost any of the Prem clubs.

Went down to Winch today to celebrate the launch of my mate's first novel. Not seen so many Saints fans in one place barring being at St. Mary's, so great the lads got a result.

Glad the lone Saints fan I met on the platform at Clapham with his young son, didn't have to share a train home with a bunch of jubilant Palace fans.

MOM for me today has to be Alpine.

Todays buzz work seems to be "Job Done" so I'll go with that ! Special mention to the Palace fans who were noisey throughout!

Good point I meant to add. Palace fans turned up in numbers and didn't get disspirited even after going 2-0 down.

Once you saw the Chamakh dive on MotD you could see what the referee had seen - a blatant attempt at cheating because he'd pushed the ball too far ahead and away from the goal. People who cheat in other sports are banned - Lee in snooker, Armstrong in cycling - so a red card in football would be a very mild punishment for cheating by comparison. Instead all players get is a the same as for a clumsy tackle - a yellow card warning. FIFA and the FA have got to stamp out cheating and as long as managers try to cover for the cheats it will go on. Contrast Moyes' reaction towards Young with Holloway's begrudging comment that he couldn't understand why Chamakh didn't try to have a shot instead of going down.

We've got 11 points from a possible 18, a great return, without playing our best football. Can't believe how lucky we are as fans to see our team 4th in the league. Nobody would have thought this was possible 5 years ago.

Agree totally with this still buzzing this morning. Saints have given us some wonderful moments the past few years.

I WOULD disagree about our best football yes we were pretty ineffective in front of goal 1st half BUT we still had 68% possession - more than double that of Palace. We may not be tearing teams apart (hopefully YET) but we are BLOODY effective.

What a change from some of the the hang on desperately, give the ball to MLT & hope days

Honestly, I hate how dull we are to watch now. This is not how I envisaged "success" at all. Boring, boring and more boring. I hope we start playing well soon. :(

Didn't mind the ball retention in the second half once we'd gone 2 up, that's exactly what it's for - but the first half was just draining.

Job done, won without playing that well really. Great to see Osvaldo get off the mark with a crisp finish and another one for Rickie. But after the 60th minute it was a bit turgid really - and Poch wasn't that happy with it. Wanyamas passing really isn't anywhere near PL standard, shocking really for a footballer playing at that level. And I wish Lallana would stop turning back out and slowing the play down, sometimes it's necessary but often it isn't. That should have been four or five really. Still, very happy with the win and delighted with progress.

A push in the back, shirt holding in the box, a bad tackle knowing you are the last man.... they are all forms of cheating, just as bad as a dive and they go unpunished all the time. This is just one example but fonte fouled Strurridge last week, not as last man but still cheating. Should be of been sent off and banned?

Interesting to see that it is Lovren leading the MOTM voting by quite someway on here. Wouldn't expect it to be a CB after a comfortable home win against Crystal Palace. Suggests none of our flair or attacking players are really in full flow yet.

Or suggests Lovren was solid, had a great game and we kept another clean sheet. Just a thought.

Three good, three bad.

Good:

Osvaldo's first goal means I can now call him the 'Divine Ponytail' without fear of contradiction.

Rickie's free kick a minute later was a thing of beauty.

I'm not sure I'd swap Dejan Lovern for any other centre half in the PL.

Bad:

We still haven't quite recaptured last season's attacking flair.

The away fans were superb today - pity they don't have a better team to support.

The chip shop made me wait ages for a fishcake!

The away fans were ok, reminded me of a lower league team visiting a Premier League team in the FA Cup on their big day out.

We never got out of second gear.

Agree, the only difference between this and the performance in the last two games was that we out scored the opposition. As you would expect, I see that as a positive!

The team spirit, epitomised by the way we defend as a unit is going to take us a long way, all we need is a spark in the final third, bring it on Gaston.

Completely agree with this, apart from that five minutes yesterday I have been bored silly at every home game so far.

Obviously 4th in the league is great, but I'm not really feeling that buzz yet. We just seem to be lacking ideas in the final third, one goal all season from open play all season. Hope it clicks soon as the talent is certainly there.

I think it's partly cultural too. We good honest Britishers like our sport straight down the line and get very upset about this sort of behaviour.

Take for example however South America where they see such actions as "clever" and all part of the game, no one is getting upset particularly about that. From Maradona, to today's Saurez and Neymar, being clever to achieve a win is celebrated. If as a youngster, you are taught and grow up with this view, my guess is its hard to change.

We say its cheating, they say it's simply being creative, I personally dont judge, its interpretation. FIFA owns the game worldwide, so is unlikely to change anything too fundamental beyond the standard Fairplay requests, just to please the us.

With two 'old' guys up front, we do lack pace; both had space in front of the back line yesterday, but let that ex skate catch them up (begrudgingly, I thought he was their MOM). When Rodriguez, JWP and Gaston came on, the speed difference was noticeable.....

I take your point about pace, but it's worth noting that Osvaldo is actually just under a year younger than Ronaldo, so I'm not sure his lack of a yard can be attributed to age just yet.

Started well - brave clearance from Ward on the line to deny Morgan but became too ponderous on the ball after that, especially Davis and Lallana. Second half was miles better and from 45-65 minutes we moved the ball far more quickly; poor old Palace didn't know what had hit them. Osvaldo got great power into that shot and looked delighted to get off the mark. As soon as he was brought down for the FK, you just looked at the angle and distance and knew Rickie would score and a great moment when he did for his 200th league goal. Should have scored another 2 or 3 as we got in behind Palace a number of times, a lull and then J Rod and JWP gave us fresh impetus, J Rod should have scored when Osvaldo put in him brilliantly but a heavy touch, he also put Davis in who lashed over. Wicked cross by JWP that hit the post - how did MOTD not show that?!

Great day out and some oohs and ahhs at some of the other final scores. Big roar in the Itchen concourse when Sky put the league table up!

Keeping feet firmly on the ground.

Reaching fourth under WGS was a turning point back then. Hopefully were more stable as a club now.

CRY we should beat.

Swansea this weekend will be a more interesting test for us. They will put our back 4 under a lot more pressure. Interesting!

Re the Chamakh dive, looking at the Palace fans message board is both encouraging and discouraging. See:-

http://www.holmesdale.net/page.php?id=106&tid=137933

Its encouraging to see many Palace fans being critical of blatant cheating and their support for post-match video checks to punish the cheats. Football fans, whichever team they support should want the game played by the rules otherwise they are being defrauded of their gate money.

But discouraging were the post-match comments by the manager and the player. Let's be quite clear, Chamakh had pushed the ball too far past Boruk and rather than try to get to it, he immediately went into a dive, with no contact at all,and then dragged his leg towards the keeper so that he made contact with Boruk. That was a deliberate foul by the striker, not by the keeper and it was simulation for which he was booked. Holloway was unhappy that his player dived instead of attempting a shot and called it 'going down too easily'; Weasle words if ever there were any. No concern from him the manager about cheating. The player was sure there had been contacxt. Well, there would be wouldn't there - if you deliberately run into another player. No admission by him that he cheated.

This shows that those who make money out of the game, the managers and the players are prepared to cheat because the result is all that matters, their income and career depend on results alone. Those who watch the game and fund it with their money don't want cheating, and in fact if you condone it you might as well dispense with rules altogether.

This leaves us with the administrators, FIFA, the FA and the Leagues, as they could do much to eliminate it by real punishments to those who cheat that hit them where it matters by long-term bans from the game. Lee in Snooker, Armstrong in cycling; if Ashley Young was banned for 12 months, or Chamakh, players would think twice about cheating.

First live match of the season, and chose a good place to sit (in the Chapel)! Told my mate they were saving the goals for us in the second half!

Wanyama was decent, but looks like he's going to pick up a lot of silly yellow cards by poor control and then diving into challenges to get it back. He VERY easily brushed off Palace players though, which was good to see, and something we've lacked in other years.

Lovren very classy again, and a massive improvement for the whole defence. Shaw was lively, and Clyne and Fonte did well against their old clubs. Thought Schneiderlin didnt really get that involved in the game but was decent enough. Lallana was decent, but I'd say that Davis didnt really impress - a few misplaced passes and poor shots - I wouldnt have him in the starting lineup for the next game. Lambert did ok, maybe should've drilled the shot in the first half rather than curl it, but the free kick was awesome.

MOTM for me was Osvaldo. Looked very classy, good skills and great strength (often winning the ball back off the defender when it looked like they had tackled him) and a great goal. Was very impressed and think he's a top quality addition.

Ramirez should've been brought on earlier instead of Ward-Prowse (who didnt really get into the game much).

Overall, very professional display and always comfortable.
