Just logged on to see the result and read the match thread . Great win to the lads . Interesting reading the match thread from the start . God there are some real moaners . Thank you Rickie and Pablo . Good to see you sent them scurrying back down their dark dingy holes

Wanyama may give the ball away but imo he covers every blade of grass and breaks up the opposition poession time after time, not always pretty but effective, bet Lovren and Fonte love him

To give the ball away you have to gain possession in the first place, too many expect perfection.

great win. ok 1st half, excellent 2nd half.

if anything, proves alpine is a total wind up.

At HT was all over this place going on. yet no where to be seen now

Don't know why everyone gets so wound up by Alpine. Everyone knows he is emotional, prone to over reaction and a natural pessimist about us!

He is a Saints fan and cares as much as any of us (in his own way). So give peace a chance and enjoy this rarified air!

because he is a clear WUM. if you cant see it, you are not fit to MOD

not once has he posted on the Post Match reaction thread, yet when we were not winning, he was all over this place looking for bites

Its no worse than half the guff I hear in the stands. The forum is about opinions, he's entitled to his - as you are to yours.

nothing is worse than the guff from the stands, does not stop you banning/infracting people for far less than being a BLATENT wind up. Are they not entitled to their (silly) opinions

you do realise lots of people pay to use this service.

turkish got an infraction for 'stamping on peoples dreams'....is that worse than 'guff from the stands'..?

Good match to come back to the Uk to watch

I thought the defence was magnificent cant remamber ever feeling so comfortable at the back during a live match! Wanyama is a beast if only he can improve his distribution and there is a lot more to come from Osvaldo once he settles in fully. We looked class and a proper premier team. when was the last time we only conceded 2 in 6 top level games must have been back in Strachans time if not even before.

Very pleased good test with Swansea next week

As the blokes sat behind us said in amongst the match long whittering: that's 25% of safety in the bag.

Under Adkins we seemed to let other teams run around getting excited for 20 minutes then we would just turn up the gas. This season we seem to have a pattern of almost warming up for the first 45 minutes, then come out of the traps in the second half. Picking a man of he match is very hard.

An easy day at the office. Pleasant weather too for the end of September.

Quite incredible that we are 4th in the league without even hitting top gear yet. Everything is good. Goals from both our forwards to boost confidence, clean sheet, all good performances, getting good reviews and on a different planet to our neighbours down the road!

I think it's a shame that the response from our fans is less than when we lose. Some expectations are just a bit silly.

I think we are now building on a very solid base. Lovren is the find of the season. Strong, assured, comfortable and a leader. Even the very best centre backs have dodgy moments but he recovers brilliantly. Fonte is the most improved player of the season. We have 2 excellent full backs. Wanyama may look unpolished at times but what a player to have in front of the defence!

All good.

When you think where we were this time last year...

I thought we were very professional today, whilst not being amazing. I think the most positive thing to come from today (apart from the 3 points obviously) are the 2 goals for our strikers, that will set them up nicely for the coming weeks. The longer a striker goes on without a goal, the more it plays on his mind and the more they try to do whilst deviating from their natural game, hopefully we'll see more free and confident performances from Rickie and Osvaldo here on here, let the goals flow....

Palace huffed and puffed, but are your typical relegation fodder team. We could have had more goals if we wanted as they were particularly poor at the start of the 2nd half and they completely crumbled in front of our eyes.

Great points tally, great goal stats and a great position in the league table. We've put ourselves in a position to seriously kick on now.

Interesting people say we have not played as well as we can, i believe we have changed the way we play to be solid at the back and that we may not see flowing football as much this season unless we score early and draw the other team out at Hom

You can see the Pochettino influence now, dour and tighter all round, get used to it boys and girls, not the gung ho of Adkins, great fun that it was. Should have scored more, could see SRL was a bit desperate to score, but to keep PL opposition to NO Shots OT is amazing really, without breaking sweat almost.

Bring on Swansea!! COYRS!!

Wanyama was so good today. And what can you say about Lovren and Fonte? Classy partnership.

Still not quite there going forward but not going to complain after 3 straight clean sheets at the other end!

Missed the pub today but was a good match to get back to and see live for my first of the season. Better than last seasons home Wigan for sure!

Last time we were fourth in the league was after the win against Portsmouth in December 2003. It all went a bit down hill in the second half of that season during which WGS left.

We are definitely much stronger now than we were then.

Today was the first time I've seen what he is about. Sunderland West Ham were SO negative there was nothing for him to do, but he was impressive today. Palace were poor, but a good day at the office all round.

Three good, three bad.

Good:

Osvaldo's first goal means I can now call him the 'Divine Ponytail' without fear of contradiction.

Rickie's free kick a minute later was a thing of beauty.

I'm not sure I'd swap Dejan Lovern for any other centre half in the PL.

Bad:

We still haven't quite recaptured last season's attacking flair.

The away fans were superb today - pity they don't have a better team to support.

The chip shop made me wait ages for a fishcake!

Our attacking flair like 12 months ago has gone a bit in a trade for the best defence in the country. And we are 4th. I think us being more solid is a fixture rather than not clicking

If we had the attacking flair of last season and this seasons defensive display. We would probably win the league

Agreed, I can literally only think of Barca the last few years, Chelsea 05/06 and Arsenals Undefeated team that had complete solidity and an unreal attack.

Great result,we were never in any danger, they were no threat at all and the stats show it,clean sheet and both strikers scoring is the best part though....couldn't ask for more.

Anything other than a win today and I would've been bitterly disappointed and the same for next week.

Rickie appears quite happy:

Impressive interview. Is it me or do SRL's interviews sound similar in tone and indeed sentiment to the value of the team as my other great modern day sporting hero, Mark Cavendish?

Might just be the accent, but agree with this. There's a humility in there that you don't always see, and you never used to be able to say that about Cav.

We won't, so don't get hung up on that. We are now a solid outfit, which will provide us with a hell of a lot more success than attacking teams for 90mins.

Oh I'm greedy - I want us to be rock solid defensibly and attack like Real Madrid on steroids. I'll grant you this may not be an entirely reasonable ambition :)

Back home and content. A good, but not great performance, built on a solid defence, hard working midfield and hoping we can make one or two chances creatively. I missed Osvaldo's goal (just got a text from my Dad mentioning the fire that closed one of Heathrow's runways, which was dangerously close to my house) but Lambert's free kick was exquisite. Pleased for both though, that'll do their confidence the world of good. I think a few too many touches went astray, which better teams could punish us for, and while I accept we build from the back, quite a few passes in midfield that could have gone to attacking players ended up back with the defence or Boruc, because I still think we lack that creative maestro, but who can really pick fault today...

I thought Davis was a cracking choice, and had a good game, and would have got MOTM but Lovren edged it. He was outstanding, and fair play to Fonte, who was also very comfortable.

Pleased to see Saints win, and happy with 4th in the League. Contented.

Too gain the ball back you must have lost possession. Sums up a lot of the 2nd half for both teams.

The review from talksport that this was as one sided as it could get and saints 'declared' with 25 mins to go

Touché lol I will point to the fact that we have had 4clean sheets in a row, therefore defensive screen must be doing something right
