Olallana Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 Most seasons has there defining moments/games IMO. Last year it was West Brom away followed by a good performance against Swansea leading up to the win at QPR. The game against West Brom was lost but I think you could see the team starting to gel defensively in that game and followed by the next two games the performance level raised.... So the question is, are we already at some defining games this season with Palace and Swansea at home the next two? I think so and I think many of us want at least 4 points from these games to be happy and really see the possibility for the team to be a top half team in the table. If we get 6 points we are really in it, if we get three or fewer there´s always some if´s and but´s but I would feel a bit disappointed. Win against Palace but lose against Swansea would mean that we might not be good enough for the top teams (despite winning at Anfield), the other way around and I would feel we keep struggling against lower teams that park the bus.... The games coming up will probably be completely different games so it will show where we are and where we can end up if we find ways to win these games now. eurosaint Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 I will be disappointed with less than 4 points from the upcoming two matches but don't really consider them to be 'defining' moments ! It's a long old season and the key matches will normally be towards the latter part when we have more of an idea of realistic targets !
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 (edited) Kinda agree with eurosaint. For a team that is going to be midtable/tophalf the 6th & 7th games of the season aren't likely to be 'defining'. EDIT: Haven't really explained myself. Yeah, we should be beating Palace at home. No matter what our seasons ambitions are, avoiding relegation, midtable, europe, title push etc. That is one you look at as being 3 points. No disrespect to Palace, not saying it will be a case of simply turning up, that's just how it is. Anything less is a bad result in my opinion, but also isn't the end of the world. Teams have bad games, and sometimes lose points. Despite the outpouring of bile and general wailing that goes on on here after a bad result, they do happen fairly regularly, to all teams (look at Liverpool last week - yes we played well, but it is a bad result for them). It's a set back, but with 30+ games still to play at the end of this game it is still far from over. Swansea, well again, if we are wanting top half, it is probably one we should be winning. That said, Swansea are a good team, so I'm not going to go into meltdown over a loss or draw if that happens. Still, at close of play, there will 31 league games left to play - 93 points. So whatever the result - it will not have defined our season. Edited 27 September, 2013 by KelvinsRightGlove
Deano6 Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 If there is such a thing as "season-defining", then it is not likely to be these next 2 games, no. There is always a tendency to over-inflate the importance of the present time (count how many games will be "must-win", "6 pointer", "crucial", "can't afford to lose"). FWIW for me the season-defining games last yr was the victories against Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea in short succession, possibly the Reading win directly after to keep the momentum going too. Although the season petered out from there it essentially cemented our survival, and was the difference to our season - both for points gained and performances in those games. That was the moment most people expected Adkins to get the bullet so not sure there was anything positive that was taken from that game. I went to the swansea game and that was a typical home game against a "lesser" team. Lacked creativity and conviction. Anyway to your point, 6 points are surely expected and needed given November is our hardest month on paper. Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal I believe. Gemmel Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 FFS didn't we learn anything from Nige? One game at a time boys and actually don't really see any season defining games at all this season. We aren't going down and we aren't getting into Europe (Excluding League cup) as to what position we finish (Anywhere between 16th and 10th in my opinion) wont throw up any "Season" defining games. DuncanRG Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 Unless you're at the top of the table and everything hinges on the head-to-head games with your direct rivals, I don't think you can call season-defining games in advance.

Turkish Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 Anyone that thinks two games define a season is an idiot. We beat Man City and Chelsea last season yet lost against QPR and Wigan. If people had labeled any of those 4 season defining games we'd either have been relegated or won the title. No surprise coming from someone that claims shots at goal rather than actually bloody well scoring and winning is the benchmark of a good performance though. CB Fry Posted 27 September, 2013 Share Posted 27 September, 2013 If we don't do well in the next two games it basically rules out any chance whatsoever of us winning four games in a row in, say, February or April. Or going eight matches unbeaten in November to the New Year. Would be a shame but there you go.

dubai_phil Posted 28 September, 2013 Share Posted 28 September, 2013 Think the Football world will look back on our game at Man Ure as being THE definitive Season Defining Game....... After we win 4-0 and plunge Moyes into a nightmare
