Jeff Stelling: "Southampton are a beacon as far as the British game is concerned"

The prime example of this, by the way, is Southampton who really are a beacon as far as the British game is concerned.Yes, they've signed some big-name foreign players, but in this week's Capital One Cup game against Bristol City every single outfield substitute was British - and that was even with giving Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne the night off!

It's a club with a huge British backbone - and I'm sure Roy Hodgson wished that every club was like them!

I've a lot of respect for Southampton and their fans, who were understandably upset when Nigel Adkins went last season but didn't protest at the next home league game, against Everton, because they wanted to give Mauricio Pochettino a chance.

Pochettino carried himself with a lot of dignity at that time and it has worked out well for Saints, while things aren't so bad for Adkins now, either! Southampton do things slightly differently but they are making huge strides; we saw as much at Liverpool last week, when a lot was made of the fact that they press so high up.

I don't think that they've been at their best so far this season, despite the fact that they are up there, until last week when they were absolutely terrific.

They've got a decent sized squad now and my only concern for them is that as good an addition is Pablo Osvaldo appears, his arrival has changed Lambert's role slightly and maybe he's not quite so comfortable with it.

But we'll see how that pans out - for now they are doing great.

Is this the same Jeff Stelling who joined MLT in ridiculing Nicola Cortese over the Adkins sacking just 9 months ago?

well, well..what a change of heart - now that our club has suddenly created bit of patriotic pride with the media.....

I haven't heard any signs of regret from him for that outburst.....I hope that the club bans him from entry to SMS, at least until he goes public with an apology...

If I remember correctly he had a go about the manner of the sacking which he had a point about. You just sound a bit pathetic tbh.

Yes and to be fair a hell of a lot of us on here did the same.

Nice little article that, well done Jeff :-)

Just goes to show that a hell of a lot of peeps can be wrong when left to speculate with very little info....The funniest thing about the Adkins saga was after a while, when peeps started to realize that it was for the best for the Club. The hate and bile changed from 'Adkins being sacked' to a face saving...."The way he was sacked"

Observing a herd mentality can be really entertaining at times

Not at all. The majority were annoyed about the sacking but very angry about the manner of it. It was posted many times but rewrite history if you wish.

Not sure id agree to be honest. I think pretty much all Saints fans would agree that it's a bit of a disgrace the way he was sacked, but majority all said they'd give MP a chance. I just think people would expecting us to progress a bit further since he took over (not that he's done a bad job!)

What exactly did Stelling say about the Adkins sacking? Can't remember it being anything that bad?

Exactly. As jeff himself said, the Saints fans didn't protest at the game after Adkins was sacked as they wanted to give Pochettino a chance. St. George has had a bit of a misguided swipe at how it all panned out. The decision itself was always much less questioned than the timing and manner in which it happened.

Yeah that was a shockingly ignorant outburst. Anyway peace seems to have broken out especially with MLTs comments.

Exactly. Regardless of us moving up a level in terms of playing style and playing staff, how Adkins was treated still sticks in my craw.

Lets not take everything which is said on Soccer Saturday to seriously shall we? Its all for show on that program and good fun to watch, irrespective of your views on what they say. On a serious note, this write up seems an honest thought out opinion, which gives us something else to be proud of at the moment (shame our support cant be a little bit louder with some new songs for players who deserve it).

So nothing to do with Adkins. Probably him just being honest and giving his valid opinion a matter, same as this article, funny how they're taken in such different ways on here though.

If a journalist (particularly one that works in the Murdoch empire) has an opinion they ain't gonna tell you what it is, they're paid to increase the ratings.

Maybe this one?

and I would still stand by Stellings comments on this. NC's opinion on MLT is disgraceful. However good it is for us now, your cant forget past legends. I also agree with him about the way Adkins left.

But this article praising us is about our team and selection policy. Different subject altogether.

Oh god, have you see the saints fan comment on this article on sky... snubbing stellins praise and telling everyone about how we are destined for top 3.... I find it frankly embarrassing. We should be gateful for whatever praise we get, and modest about our successes. Most importantly we need to stop dismissing other clubs who people deem to be "smaller" than us. as people were doing to bristol city pre match.... how quickly they forget that as recently as 3 years ago The Robins were above us in league standing and quality and we were the league 1 or stuggling championship team.... we knocked out a fair few bigger scalps and as we frequently show, if we don't turn up we can easily lose games. We're not so good hat we can go banging the war drum and acting like we are Barcelona... reality check needed for some fans!

Agree about the 3rd place stuff but I think fans have the right to expect a win at home against a 56 places below us. Doesn't mean that fans are acting like we are Barcelona.

Nice to see Stelling praising Southampton for the way that we champion young British talent, but a bit of a shame that he can't quite bring himself to credit Cortese for that instead of Pochettino. I can understand that the reason is that he can't praise Cortese because it would seem a slight towards his mate Matt, but any praise in our direction from him is to be welcomed.

I don't think that there were many Saints fans who were not a bit miffed at the way that the Adkins episode was handled and in my opinion, the results at the end of last season and the beginning of this mean that any fans who hold the position that the jury is still out on Pochettino have a reasonable viewpoint at the moment.

It would be nice to have media attention which was more even-handed about the events of the past few recent years, but it is understandable that personal loyalties and their attendant agendas will naturally mean that impartial objectivity is difficult to achieve. If Cortese is the bad guy for his stance that Club legends are expected to pay for their tickets and the way that Adkins was dismissed, then equally he should receive praise for the success that I hope we achieve under Pochettino, the way that we bring on our youngsters through the academy and our aim of playing a style of football which we aspire to be called "the Southampton way"

I wasn't happy as I liked Nigel. That said I could also understand why MP was/is an upgrade.

NA wouldn't have 'attracted' any of the players we signed this season.

Sent from my RM-821_eu_euro1_276 using Board Express

Why wouldn't Adkins have attracted the players that we have under Pochettino? What particularly would have attracted the Kenyan at Celtic or the Croat at Lyons to the Argentian who was previously managing in Spain? Ramirez came under Adkins. Excuse my naivety but I had thought that money was the primary consideration that attracted players.

Which is an absolute contradiction of what you'd said before about players coming here because it's near the sea and the new forest, decent schools and a nice place to live. You also said that our own talented youngsters will ignore Man United and Chelsea and the £100k a week salaries to stay at saints and play with their mates. Consistent as ever Les.
