Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/10699552.Kevin_Phillips__I_shouldn_t_have_celebrated_my_winner_at_St_Mary_s/?ref=mr Kevin Phillips trying to make amends again. Will probably be his last game at SMS and I, for one, always appreciated his effort whilst here. Should we let bygones be bygones and give him a warm send off? If we can do it for Michael Owen surely we can do it for someone who played for us?
Sheaf Saint Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 In all honesty, the negativity that was directed towards him over the comments he made when he left us was pretty embarrassing. I didn't feel there was anything wrong in what he said as he was just being honest, but some fans are clearly over-sensitive about it. He was a good player for us IMO. I hope he gets a good reception this weekend in recognition of that.
Saint Mikey Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 In all honesty, the negativity that was directed towards him over the comments he made when he left us was pretty embarrassing. I didn't feel there was anything wrong in what he said as he was just being honest, but some fans are clearly over-sensitive about it. He was a good player for us IMO. I hope he gets a good reception this weekend in recognition of that. I agree, he scored some cracking goals for us - Leicester on his debut, Utd and City away. A couple of quotes where taken well out of context when he left and some fans have been on his back ever since. The hatred generated towards him puzzles me really...
notnowcato Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 For all the "advice" he's received from sections of our fans I don't blame SKP at all for his reaction. Top pro.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 I don't get all this no celebration of goals. I just about get it if you're a legend, maybe if Rickie returned, but journeymen like Phillips who was just a player passing through. He's rewriting history here, he couldn't wait to get away. Let's give him plenty of clog and he should stop being a soft **** and rub our noses in it if he scores.
Ulrich van Gobbel Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 I will certainly give him a good reception if he comes on...as will I'm sure my Sunderland supporting mate who is coming to the game!
Isla Wight Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 Phillips has been a great pro and to still be playing in the premier league is a fantastic achievement . I loved watching him when he was a Saints player - always thought we had a chance of a goal with him in the side. I for one will give him a great reception.
warsash saint Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 Still palying in the Prem at 40 is some achievement!
Lazlo78 Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 It seems that most have put it behind them when we discussed it last time: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?46118-Kevin-Phillips-talking-about-Saints-his-time-here-and-what-he-thinks-now

As someone else said, we will unlikely see him again at SMS

The9 Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 It seems that most have put it behind them when we discussed it last time: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?46118-Kevin-Phillips-talking-about-Saints-his-time-here-and-what-he-thinks-now Thankfully. Unfortunately there will still be some spuds who boo him because they had no idea why anyone else was doing so in the first place.
The9 Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 For all the "advice" he's received from sections of our fans I don't blame SKP at all for his reaction. Top pro. Which reaction ?
Lazlo78 Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 Yes but a good opportunity to orchestrate a decent send off. As someone else said, we will unlikely see him again at SMS I agree - I just wanted to point towards the old thread to show that there is extensive support for the first few comments in this thread. I too hope SuperKev gets a good reception at SMS
Fan The Flames Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 The reaction by some fans was completely Brightonesque. I don't think he should apologise for celebrating, this non celebration thing has gone too far. He came, he scored, he went. Whilst the wife's phone seller scored, came and went.
niceandfriendly Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 Gave me some wonderful memories with some memorable goals. Don't boo him.
Batman Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 good luck to him. very brighton-esque the way some of our lot go on about him (negatively)
Sour Mash Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 SOme of the songs sung at him are a bit pathetic, equally no real need to cheer him either.
Batman Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 SOme of the songs sung at him are a bit pathetic, equally no real need to cheer him either. innit just another ex player who (IMO) did alright with us.
Dellman Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 He was with us in our declining years when everyone under performed and we had crap managers, 'arry even left him on the bench as relegation approached so I'm not surprised if he has bad memories of those years, so do I.
orchardsaint Posted 26 September, 2013 Posted 26 September, 2013 i liked him and it wouldn't bother me if he celebrated scoring, i also would welcome him scoring, if we win, obviously. even when someone like beattie, who was with us longer, scored more goals, and generally did more for us, found it difficult not to celebrate when he came back and scored.
sammysaint Posted 27 September, 2013 Posted 27 September, 2013 I liked his work ethic and goals he scored for us, and to be fair he scored our only goal in uefa cup as well for god knows how many years. Hope we dont boo him.
simo Posted 27 September, 2013 Posted 27 September, 2013 He said his piece and therfore caused a reaction and we said ours , imo I'll take this as an apology and give him a fairly decent reception
Golden Balls Posted 27 September, 2013 Posted 27 September, 2013 I'm embarrassed by those who are embarrassed by other supporters. Personally, he might get a clap from me if he comes on. Depends on my mood. Won't boo though.
Saint_clark Posted 27 September, 2013 Posted 27 September, 2013 good luck to him. very brighton-esque the way some of our lot go on about him (negatively) No-one really goes on about him do they, just comment whenever he comes back to play against us.
bender Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 So what exactly were his comments when he left for Villa? I remember the OS had an article saying that he left for Villa with a parting swipe. They also went on to mention that after the relegation defeat to Manure he quickly ran off down the tunnel without even clapping the fans or saying goodbye. But why would he regret celebrating that goal for Brum against us? When he came on as a sub that day, the second he appeared on the touchline, the Northam were singing "stand up if youve sh agged his wife" His first touch was to lay it off to the wing, his second was to score.

He doesn't, he's probably just a bit two-faced. I think the comments he made were nothing more than "Southampton never felt like the right move, but it had to be done" or some such. Maybe we were the only choice and he didn't want to play in the Championship.
OldNick Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 Did Phillips play at all? If so what reception did he get
farawaysaint Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 Did Phillips play at all? If so what reception did he get 20 minutes? Don't think he touched the ball and the usual chants happened of course.
Stud mark of doom Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 I thought he got quite a warm round of applause when he came on.
Whitey Grandad Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 20 minutes? Don't think he touched the ball and the usual chants happened of course. One good pass out to their left winger.
Roger Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 Bunch of numpties in northam singing horrid chants. I clapped him.
Pedro Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 A few boos and chants but most gave him a good reception. CP are a very poor team and he didn't get in the game much.
Bucks Saint Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 I thought he got quite a warm round of applause when he came on. Very mixed in Kingsland - about 1/3 each of applause, silence and repeated boos from the muppets
aintforever Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 Mixed in the Northam too, some sang 'stand up if you ****ged his wife', some sang 'JasonPuncheon, he sh!ts on your wife'.
Lighthouse Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 "Jason Puncheon, he sh*ts on your wife!" I had to laugh but we've set the bar at a new low with that one.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 28 September, 2013 Posted 28 September, 2013 "Jason Puncheon, he sh*ts on your wife!" I had to laugh but we've set the bar at a new low with that one. That's got to be one of the most stupid chants to be heard at SMS in a long time, despite the competition.
bender Posted 29 September, 2013 Posted 29 September, 2013 Basically the whole ground clapped him. There were a few songs of 'stand up if you .............' by a few in the side stand next to the away fans and a few in the Northam. All in all thats the best reception weve given him since he's come back.
eelpie Posted 29 September, 2013 Posted 29 September, 2013 He clapped Saints fans as he came off and the crowd applauded him. Probably the last time he will play on our turf and a fitting finale, even though he hardly touched the ball during this game. Let's remember the goals he scored for us.
Appy Posted 29 September, 2013 Posted 29 September, 2013 Scored a winning goal against the Skates, so i'll always have a soft spot for him, the chants in the Northam were so cringeworthy.
