When did Steve Davis last let us down?

Competition for midfield places is tough at the moment but was trying to think when Steve Davis played poorly and couldn't.

Admittedly I didn't see the Bristol C game and he hasn't had too much game time but do think he was a shrewder signing than first appeared.

Agreed. A very effective player, full of energy and covers the ground box to box (was the only player up with Shaw for the triple save moment at Anfield). Tough for him being left out at the moment

Despite N.I. low FIFA placing they still play against good /v.good teams in international competitions, and he gets that experience to learn from.

Steve D. is N.I. captain and played over 60 times for them....no one has suggested that he is a top player, but rarely has he had an "indifferent " game for Saints, even if we don't win.

I think it's hard on him not to have a regular spot in the side, even though he didn't cost £12 million, but given the choice I'd pick him ahead of " several other " candidates.

Tough one as he is a very good player and keeps things ticking over, plus is an important part of our pressing game, however if you need someone to unlock a defence he's not going to do that. I like him, but they'll be times where we need a bit more than just shirt passing.

Very tidy player and usually has an impact when he comes on too, which is a great attribute.

Doesn't score or directly assist enough to be played as a no 10 instead of a striker but an excellent player.

Early on last season he went missing for large parts of games when played in a deeper position but very tidy further forwards and helps us with the high press in particular.

Probably not clinical enough to be the main player in the hole but a great option in a midfield 5 or 3.

It's unfortunate that both our top-scorers this season play in same position. Ponch is got difficult decision! Ramires or Davies, goals or goals! Or leave them both out again for southampton nil.

A solid option off the bench, especially when we have a slender lead and we need someone to steady things when the opposing team look like scoring soon.

However, I do not see him in our starting line up unfortunately IMO

Echo some of the comments; when he first arrived he wasn't all that but IMO he's got better and better in his time here. And I think he definitely has a starting role to play, particularly in away games where we need to keep it tight and control the midfield. He's probably not the best option as a starter for home games, but a great option to have. My MOTM for the Rumbelows Cup game the other night too, he was excellent in posession and showed a bit more of his creative side.

I think he's a top top player who even with faint praise from many, is seriously under rated.......I don't think its any coincedence that the times we most look like scoring are when Steve Davis is on the field.....I suspect we'll be seeing alot more of him over the coming games....At least i hope we will.

Against teams that pass from the back I think we play better with him in the team, would like to see him have a run of games though. TBH I'd also like Gaston to have a run of games at 10 as well. Spoilt for choices, top-half of the table problem....

He is a bit of a MkII Richard Chaplow, very busy on the pitch without a twist of headless chicken, willing to have a shot on goal, has a more mature intelligent head for the game. Absolute bargain at £750k very nice gesture payment to Rangers as they were gurgling down the drain.

Great player for us. Doesn't get mentioned enough when it comes to bringing players into the side. Ramirez is always mentioned, as is Cork, but Davis is Mr consistent, and will do the job asked of him no problem. Last week in his 20 mins at Anfield, he was superb.

Wasn't great today! Looked a bit lost on the right/left. Doesn't suit his game at all. Good player to have in ACM against bigger clubs though

But didn't let us down. Was always available when required and gave an option. Just a couple of times things didn't quite work out. Should have scored today though.

This. Played it backwards instantly a bit too often first half, got better 2nd, but playing out wide is not his best position for sure.

He did a good job today, just not an exciting 'heroic' job that makes fans excited. He covered a lot - when Wanyama was out of position he covered him, a few minutes later he did the same for Lallana, then he's straight back in the middle. His passing was simple and effective, his defending did a job. Nothing outstanding and a few passes went astray, but it's harsh to be too critical of him, we would have been caught out a few times if it weren't for him (well, as caught out as was likely against such a weak team).

Thought he was harshly booked today which might have affected his game a little. He wasn't as effective as he was at Anfield last week but he still put in a decent shift.

Pulling back by grabbing a shirt. Or shorts.

Yes, he's a good, solid pro, an important of the squad.
