Palace Build Up Thread

Unchanged team for me and a great opportunty for a first home win of the new campaign.

Palace won't park the bus and will try to attack us which suits our pressing.

Fancy Osvaldo to score his first.

Saints 3-1 win.

Osvaldo, Lallana and Fonte with the goals.

Yep don't change a winning side unless you have to,

I've never understood why people think you shouldn't change a winning team. So if Barcelona won a game vs Getafe and Messi was suspended for it, following through your logic you wouldn't then put Messi back in the side for the next game vs Real Mardrid because it would be "changing a winning side"?

I'd like to see Ramirez start this game ahead of JRod. He needs game time and we need a bit more creativity in the side to break down defences. I also don't like the idea of three strikers.

Can't see Ramirez doing a job as a wide player. Will he track back to cover Clyne/Shaw's runs? If he's to play it can only be instead of Lambert or Osvaldo, based on our current set up. Think he still has a lot to prove before he gets a nod.

Who has been suspended from the Saints starting 11?

IMHO, Imperative we get 2 wins from the next 2 (winnable) home games before the international break. 6 points from them will be fabulous for morale and set us up nicely for a trip to OT with Manure below us in the league.

I didn't say anyone was, just using that example to point out a flaw in the blanket statement that you shouldn't change a winning team.

I'll make it using a Saints example instead, if Luke Shaw didn't play vs Swansea at St Mary's next week and we won, would you want Danny Fox to play at Old Trafford the following week even if Shaw was available and fit to play?

No Cork? Not even on the bench?

The same thought occurred to me after I posted it. You can probably swap Cork for Reed but I guess my subconscious thinking was that Reed (from the little I've seen/heard) gives us a more 'dynamic' midfield option off the bench than Cork, coupled with the fact that its "only" Crystal Palace (yes, I know...arrogant and complacent...guilty as charged!), so it should in theory be a good game to blood one or two of the new youngsters.

Cork will be a shoe-in if/when Wanyama or Schneiderlin get injured or suspended, but when he's not making the starting 11 I don't think he automatically warrants a place on the bench as he's not really an impact player which is what you want on the bench (predominantly).

Turkish to the match build up thread please. Too many people are leaving Lambert out of their starting line-up.

It's a tough one, but I just think we're a better side with 1 up top and 3 in behind, and we're going to need that creativity in the midfield to break them down on Saturday. Rickie will probably play though,

I think J Rod will lose out to Gaston

Possibly, but if that were the case then surely Gastón would have been subbed last night? I'm sure the intention was for him to play a full 90 minutes but in the end he came off before the end due to injury/tiredness/boredom any of which would mean a place on the bench at best.

Holloway's teams seem to always cause us problems. Can remember Blackpool always making it tricky for us.

This is a golden chance for us to pick up our 1st home win in the prem for what feels like ages.

The West Ham & Sunderland games have been really frustrating - Hopefully the result is much like the Villa result at St Mary's last season which was a real launching pad for our season.

Such as when we were a little League 1 side and dumped mighty Premier League Blackpool out of the cup.

Holloway wasn't too impressed with chants coming out of St Mary's that day (to be fair he did make nine or so changes)

Fair point... I was thinking of the home game where Bart one of the shakiest games ever & the miserable televised game up at their place.

We drew two and lost four of the 6 games after that.

on paper we really should be winning this game, at home and against newly promoted opposition. but then again, we only seem to step up and perform against the big teams and struggle to find the motivation to beat teams we should be beating. i would go for the same team that played pool and a conservative 1-0 win with osvaldo's first goal for us.

You are assuming i agree with the statement about not changing a winning team. Don't assume MLG. You of all the pedants on this forum should know not fall below that basic standard.

So now we're completely ditching the 2 best CMs and midfield partnership we've had in years! Goodbye Morgan, farewell Jack.

Amazing. Hopefully we'll respect Palace a bit more and show some common sense. 'Never change a winning team' is a ridiculous line, just waiting until you lose basically. Play your strongest team for the fixture at hand. In this case, it probably will be the same as Liverpool with everyone well rested.

Again though, the result will come down to their nerve and whether they get an early goal. If Palace can keep a clean sheet until half time I don't think we'll win, it'll be back to snatching at chances and heads dropping. Would take a scrappy 1-0 win as they desperately need some belief in the home games.

Don't think there's any chance of this after last week, the players will be (should be!) on cloud 9 after last week, they will have loved the feeling of winning at L'pool and will have loved looking at the league table all week, and they will want more of it.

There's competition for places too and they will all want to play when we are doing well.

Same team, 2-0 Osvaldo and Lambert (pen).

Boruc

Clyne Fonte Lovren Shaw

Wanyama Schneiderlin

Osvaldo Lallana JRod

Lambert

Subs: Davis, Chambers, JWP, Cork, Ramirez, Davis, (Lee, Rowe, Reed or Guly)

For a game like this, I'd take the risk of not having a centre half on the bench and go with an extra attacking option. Should one of Fonte or Lovren get injured, Cork or Wanyama could fill-in.

Calm down dear. Ditching is a bit dramatic. My formation and selection is for the Palace game only. I don't think we need 2 DM's for this game and I think Victor is the unit to play in front of the 2 CB's.

Amazed how many people are making 2 or 3 changes to the lineup. Pretty clear why all 11 starters from Saturday were rested last night....

Because they played Saturday and we were up against League 1 oppo in a competition that would be good to progress in but not the end of the world if we exited from it.

Anything less than 3 points will take some of the gloss off of last weeks performance for me. Yes I know that football logic rarely works, but if we can do Liverpool at Anfield then Palace at home is a routine win - surely. Would love to see 3 or 4 home goals with both SRL and Osvaldo both scoring from open play. A good rout and clean sheet please.

On the basis that we have only won 3 out of the 10 Premier League games at home under MP, the last one being nearly 6 months ago, I am delighted to see such optimism on here.

Not suggesting that it is a must win game but it is really time for that home record to improve.

If I were picking who I "like"' I'd play cork instead of Wanyama, because I think he was doing a better job in that position, and I'd play Ramirez instead of JRod, because he gets more goals and assists per game and we need goals.

However, I'm a big fan of letting the same players stick together as long as things are going well, so I'd play the same team again.

So many big names that people will squeeze them in any possible way.Davis, Ramirez, Osvaldo do not play on the right wing, J Rod will play there. Its one of Gaston/Davis and one of rickie/osvaldo. The way I see it is that palace cannot be underestimated. They lack quality but possess fight. If osvaldo and Ramirez play there is only pressure on their back 4 from our wingers as they both stroll out of possession.

It also seems wanyama will never be dropped for cork so id go:

Boruc

Clyne fonte lovren Shaw

Schneiderlin VW

J rod Davis Lallana

Osvaldo

Davis yoshida chambers cork JWP Ramirez Lambert

Don't see the point in changing a thing, just because Gaston scored last night doesn't push him into the first team for me - as apart from that, he was his usual absolutely frustrating self.

I think Morgan and Wanyama need time to bed in together and I think against Liverpool they had their best game as a partnership.

Lambert and Osvaldo is worth persevering with, but if there was one to drop out it would be Lambert on current form.

But there's no need to change anything at the moment (unless we have an injury). We look a real cohesive unit.

Same team as Liverpool.

Not because you "don't change a winning team", just think we are about ready to click with those players and someone is due a thumping soon.

Ah, not the ''someone is due a thumping'' line. ;)

I lost count of how many times I heard that at the start of our championship relegation season. I think the script was mis-read though, as we were the ones getting the thumping's in the end!

I don't think we'll give anyone a thumping this year, most likely lots of 2-1's and 1-0's.

1-0 Puncheon to score

ohh

But Ossie rescues us with a second half hat trick!

Puncheon won't be able to play against us in either game this season, which is probably a good thing! We've got tickets for this one so will up and on the A30/A35/A31 nice and early from Devon. Can't wait as well.

Doesn't sound like anyone really made a strong case to dislodge the current first XI last night so same as Anfield for me. J Rod and Lambert need goals and form, not worried about Osvaldo as he's looked lively and has got into the right positions without scoring, once he nets one he'll get a few under his belt. Got a feeling he will score on Saturday and it should be quite a celebration. Would imagine Fonte and Clyne will get a good reception from the Palace fans. Anyone know how many we've sold for this one so far?
