Gaston

Come on then, how did he get on? I know he splits opinions massively on here, but interesting to hear how he got on. Dave Merrington seemed impressed on Solent and the goal sounded a cracker.

Also interesting tweet from our pal Alex Crook...

@alex_crook: #saintsfc assistant boss Jesus Perez has told us Gaston Ramirez is having extra training sessions to improve match sharpness

Would be great to see him in behind Osvaldo and Rickie on Saturday.

Yes did ok. Good goal and two or three other decent attempts in first half. Early on played a couple balls to left hand corner. Clearly someone should have been moving into that space but weren't doing their job. As a result Gaston got a bit of stick - unjustly in my view.

Gaston Ramirez is class and was head and shoulders above the rest.....

So glad he is in our team...

Top player.

Were you actually at the game? Honest question.

IMO he had two sublime moments. One, the goal, absolutely thumped it home, a great finish. Another one in the first half where he lofted the ball over the defence for Lee, who really should have scored.

Other than that, Gaston was massively frustrating. Poor control far too often, very poor passes far too often, not able to hold on to the ball, and far far too wasteful for a team that prides itself on keeping posession. Steven Davis was much more effective as a midfielder looking to pull the strings that Ramirez was.

One thing I won't criticise though was his level of effort. i thought he kept going, and kept trying right up to the point where he walked off injured with seconds to go. It just really didn't work out for him. Extremely sloppy is the best way that I would describe his performance, punctuated by a couple of instances of absolute brilliance.

Apart from that he was generally pants all night

Thought their left footer Emannuel-Thomas looked more of a threat at times

Shame really because Gaston looked the real deal on a couple of occasions last season, particularly first half at home to Everton

Similar to a lot Le Tiss' performances. Should be a special player for us : )

Pretty much spot on IMO.

Great goal and some beautiful touches mixed in with some frustrating moments.

He provided the 3 best moments of the match. The goal, a gorgeous chipped pass over the top of their defence and thumping shot which went just wide in the first half. Second half he was coasting, then wandered off the pitch injured when they announced the added time.

I wish he'd put more effort into tackling. He seems to lose every 50/50 and often just makes a token gesture.

A very accurate summary of Gaston. He either lost possession or gave the ball away so many times. we were counting at one stage first half and eight of ten times he had possession he lost it!

A good goal yes and a nice through ball for Lee but really other than that he was quite quite poor...

A little bit sad IMO that you're watching a player who is capable of goals like he scored tonight and you're sat counting the number of times he lost the ball.

Do many people actually enjoy football anymore?

Ramirez on form as Saints go marching on at St Mary's

Playing with style and swagger, Ramirez came close twice more in the first half and continued to prove a handful after the restart.

Exactly that, sums up my thoughts. Took his goal tonight brilliantly, but otherwise pretty poor, gave the ball away throughout the first half and did very little in the second half. That Emannuel Thomas caused us problems all night, if they could take their chances we'd have been in a lot of trouble.

I wasn't counting, but it must have been a lot. Let's see if MP actually plays him much over the coming weeks.

Your the sad one mate. You only ever come on here to criticise posters and don't have comments to make on the games or the team - that's what football forums are for you know - football opinions not your miserable psyco analysis of posters...

Just for your information I love football but that doesn't stop me watching a game for good things and those that in my opinion could be different. Try watching a game more thoroughly yourself and then we can hear your opinion and call you sad ...... Otherwise use a forum that has nothing to do with football and leave people to discuss football matters in peace and keep your cheap personal vindictive opinions on posters to yourself.

He should be in over jayrod its a no brainer.

Gaston is capable of brilliance jay rod is not

The number of times i watch jay rod and he snatches a lame shot or loses control of the ball is unbelievable yet for some reason gaston cops all the flack.its total bs in my opinion.

Don't see how you can rate gastons performances as greater than j rods since they arrived. Just isn't the case.

It is a shame only 8,539 fans saw Southampton’s first home win since March as Gaston Ramirez’s opener on 15 minutes was worth the £18 ticket price alone.

The forward has not started in the league this season and had a point to prove to boss Mauricio Pochettino.

He did just that when James Ward-Prowse headed the ball over to him on the edge of the box and the Uruguayan volleyed home. It is unlikely there will be a sweeter struck shot than that all season.

Assistant manager Jesus Perez said: ‘It was a great goal, but the more important thing for him was to play 90 minutes. He joined pre-season after playing in the Confederations Cup and the breaks with the national team don’t help. He’s putting in extra training to get fit.’

He scores goals from open play. We need that in the first team (or has nobody else noticed?)

He clearly needs to get Saints fit. He'll be fine.

I warned about this when we were tracking him and everyone was getting excited. I watch a lot of Italian football and when I was visiting my friend in Bologna I went to see Bologna v Bari. Ramirez was awful, gave the ball away 32 times, didn't tackle and ducked out of 12 50/50s, missed an open goal and a penalty and got substituted after 50 minutes. He looked disinterested and didn't run around a lot so knew it wouldn't be long before the fans here said he was sh*t. Of course I was told I was trolling and being a WUM. WTFILN?

You're scraping the barrell using the daily fail.

Lying, vile, racist scum paper.

Couldn't agree more about the Mail.

But at 22 & £12m Ramirez someone must have thought he has both talent and potential. Shouldn't he be allowed space to develop & be given the benefit of the doubt for a little longer? Of course a point must come when you have to say 'its not working' & have a parting of the ways, but is now that time?

The more I read in all Gaston threads the more certain I get that many fans on here dont understand the concept of a flair player.

After all years with the Pruttons, Telfers and Delaps their eyes and brain are used to a certain brand of football....

Ah, almost Olallana! I see you're going for the much adopted put down of compartmentalising "Gaston bashers" into the supposed mindset of only rating footballers who run around a lot.

The truth is that Saints fans will have a better grasp than most of the virtues and downfalls of a flair player. One of the greatest flair players of all time kept us in this division for years surrounded by a bunch of workmanlike artisans. We all know how lazy MLT was, and how he was prone to be sometimes wasteful. We already have a brilliant benchmark for a flair player; so this entire logic of yours is a bit flawed in this instance I'm afraid.

In fact, the concept of a flair player in the modern game is also pretty much adequately defined in Adam Lallana. A player who rightly attracted some criticism for being too wasteful and non-productive but who seems to have really stepped up his game this season and is looking creative and productive all at the same time.

Did you watch the game last night, by the way? If so, I'd be genuinely interested to hear from those with an alternative viewpoint as to why Gaston's performance should guarantee him a place on Saturday? Personally I don't think it did, as the brilliant things he did were too overshadowed by the regularity of bad things he did (which against a better opposition could have been exploited much more).
