Bristol City match and reaction thread

Strange game, strange experience. Was sitting in the Itchen just under the new clock staring at my seat in the empty Kingsland. Spent the first ten minutes having to stand up to let all the late arrivals get to their seats. No crowd atmosphere at all. Great goal by Gastón, totally out of character with the rest of the game. We were dominating midfield in the first half with no real end product. The second half started much the same but on 60 minutes Bristol upped a gear and started winning all the loose balls. If they had better finishing they might have had a couple of goals but for some good goalkeeping from Kelvin. Shame about his kicking though. Once Jos got the second the game was over as a contest, just enough time for Harewood to slash wildly from the edge of the area and Kelvin to save with his left leg as he dived to his right. Clean sheet, comfortable win in the end but not your authentic football experience.

Hmm....Merrington seems impressed with him tonight...

Well just back from the game......

We were pretty average and Bristol City could well have nicked a couple of goals second half. Feel the result papers over a few cracks.

Ok it was our second string but one or two have aspirations to be first choice in the first team.

Gaston for me was poor. Watch him closely he gives away possession or gets caught in possession continuously and just doesn't perform like a 12m player should. Nowhere near a first team place at the moment.

Fox - never been a fan but tonight was half decent though still insists on allowing his man to put a cross in without engaging him. Why?

Has Guly had his last chance tonight? Almost feel for him but tonight he was truly well off the pace and just looks - to be blunt not good enough. Surely it's time to say enough is enough for him.

Lee looked pretty good and had some pace and but for a very good save could have scored. Considering his lack of game time he looked sharp and showed he offers a different dimension. More game time could see him as an impact sub for the first team.

Chambers had a good game and could well make it as we have seen this year.

JWP a good game as did Davies but this brings me to MP who I thought allowed the midfield to drop far too deep second half inviting them on to us for quite a period. This symptom happens often to us. From what i have seen, when we have the ball we have too many players rushing too far forward leaving us short in midfield. When we don't have the ball we drop very deep at times inviting attacks and forget to press. This happened lots in the second half and could have cost us dearly. Indeed the midfield were far too close to the back four tonight quite a lot of the time when we were not in possession giving City lots of room to pass it around in our half and create danger.

The result suggests an easy win but City had some decent chances and could have easily knocked one or two in...

right I was at the game tonight . we did look under a bit of pressure for part of the second half but you felt there was another gear if necessary. Gastons goal was absolute class but he is so frustrating, giving the ball away when there are simple options on.

Tadanari Lee was okay but seemed to playing as a target man and that is definitely not his best position and again gave the ball away cheaply to often.

I am not one to slate players but Guly really did have a mare , his first touch was poor and when he got a shooting chance in the second half it was, frankly ,pathetic.

I am not saying these players will never do a job for Saints ,but tonight they were not up to scratch.

On the other hand, in Harry Reed, looks like we may have unearthed another gem.

Davies 6 shot stopping brilliant distribution poor.

Chambers 7 Tidy and occasionally dangerous on the overlap.

jos 7 he was just Jos.

Yoshida 7 Ready for the first team

Fox 6 competent display

Cork 7 Won the important midfield battles. Had a pile driver well saved.Another who will be ready when needed.

Davies 7 Worked hard always available to receive the ball.

JWP 7 Big future for this bloke.

Gaston 6 great strike for first goal, otherwise would be 5

Guly 4 Poor bloke nothing went right for him.

Lee 5 Some nice moments but didnt see the runs of the ball that showed before dropping out of favour.

Subs: J-Rod 7 Would have been a more comfortable win if he had started.

Harry Reed 7 Little bundle of energy with a good turn of pace.Reminds me of a young Alan Ball.

Rowe wasnt really on long enough to have any impact.

There was one Saints player on the pitch tonight who for my money stood out...as a complete waste of space...GULY! I would score that performance at 2/10 - it was that diabolical. He didn't look as if he cared less...little or no effort, he swanned around aimlessly for large periods of the game. I rarely call for a player to be subbed, but I was fuming that he was not taken off earlier. Seriously, that guy is SO far from making the 1st team and the little young ginger lad (Reid?) was head and shoulders better. Great goal by Gaston 'The Enigma' Ramirez - I thought he put in a good shift, but needs to get more consistent. Maya put in a faultless performance - great reading of the game as usual. JWP and Davis were excellent. Chung looked very good indeed and will not have done himself any disservice by that performance tonight. Likewise I was actually impressed with Fox's performance too - he looked quite composed on the ball.

I thought Davis made a couple of very good saves and had a pretty decent night all round. Lee looked lively first 20mins or so, but actually did very little and really faded as the game went on. Also thought Fox had a decent game. Guly was poor and I normally try and cut him some slack. Chambers and S. Davis our best players, Reed looked very good again when he came on.

The second half was very poor though, everyone around us getting frustrated, I thought Bristol City played very well considering their position in the league and would have knocked us out if they were remotely competent at finishing their chances.

Thanks for saving me the trouble. I logged on this morning to say that virtually word for word.

Seems that we were lucky to win that, as they had at least 6 clear chances to score from telling balls across the goal that only required their strikers to be a second quicker, or to have 1" longer legs. It reminds me of the occasional game that we had in the lower divisions where we were all over a team but failed to put away a number of chances, so BC must be feeling a bit miffed that they aren't into the next round. If we come across more accomplished opposition in the next round, we would get hammered playing like that, so I hope we play a few more of our higher calibre players. However, it was good that we were able to give some more of our youngsters a bit of a run out and they at least looked promising.

I wouldn't say we were lucky, it was a fair result. We also had some very good chances but a goal for Bristol City at 1-0 would have made things very sticky. We still had J-Rod and Adam on the bench.

its not really too much point looking st the team performance but more at the individual performances.

last nights side whilst having a smattering of premier league players is ultimately a championship side. if that was our starting 11 in the championship promotion season we would still be there.

these games are purely about fitness of one or two possible starters and game time for players that may be needed as injury cover, of course blooding the kids is important too.

However if we are serious about winning this competition as a route into europe we will need to start our fisrt team 11 starting in the next round.

i think the ricing is incorrectly priced but it doesnt help attendances with these types of starting 11

I might be the only one, but I thought Guly did OK last night. I was more frustrated that in general Saints' movement (particularly after about 35 minutes) was practically non-existent, so when Guly or JWP received the ball nobody showed for it. I can think of a few occasions when Guly was just stuck there begging for someone to pass to and eventually getting crowded out of possession, which made him look worse than he was. He did make an absolute ricketts of that shot though. JWP was very visibly getting frustrated at a lack of options before the introduction of Reed and Rodriguez.

Not sure why, on about 35 minutes, all the energy went out of the team; we stopped pressing, we got forward slowly and allowed them onto us. Maybe it was a lack of match fitness from a largely second XI? But City had plenty of opportunites to make us pay, several balls across the box that just needed a touch. Reed and J-Rod changed the dynamic and used their pace to put the play back in their half.

Thought Lee had a very decent first half, nice touches, good hold-up play, tidy work to set up the 1st goal, showed good pace and directness. Obviously knackered not long into the second half though. Davis (S) was the best player on the pitch, doing the simple things well as usual and all night. Cork was class early on but started uncharacteristically giving the ball away later on. Ramirez was occasionally brilliant, more often sloppy. Defence were generally solid (Yoshida gave the ball away horribly quite early on, leading to Jos getting booked). Fox was the only player who consistently showed for a pass to build the play, and was too often left with only the pass back to Davis for his troubles. Davis (K) made some very fine and important saves, and kicked a lot of passes into the stands.

Last night had the tempo of a training game. The first goal very nearly killed the game off. We were playing a very conservative 4-5-1 masquerading as the standard 4-2-3-1. Except for a twenty minute period in the second half when BC raised the tempo and got the ball forward quickly the pace was slow. A couple of good saves by Davis and the ball hitting his legs with him diving early the wrong way plus a series of low crosses across the goal could well have seen us out. Overall Davis was pretty poor, his command of the box was non existent, caught a couple of easy crosses but looked on edge whilst his kicking was dire. If Gazzaniga isn't the answer neither is Davis. If Boruc is injured we need a goalkeeper PDQ. The back four were ok however Fox drops off to the edge of the penalty area too far away to pick up the threat out wide. He also gets out of position which draws Jos out of the middle, a problem when they play together. Davis and Cork didn't really get hold of the midfield and I thought Davis was staying fit. No commitment there. Guly was hopeless and I don't think we get much out of JWP as a wide player. Lee in his first game for a year at least, worked hard but is not a lone striker and lacked service and support. Ramirez scored a brilliant volley but seemed to me to be totally uncomfortable having to play facing his own goal. He looked really good when facing play and was really accurate with his passing especially out on the right of midfield in a spell in the second half. This was his first 90 mins in ages and he suffered from cramp in the last five minute, going off with a couple of minutes left. He has the ability and we need to find a place for him but I don't see room for both him and Lallana. In the short term I can see Lambert and Osvaldo in the middle and two from three, Lallana, Rodriguez and Ramirez filling the flank positions.

I think a few players had their last chance tonight. Did they do enough ?

If that's the case then for me Guly really should be on his way going on his 'performance' last night. I thought he was absolute dross. I'm not one for knocking any player for SFC but last night when he was on the pitch we might as well of been playing with 10 men. Offered nothing going forward and nothing defending. I actually felt sorry for Fox as he ended up defending the whole of our left.

Probably thought - and rightly so - that he'd be getting a bit more of a chance this season after doing so well on the pre-season tour.

It was a Capital One Cup tie and Saints had 11 on the field who had never started a match together. It was an attempt by the coaching staff, as said by Wild Saint, to give a number of people 90 minutes. You could see that Jack Cork struggled after 45 and was barely visible in the 2nd half when our midfield was overrun; but he got his 90 minutes and will be better for it. In the 2nd half, Bristol could easily have won it.

Yoshida showed his class, Gaston's stunning volley could hardly be bettered, Jos was Jos, it didn't run for Guly, JWP will mature into a fine player.

MP won't have the same side out for the next round unless it's a "no hoper" away to Liverpool; oh!
