Top end Southampton restaurants

Not being from Southampton myself I was wondering which restuarants in the area are considered the best.

I was recently in Terravina, Netley Marsh and thought it absolutely amazing but it wasn`t massively busy on a Friday night despite being so close to such a big city.

Just wondered what other culinary delights Soton has to offer?

Not a lot at that end of the market. There is Limewood House in Lyndhurst and the Pig in brockenhurst. Mirrabelles in Nomansland is good.

There are a lot of mid range restaurants which you can get good food, however for a "Terravina" type experience, its pretty slim pickings.

im off to casa brasillia in a few weeks?

any good?

I went to the one in the O2 and it was brilliant. Pretty basic, in that its BBQ'd meat that gets brought round to the table and carved off; but there was a huge variety and it was cooked really well. There was also a massive "salad" bar but which had fish and other side dishes. All in all great value.

My visit to the So'ton branch left a lot to be desired though. Overcooked meat, little variety, and not much at the salad bar either.

Been to the one in Glasgow several times and its very good, pretty much echo what Krackers says. The glazed pork coated in Parmesan is superb. Don't go mad on the stews and potatoes at the salad bar and pace yourself and its money well spent.

Limewood and the Pig are still hit and miss (sounds harsh)

http://www.lesmirabelles.co.uk/ is a good bet

http://www.themillatgordleton.co.uk/ Good (you can see my chairs there)

http://www.hotelterravina.co.uk/

Not sure what Oxfords is like not been for a while

There are some good places in town, try the therockstone.co.uk also (sounds crazy but great food)

Pretty much as above. Not much in Southampton at all. Anything good is in the surrounding areas. The pig is great but I'd go to winchester instead and try The Black Rat or the chesil rectory. Both are excellent but the black rat the better.

Chanteclerc at cadnam is decent. Restaurant on one side and bistro on the other, but same food from the same kitchen. The bistro is much more relaxed and better value.

 My mate supplies all the booze to them and chose the wine menu for them. I shall be sure to give him your feedback!

4. Hidden Falls Zinfandel Rosé £3.35 £4.75 £9.55 £13.95

California USA

An aromatic and flavoursome win, brimful with

strawberries and cream flavours and a juicy finish

Like I said, Strawberry syrup. Probably suits their clientele though, bit of a shock to those more accustomed to Faugères,Provence and Ardeche Rosés.

This place also has 1 of the best selections of wine in Hants and an award winning sommelier. I could spend a lot of time in their wine storage place thing which is on 1 side of the restaurant.

Southampton as I have said is a cultural backwater, for food the KFC by the civic centre and Zorbas up Bedford Place are the places to go or always used to be 20 years ago, I presume nothing has changed.

The civic leaders should have invested the millions that have rolled in over the years from pleasure cruising into the City so to make it interesting and a good place to visit not pass through, at least they retained the New Forest 10 miles away for the footballers............................

Unfortunately I have to agree with you about Soton being somewhat of a cultural backwater, although I like living here.

However I would be interested to learn how Civic leaders would get their hands on the money that is 'rolling in' from the cruise business.

Soton council puts no money (or effort) into the cruise business nor does it receive any direct benefit.

The cruise business has been built up by private enterprise/investment and the returns benefit a number of commercial entities.

I think the only direct benefit to the Council is possibly through business rates

They have never invested so people actually stop there, Liverpool will **** it and I hate to say that if it came to what City should be visited, they actually invest in their City, for everything to do in Southampton for a visitor I could name five in Liverpool, thats the point I am making, we take it as a prize that people come through our City when we should be questioning why they dont stay and spend money, in fact local businesses should be asking that to the council.

We would get port tax and that would go to the local council, what have they spent it on over the years? Nothing and people say we have a nice Forest and the like, what about the City, its as crap now as when I lived there 15 years ago.

Might get busier now as it was named in the Sunday Times best 100 hotels in Britain at the weekend.

I was there not so long ago and thought it average and won't be going back again in a hurry, at least not at the prices they charge. Maybe that is a little harsh as the food was OK but nothing special and if anything, a little bland. And for an establishment that sells itself as a wine lover's place, you might expect it to offer something that is good value rather than a large list (admittedly very well put together) but with the usual huge restaurant mark-ups.

Maybe I am fussy because the last time I went to the Mill at Gordleton it was absolutely horrendous. However, driving past it on a regular basis, I have recently thought that I should try again.

Escargot in Soho used to be great for that (maybe still is, haven't been there for ages) even when they had Michelin stars. They had about 300 wines ranging from about £12.50 to over £1,000 side by side on the list, with a similar approach for the food. You could pay little or a fortune for a meal in the same restaurant and everything was presented to an equally high standard. Some of the slightly pretentious restaurants could learn from that.

Having lived in london for a while now you come to realise what a cultural black hole southampton really is, and food wise it's no different. The "high end" places in southampton are not even close to being that, they're over priced; crass; with no subtlety to the food. Unfortunately though that does - to a large extent - sum up southampton, as well as many other provincial cities, which lets be honest is a long way from being the most sophisticated city in the world.

It's a shame really since the city is still my home town and holds a special place in my heart but i really can't ever see myself living there again. The night life is limited, the cultural life next to non-existent, the shopping mass market and poor and the architecture ugly and badly planned.

There's nice parks, good people and saints though. Plus it's still home.

Utter ********.

Hartnett Holder & Co at Limewood is very good. Terravina not far behind. Wine selection and service at the latter is internationally renowned and Gerard Basset, the proprietor, was World Sommelier of the Year recently. Luke Holder and Angela Hartnett at the former are serving up interesting and excellent food with national publications giving it very good press.

Nothing top end in the town centre at all though.

But they aren't in Southampton though ... ??

It makes me laugh when people say "where is nice to eat in Southampton" and someone answers with Limewood.

Personally I don't get the fuss anymore with top end places - I'd far rather sit in a nice Italian or really good pub with nice very well cooked food and a nice, relaxed atmosphere with well cooked, good quality meat. And somewhere I can get nice wine.

I like South Western House for that reason (and it's IN Southampton) - nice atmosphere, good food, good wine - not over the top. As nice as Limewood is, I'm not sure I'd rush back - last ate there last Christmas day - was good, but not as relaxing as I'd hoped.

I do prefer the TerraVina to Limewood - little more relaxed.

Jesus!! "having live in London for a while" "cultural black hole Southampton is" I have lived in many different places, and can honestly say I love living here best. High end food... really!! Going out should not be about showing off the money you can spend, but getting some good grub, and a nice pint :)

http://www.verveine.co.uk/ exceptional, experimental

Black rat , Winchester ... Interesting menu,

Keats Ampfield , Itialian home cooking. Excellent

I like Ranchos. Carnivores delight. Never had room for a pud!

I wasn't impressed by the Chessil rectory. Portions were very hit and miss. Two of our group well fed, two needed a sandwich when they got home!

Same applies for langstone house at Sparsholt. The roast is HUGE. The fish.. About one fish finger! And a bundle of asparagus....

For a good low cost meal New Forest Hotel at Ashurst is trying hard.
