Us and them, a serious question?

We beat, some say embarrassed the top team away yesterday and went 5th. Our local rivals on the other hand lose at home to a team I and many others have never heard of. They now sit only 15 places above Salisbury in the Conference.

Was yesterday the biggest gap between us or have we been much further apart in the past?

You'd probably have to go back to the late 1970's/1980 for the last time we were so far apart in league positions. At the time we were in Division 1 signing KK, European Footballer of the Year, beating Real Madrid and other big name clubs for his signature, skates were signing Les Briley or someone from Orient (probably lauding that as a statement of intent!).

Form is temporary, class is permanent. We've always had the class, and apart from a temporary blip, our form has been better for the best part of 50 years, so no real surprise :)

The whole Saints /Pompey rivalry was pretty low key until both sides met up in 1960/1 (ie for the first time since the late 1920's) when Saints were promoted from the old Div 3 and Pompey relegated from Div 1.

Until then quite a few Saints fans used to watch Div1 football at Fratton Park when Saints were away.

Pompey were without question top dog in the region for over 30 years.

However in the 54 seasons since 1960/1, Saints have been the dominant team for 47 years and, in fact, will have recorded a higher attendance in 51 of these seasons (assuming we don't fall below Pompey's average crowd this year!!)

This is quite a damning statistic, as far as the Pompey massif are concerned, as until 2001/2, Fratton Park had a higher capacity then the dear old Dell.

The whole bad feeling situation really goes back to the 60's and for the vast majority of current Pompey fans, they have had to face the fact that Saints have been dominant in every aspect of the game apart from the seven seasons from 2004/5 to 20010/11, and even during this time our crowds were higher than theirs in all bar one season

There are some great comments on here about them

Presumably Spartan is a Skate 'in peace' but when he posts about the return match :- "See you in March probably a few beers in the Mount on the Friday Night or the Bourne Arms in Knott End" he can f()ck right off - I couldn't tolerate a skate in the Bourne, it's only a mile, and upwind, from my house. :uhoh:
