The Boruc Save

9-3

yes ...maybe, but it looked pretty impressive when you saw a replay from camera behind the goal ....and considering who had taken the freekick in the first place .....

Yep, because it was Gerard and not that very average pele chap, it means the save was much better ...

My save for The Wheatsheaf against Weeke Estate in the Winchester Sunday League at North Walls Park in 1973 knocks all of the above into a cocked hat.

I would hold up my save in football practice at South Wonston County Primary School, 1978, from a fierce curving drive by Mr Durrell, against your effort.

It was a good save, but not even close to Banks.

Exactly, a good save but not in the world class league by any means. For me the comparison is closer to the free kick at Arsenal last season that KD got nowhere near. Yesterday, Boruc positioned himself well, and made the leap at the right time as you'd hope a premiership quality gk would, whereas KD wrong place and too late.

It'll take something special to beat Niemi's 'over the top' save at St Mary's a few years back...

Is this his triple save v Arsenal ?

Honourable mention for Paul Jones at Old Trafford some years ago, when he seem to retrieve the ball from behind him at low leve.

Funny how the angle you have really affects your perception of the save. From where I was in the stand I thought the ball was going right in the top corner, and that Boruc had just managed to touch around the post.

I was a doubter when he arrived, glad that he has proven to be a really good signing so far.

Boruc was our most important player last season IMO, without him we may well have gone down.

The guy had to wait a bizarre amount of time to get in but it's no coincidence that when he did we finally started to stiffen up at the back.

Top keeper and a really good signing.

He was top notch all through the game. Completely dominated the area.

We had a very big wall and Boruc was way to the left of the goal, saved it well although if it had been more in the top corner he'd had been struggling from his starting position, still I guess that was the point of the big wall, to make the top right corner inaccessible. Very impressive performance from him though, totally dominant in his area.

Agreed. Not enough recognition of this.

2 excellent saves, but also caught everything, made 100% the right decision everytime. Must give the back 4 huge confidence.

Even his kicking was ok

As good as it was, as others have picked up, had it been a better placed free kick, I'm not sure he would've got there... look at Baines or Rooney's goals this weekend... Hart even got his hand to Rooney's even though it was right in the top corner... had Gerrard placed his better, I don't think Boruc would even have touched it.

A very good save, but his position may have left him struggling for anything closer to the corner.

That said, he did indeed dominate his area the whole game and he has been excellent overall.

Agreed...... but the one against west brom was

I am surprised more wasn't made of that save as it was almost an exact copy of Banks save, the ball was 99.9999% going in and somehow Boruc got a hand to it.

Blayneys was very good, I thought it was Smith with the double save against Arsenal, and my Favourite from Niemi was on his debut when Charlton had a free kick and Jensen (I think) was on hot form for them from a dead ball, he let rip and the ball was going for the very top left corner like a missile and Niemi switched on his jet boots and flew like Superman to tip it round.

No we cleared it, they crossed it back in, he scored, he was offside for that.

Coincidentally enough almost exactly what happened for the best save I've ever seen live (without the offside), also at Old Trafford by Paul Jones, diving back towards the goal-line and somehow clawing the ball out wide - before it was crossed back in for them to score anyway.

The Boruc save on Saturday was very good, but not sure why he was so far over to begin with and the ball was nowhere near the corner.

We have been spoilt over the years.

The 'over the top' Niemi save I was referring to was vs Villa, and is at 3:25 on this compilation:

Takes some beating IMO...

Great link, had to turn the sound down though. Urgh, that music!

That game at Villa is by streets the best goalkeeping performance I've ever seen live. He pulled out save after ridiculous save in that match. In my eyes Boruc still has some way to go to be seen as Niemi's equal for Saints although there's no denying he has pulled off some cracking saves so far.

Also the best save I've ever seen. Watching the reply he was still on the floor from the first save when Sheringham (?) shot from about 3 yards yet he still managed to spread himself. Shame they scored 5 seconds later.
