Been working so just got home to share my thoughts. The main one being BOOOOO YEAH!!!!

I said it before and I will say it again though, if you have a watertight defence you are 90% of the way there, even if you aren't scoring. You pick up a lot more points with 0-0 bore draws and scrappy 1-0 wins from a set pieces than we did last season, when we could come away from a game with 0 points having scored 3 beautiful goals.

My Liverpool supporting mate (we all know one) is surprisingly silent this evening. Think his phone must be broken. :)

Yep, we do. Mine was lightning quick to text me after the game to say he thought we deserved it. There was quite a delay on the stream I was watching and I got the text before the ref blew for full time!

Amazing result, absolutely buzzing with that one. Fairly even 1st half but we were much the better side 2nd.

Really worked tactically pressing them very high when ball with their back 4.

Our back 5 was immense again, SRL off the boil still.

Banana skin next weekend, must get that 1st home win and goals from open play. I think we played Liverpool at a great time, they were shocking and poor from Rodgers tactically. Thought they would be much better.

Predicted 2-0 them, always sweet to win against the big guns when you don't expect it, sweet as they come!

Managed to find a stream with no commentary. It sounded like SMS. Completely drowned the home fans out before and after the goal as far as I can remember (it was past midnight for me and I'd had a few sherberts so might not be totally true). Final third is a concern. Just read RL had gone off the boil, I thought the kettle was turned off mid season 12/13. Ossie will come good for sure, no doubt and it's time to rethink AL's role. He's simply not delivering.

Great result, but I still don't like the fact that we don't have any decent service to the forwards. So far Osvaldo looks like a colossal waste of money, but with better service he might yet come good?

I think I can see what you are getting at, although I think Osvaldo has shown enough even without 'any decent service' to show that he is not 'a colossal waste of money'

I'm intrigued to learn that Danni Osvaldo is apparently a "colossal waste of money" because I had thought there were times last Sunday when he looked 'different class' to everyone else on the pitch. Indeed, far from him not being good enough for us, I thought the reverse of that situation was closer to the truth.

I'll be surprised if this lad doesn't score us 15 goals this season.

Fair play to Southampton.

The ugly truth is they were better, much better. Not only that, Brendan got out managed as he did at the Dell last season.

We had no answer to their high press without taking into account the woeful decision to play four center halves or the decision to push Sturridge wide to accommodate the inadequate looking Aspas.

The midfield of Gerrard and Lucas was for most of the game nothing more than a liability and oh for a Wanyama.

For those that slate Glen well now you can see how intrinsic he is to how we play.

Hopefully a bad day at the office as the team and staff were as clueless as they come today.

What rubbish.

I thought Wanyama was their worst player by a distance. If Cork had started in place of him, they might have dominated us by more. He's awful on the ball and his teammates were reluctant to pass to him.

What do mean no decent service. There have been loads in the last couple of games

Ossie looks mint if you ask me

Agreed, I think he looked absolute class last week - and if anything his vision was beyond what most of our players could cope with. They will get used to him though - and he them. His touch is absolutely first class.

My only worry was whether he'd be a bit of a prima-doña and might impact team spirit, but his work-rate, and the way he reacted to the goal yesterday despelled that. Am genuinely excited about what he'll do once he's got his first goal out of the way.

Good to see him encouraging Luke Shaw at one point and even helping Tourė who pulled up with cramp.

If anything, think he's actually eager to please.

Sometimes adding great players to teams can disrupt the shape and make the team worse, though, which is what I think people are saying. I don't agree, but there it is.

I am agnostic on Lambert and Osvaldo together. The front four clearly aren't clicking as an attacking threat at the minute (although the pressing!), but MoPo clearly thinks it will work. Haven't seen enough of Osvaldo to see if he could play one of the the three in a 4-2-3-1. I like the rotating, though, anyway. Personally, I think we need to play Ramirez. He is a great player who hasn't become **** just by sitting on our bench too long. If we are going to stick with the current system, drop Rodriguez and play Lallana (who looked excellent yesterday) right, Ramirez left, but have them rotating as now.

To be honest, the last time the attack (and indeed the whole formation) felt really balanced was in that run of games under Adkins when we played Lallana, Puncheon left and right, Lambert up top, and Ramirez at 10 (as in the 4-1 against Villa).

Anyway, great result! Play Osvaldo on Tuesday and let him fill his boots (if that is not too complacent).

It isn't Osvaldo's touches that have been the issue it is his shooting. I am just looking foward to them working together as a unit better and him to get a few go in. It must be bothering all of them that they can't get it in. The player I am most impressed by is Steve Davis he always does a good job of defending behind the front player in a way Gaston won't but still links things up. The amount we ended up paying rangers was an absolute steal. He will never have Gaston touch but Gaston hasn't learnt what to do with it yet.

Agree pound for pound Davis, Clyne and Lambert have arguably been our most successful signings.

Good god. Osvaldo was generally excellent yesterday.

I was surprised to see that L'pool had 55% possession. it felt as if we had a lot more of the ball at times.

At no time did I feel that we were under the cosh, and after a period of possession 2nd half, a few choruses of We are Southampton and we're taking the p!ss had me lolling!!

We've done the easy part - now to beat Palace at SMS!!

Doesn't look good for Ramirez when Davis, JWP and Cork all came from the bench before him.

May have been different if we were chasing the game. Ramirez isn't someone you bring on if you need to press, track back, be solid and careful in possession.

Yes I was surprised to see that. It was a bit backs to the wall for 10-15 minutes after the goal but the last 15 were comfortable, kept the ball well and played some good stuff. Thought we defended superbly yesterday, Liverpool ran out of ideas and of steam at the end and apart from the usual 'this is saints, we're bound to mess it up' worries, we never looked In any sort of trouble.

Am gutted to not be there to see us win and get the 3 points at Liverpool and fair play

to the fans who were there to see it too as well as the fans who got up in the Liverpool

end when we scored too lol!!!

Going by MOTD it showed that it looked like we were good and that they just had an off

day and was good to see Fowler & Co praise us too as well and am hoping that we can

now go on and spank Palace and hopefully beat Swansea too as well so will see what

happens!!! :D

COYR!!! :D

LOL ... that goes without saying, even if we were 3 up with 3 mins to go!!

Not that you'd have known from The MOTD highlights, but we had more shots both on 12 / 10, and off target 7 / 5 and both had 6 corners.

MAN OF THE MATCH......? depends who you read.

Saints' fans overwhelmingly voted Lovren MOM, and few would deny that, but having read through some online journos reports of Saints' performance at Anfield, they have differieng opinions ;

Lovren YES, but others named Boruc, and another Lallana.

On any other day Boruc might have got the vote for his blinding save of Gerrard's free-kick, which was (if not in the Banks class) is (surely) one of the best you'll see this season.

(A view of the crowd behind the goal shows the upraised arms of hundreds of L'pool fans screaming " goal "- before you see Boruc's outstretched hand pushing the ball away).

.....and Adam Lallana had his share of praise and was voted MOM by another newspaper, whilst Clyne got himself a good mention in another report.

Were we all watching the same game, you might wonder? YES, but it's a real credit to all those players who were outstanding enough to warrant the attention and get their name in print.

If say lovren was best with clybe second, boruc, shaw and Fonte next.

Which serves to illustrate the oft-made point - that to establish a successful team, you need to start by building an effective defence.

Looks like Saints are doing just that?

Can anyone summarise what was said on MOTD - was out and missed it, interested to hear what the pudts said about ou performance

Was mainly Robbie Fowler talking about us, mainly filling time with drivel. Said there were no real standout performances but we were solid and workmanlike, pressed from the front, went with a gameplan and stuck to it. They all agreed that we were well worth the 3 points and deserved to win.

If Lovren, Boruc, Clyne and Lallana's performances didn't stand out, then he probably didn't see anything other than the brief highlights they showed on us MOTD.

Watched the Sky extended highlights back last night and Osvaldo did appear to give the ball away too easily on a number of occasions and put us back under pressure, but you can definitley see his quality when he has the ball at his feet around the opposition box.

Thought Lallana was excellent, his best game for us for a while

Would like to see more of S. Davis in games, particularly away from home.

Our back 5 look outstanding at the moment.

We were lucky with the Sturridge penalty shout and Rodgers' very strange team selection.

Perhaps he needs better service.
