Absolutely cracking performance and result. Special mentions have to go to the back 5, in particular Boruc and Lovren (signing of the season for overall influence).

I think people are being overly critical on Wanyama, he was much better today and will need some time to adjust. If people insist on criticising anyone I would say a more likely target should be JayRod, our weakest link yet again.

The biggest thing I took from the game was how much more mobile and attacking we became once Lambert was replaced by Davis. I think Lambo could do with being taken out of the limelight a little bit as he looks to be carrying the world on his shoulders, would like to see Davis of Gaston replace him for the next game.

Lovren MOTM by a mile. Hasn't had a bad game all season and won it for us today. Rock solid and brilliant header.

I was wrong on today, thought we'd get beaten but we stepped up, as well as Liverpool being poor. Only negatives for me were Wanyama continuing to be far too slow at shifting the ball, and Lambo didn't really get in the game but still pulled their defense all over the place.

Great and well deserved result.

Great result - Great performance and another reason to be very optimistic for this season.

As others have said, Lovren is a gem we have unearthed and signed and Osvaldo is now settling and showing all the signs of being a match winner for us.

Great to see the celebrations at the final whistle - Sows the togetherness and team ethic that MP has instilled.

The samaritans will be quiet to night I think.

Actually thought Davis was a key when he came on. Gave us shape in midfield. Also found interesting when Clyne consistently outpaced Liverpool players, can't help wondering how Punch would have done. Still, very positive, and loved Shaw's run. How much did that add to his potential value in Monday's rumours? Ha ha!

This from Liverpool forum: "Kudos to Southampton, they were everything we were not. They won every 1 v 1 duel. They were quicker to every ball. Their pressing from the front was sublime. It looked like we were playing a man down."

This from Scouser Robbie Fowler: no-one really played well but Southampton produced a good workman-like team performance.

Osvaldo was not a disaster at all.
This is my opinion and glad Matt Le Tiss agrees. Was just about to post htat I found your summary excellent bar from your thoughts on Osvaldo. It's early days and I'm sure he's not another Ramrez

Well that was quality, Morgan back to his best, Clyne and Shaw looking unbelievably strong (what i wouldn't have given for that run from Shaw to end in a goal), Lallana running rings round them, Osvaldo unlucky to score on a number of occasions, MP getting his tactics right.

And then...

Lovern. My god what a player we have there, an absolute rock and i'd go farther than comparing him to Killer, i'd say that if he carries on like this we have another Mark Wright on our hands. Utter giant in defence, quick getting back when needed can play the ball out of defence and scored.

Feel a hell of a lot happier than last sunday, let's hope we carry this through to the Palace game and don't get complacent.

For those criticising VW go watch the game again and see the work he does OFF the ball, tracking runners, taking angles to block passes etc. There's good reason were a lot harder to beat than we used to be and he's one of them. Where he is more of an issue is at home where we have to break down teams, there i think there's a case to be made for Cork, Davis or JWP to come in but again if were hard to beat than why change?

I agree, I had wanted Lambert to come off for Ramirez, so that we could see what he could offer this season, but I can't imagine that Ramirez could have added what Davis did. He really brought all of the midfield impetus all the way to their box and made real attacking chances.

Lovren and Fonte seem to be this season's "Schneiderlin and Cork", if that makes sense, they are the breakthrough partnership that's making us a better team. Sadly Schneiderlin and Wanyama feels a bit of a step back from Schneiderlin and Cork. Wanyama isn't a bad player, but Cork has already proved he can play that role very effectively and wanyama really hasn't matched that yet. I think Cork needs to start and Wanyama needs to win his place a bit more.

Boruc was tested enough to have proved that he really is the real deal at this level.

Shaw was great going forward, but should we blame him for Sturridge being wide open in acres of space time and time again. That seemed to be how most of their best attacks began and Lovren was having to take chances by getting stuck in to stave off the danger. Shaw was a joy to watch going forward though. Clyne was excellent in defence and attack and along with Boruc would have been MoM without Lovren's immense display.

Osvaldo is clearly very good and I hope he gets his goal soon, because he seems a bit too desperate to do something spectacular at times, when a simple pass to another, open player would give better odds.

Lallana and JRod didn't do much wrong, but just couldn't break through their defence.

Wasn't it lovely to see JWP easily dispossessing Gerrard?

Cracking win. Gives me bragging rights twice in succession against my Liverpool-supporting friends!

People may point out that we still haven't scored a goal from open play this season, but who cares! It's points that count, and I'm sure we'll rectify that statistic against Palace next week! (The first game I get to see live this season! COYR)

Look at QPR for inspiration - as my colleague pointed out, they're top of the Championship and yet have only managed to score 8 times all season. But they've conceded only 2, and it's the points that count. As long as you have a good defensive structure, you can nick a win, as we've showed against WBA and Liverpool. The goals will come, it's just a case of being patient, and thankfully it's the points we have already that will keep the fan base contented.

Exciting times being a Saints fan, but we MUST follow this up with a win against Palace.

I can see why people may be a little frustrated with him, he's final pass or final decision wasn't always great - but it was his movement and his touches on the break which impressed me the most, some of his touches opened Liverpool right up. He's getting himself in the right area's, and was it not for 2 great saves in the last 2 weeks he'd be sat on 2 goals for us.

Always been a fan of Croatia since Euro 96 and Boban and Asanovic and the likes, so I was delighted with Lovren signed and even happier now! As a defender myself, I (last season esp) used to get so frustrated at positioning in our defence. Im not a pro of course, but most of us can see players in the wrong positions week in and week out over the last few seasons, and at last this season we are sorting it out. Now for a few more goals from open play up the field, but Im sure that will come in time.

One sour note from today. I had Lovren on my bench in my metro fantasy football! DAMN!

Lovren and Fonte remind me so much of Killer and Claus. One outstanding CB whose very presence has raised the other ones game. They also seem to love playing together.

Clyne MOTM for me, he was brilliant. I would have given it to Lovren but tbf Liverpool should have had a penalty when he lunged at Sturridge, and that could have induced a very different result.

I thought we played very well but not getting to high as there is still work to be done offensively. Our attacking 4 showed promise but it isn't quite clicking yet. I can see it happening against Palace where I fancy us to win well.

Quick mention to Steven Davis - when you are 1-0 up away from home, that was as close to a perfect substitute appearance as you can get. Had pace and power on the ball but also harried in defence. In fact MP's subs were all spot on today I thought - something I've criticised him for before.

Osvaldo was unlucky not to score - that was some save from Mignolet.

From a Liverpool fan on F365 forum:

Wanyama was an absolute monster in the middle of the park today. Amazing that someone like Liverpool or Arsenal never picked him up. Top player.

As disappointed as I was last week, I am proud this. Excellent performance, disciplined, well drilled but with quality and ability all over the pitch. Osvaldo is getting closer to that 1st goal and I have a feeling he will go on a run when he gets it. Lovren is just what our defence needed and whilst Wanyama's passing can sometimes disappoint, his destructive work when the opposition have the ball is impressive too.

Now we need to convert some of our chances at home and capitalise on this win by beating Palace midweek.

This. Big Vic's positives far outweigh his negatives.

BBC Sport's so called 'football expert' only got one correct result this afternoon and then didn't get the correct score. His preview of the Liverpool-Saints game wasn't worthy of being published and his prediction "...even without the injured Philippe Coutinho, I would still expect Liverpool to create a lot of chances and win comfortably." could not have been more wrong, since Saints did not only win but did so deservedly and could easily have had 3 goals.

The MotD pundits who are a boring bunch at best are usually at their worst when Lawrenson is propped up in one of the chairs but for once I really do hope he's there tonight!

BTW, Sturridge did not 'go to ground too easily', he dived. That phrase is used by commentators to avoid being sued for libel, but we know it means - dived.

Signing of the season so far, every game hes been decent, today he made two world class tackles and made many more blocks and interceptions, the goal rounded off a top perfomance, how no one else wanted this guy il never know.

Only worrying thing is Lambo not scoring, really hope he gets a goal vs Palace next week he is under more pressure now he is a England international and scored more for England then us so far.

Next week Drop Osvaldo play Davis or Gaston, let Osvaldo play vs Bristol get a goal and he will go on from there.

Funny ol' game footy. Reading some of the comments on his performance last week you might have thought he was one of the worst players to have ever pulled on a Saints shirt.

All he needs is a bit of coaching on how to be more comfortable in possession and for his team mates to present him with more simple passing options. Think he tries to play long slicing passes on the deck that just get mopped up by Prem midfields.

I thought it was a good save at the time, but this photo shows just how good it was. Very athletic, looks like he is only just going to get his fingertips to it, and yet his gets a strong hand on it to direct it well out for a corner. I went for Lovren as MOM, but really it could have been him, Clyne or Boruc... all immense today.

Defence was awesome liverpool only threatened on the break. Wanyama looked like the player I was expecting we signed. Lamber and Osvalsldo can't play together we need one stricker. Davis looked to hold it all together when he came on. Glad to see Cork get such a good reception. Someone please send Osvaldo some new boots these seem unlucky.

Maybe when we play teams that park the bus we need cork as he can play and pass a bit more than Vic and let Wanyama excel when we have to fight more. JRod doesn't seem to shine when he can't interchange to become the focal point which doesn't happen when we play two up top.

Good result good performance. I wonder if we will see much of Gaston this year when t his team plays like this. Lovern proved he has what it takes against the big boys which is the one thing I was waiting to know about him.
