Saint86 Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 Uefa's 54 member associations have given their backing to moving the Qatar World Cup in 2022 to winter after agreeing it cannot take place in summer. "What has come out of this meeting is that the World Cup cannot be played in Qatar in the summer," said Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce. "Everyone was certainly in agreement about that." However, Boyce added that the dates of the competition are yet to be decided. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24160879

angelman Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 Oz, I suspect, will get paid off as in the scheme of things, their £43m that they spent is but a drop in the ocean. It had to be changed, as there was no way that it could happen in summer. We all know that, so it was just a question of a change of date or a change of location. Why you want to hold it in a country of 2 million people that is 30 times the size of the Isle of Wight is anyone's guess, even taking the financial incentives into account. A shame that the game has prostituted itself to money rather than taking the fans into account first - nothing new though.

hypochondriac Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 The thing is I remember when this was first announced that people were saying there was no way they could play it in the summer as it would be too hot and then saying that they will definitely move it to the winter. This will have been fifa's plan all along but they couldn't announce it at the time as it would have been viewed as corrupt.

Fan The Flames Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 Whilst the road to this decision is at bit dodgy I can't see what the big deal is about playing the WC in the winter is. It's not a permanent change, it just happens when the WC is played in that part of the world. With rotation that will not be for another 30 years. Bourne Valley Saint Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 I remember the amount of effort that England put into their bid by giving details of the stadia to be used, the surrounding infrastructure and specific details on the timings, ultimately to be unsuccessful. Qatar on the other hand put in a bid that was impossible for FIFA to turn it down - the only oversight being the lack of facilities (perhaps stadiums being the biggest omission) and when the tournament would actually be played!!. A thoroughly well thought out and comprehensive bid by Qatar - FIFA had no choice but to accept What the criteria was for their acceptance, well we can only guess!!!!!! It certainly wasn't for footballing reasons. The sooner we leave FIFA the better. Perhaps UEFA can stretch their wings and embrace the Americas/Australasias and set up an alternative World Cup! suewhistle Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 Some European leagues have a reasonable winter break over Christmas/January, possibly as long as 4/5 weeks anyway (paging MLG, MLG?), so they'd find it easier to cope with. derry Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 By the middle of October the EPL will have lost a month to friendlies or World Cup qualifiers. The 2022 summer pre season would be international free. Another month out of the EPL season could be rapidly caught up. Making the CL and EL knock outs:lol: would free up a lot of weeks. Be interesting if somebody goes to court on behalf of the countries denied the WC. Although my guess is them being bought off. More likely a collection of clubs/leagues seeking damages. I think it won't happen.

Oh it will get better. There are no hotels. There are no Restaurants. They say they will build them, but the contracts only go to Qatari Owned Companies (see Asian Games). Qatari Companies then sub contract to Specialist Companies. Then they do not PAY them. I know of MANY Companies suing Qatar for the Asian Games and other events. And for the EU fans? US$1500 a night for a hotel room. IF we are still here and IF we aren't any more sh1t than we currently are we can at least commute using Fly Dubai or Air Arabia. Actually it would be the best solution for EU fans TBH
Lord Duckhunter Posted 19 September, 2013 Share Posted 19 September, 2013 It's the world cup, so I've no issue with it being occasionally held in winter. To not do so, would mean certain countries would never have a chance of holding it. The issue here is that this wasn't made clear during the bidding process. I understand that there is some small print in the bid documents which allowed for this change, but everybody had an understanding that this was a june/july world cup. The Arab world is entittled to a world cup ,.and personally I think its great that blatter is willing to make it truly global. However, the underhand corrupt way its been handled stinks.
