Wanyama - initial thoughts

He's a bit raw around the edges but to be fair he is 21 and has just come from the Scottish league.

At the moment he's doing the defensive work just fine making us hard to beat but as he becomes more comfortable with the team and how it plays I think we'll start to see him making more forward runs like he did at Celtic.

You have to be patient with him though, he didn't set the transfer fee - SFC and Celtic did and I trust that the club knows enough to think he'll go on to become a hell of a player for us. I certainly do.

I actually thought in the second half on Sunday he was our best player. Strong, able to ride challenges, athletic, some good passes. Just goes to show, opinions are like ar*eholes, everyone's got one.

I'd agree, thought VW Osvaldo and JWP when he came on were our best players second half

MS was woeful?? Different game than I saw then. IMHO Morgan is better than Wanyama. Therefore he should be the holding midfielder. He was rightly lauded last season, so what do we do? Buy a similar player?? Strange tha!!

The problem he has is not his problem IMO, its because when he gets the ball he does look forward for the pass but there is often little in front of him so he's having to check. Lallana, JRod and MS were woeful against WHU, they should have been offering for a short pass for Wanyama but never did. I thought he did better second half in being more positive in getting forward but we need to start going to more of a 4-1-3-2 type of formation with MS further forward and JWP in the team (who's a better player now that Lallana is IMO). MS looks lost next to him, possibly because he's so good in that def midfield role

Boruc - Clyne Lovren, Fonte, Shaw - VW - JWP, MS, JRod/Lallana, Osv,SRL

+1 His passing was far better than Morgans, Lamberts and Lallanas!

It not his fault we paid 12m for him what is he meant to say Oh no I am only worth 2?

Wanyamas big problem is he is not Jack Cork and that is down to the manager not him, why not play Cork and Wanyama and Morgan in front of them? What has Lallana contributed so far this season?

I think there's a lot of truth in above post. We do need to get JWP in the team and to find a new/adapted role for MS. It seems a lot of people on here expect VW to dribble through an entire defence and start spraying precise 40 yard passes around, due to him costing a lot. However, he was bought to play the role he is performing and block up the middle of the park, which he does well and the defence is better for it. Yes, MS and JC were good last year but opponents just waltzed through central midfield and put us under too much pressure. We had DMs and AMs but nothing really between them and that is why VW is now on the payroll. His role is to win/receive the ball and pass it off to move us forward and the AMs then take over. However, at present there is little movement of people making themselves available to receive 'safe' passes from him, or running into channels for him to attempt something slightly more ambitious. It's all a work in progress right now to get everybody on the same wavelength, but it will come and Big Vic will be an important part of it IMO.

I'm sorry, but that's absolute rubbish - in which games did this happen in?

Agreed. I thought he was excellent in the second half and gave us options from central midfield while also allowing Morgan to get forward more.

West Brom twice - Fulham away
Fulham away? You think they "waltzed through central midfield and put us under too much pressure"?

West Brom at home - Cork only played the first half, but the whole side were awful that day. We were only 1-0 down when he went off.

West Brom away last season - Cork didn't play.

So in effect proving my point for me - we were much, much better last season when we had the partnership of Cork and Schneiderlin together and there were very few instances of opposition teams "waltzing through our midfield" when the two were playing together.

You dont think we were under the cosh first half versus Fulham when they played us off the park?

So Cork never played but they still waltzed through our middle so Victor signing was worthwile then if Cork is not fit?

Has anyone argued the fact that Cork and Schneideling were a good partnership?

If you had read what I put you would of seen I am an advocate of playing all 3!

Thought he was just what we need at West Brom, but at home against West Ham was perhaps not the player to play and he tends to slow things down a little too much. Away a different proposition where he can help very much in stopping oppositions playing. Overall shouldn't be getting all the flak, to be honest.

I think you need to actually read the point I'd originally highlighted and was replying to.
