tisspahars Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 Just wondering if people flit between these (perceived) groups or whether once you're in there is no going back. It's not been a good few years for the bedwetters, so are the people currently saying "you're living in cuckoo land if you think this side will finish top ten" the same people who have made the same accusation re automatic from L1/automatic from FLC/survival last year. We know that for attention seeking/mental health problems a few posters will always look on the side of doom and gloom, but do others flit between the two? For what it's worth I consider myself an optimistic realist (definitely a happy clapper to some) who was confident of most of our successes in recent years, but pleasantly surprised by our Championship season. Saint_clark Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 I'm about the same as you, but this season is a strange sort of apathy for me. I'm fully confident we won't go down but can't see us doing anything of note, so it leaves me going to games with no nervousness/excitement. That all changes once the game kicks off though, and I'm a nervous wreck again.
Barry Sanchez Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 The bedwetters/realists will always win, we have history and a knowledge of Southampton that 17 year old clappers simply do not. Reality tramples upon blind faith and optimism everytime.
BadgerBadger Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 It's quite simple to have a measured and balanced outlook on wherever we're at but football tears the passion out of people which results in very polarised views - gotta love football. Reality tramples upon blind faith and optimism everytime. Well that's clearly BS, because the bed wetters would have had us believe that we would never return to the premier, then never return to the championship, then never survive administration. The only ones who are set in stone are the bedwetters - the ascent to the premier pretty much proves this... every year the same posters moan about the tactics, or the team, or the results like we are getting relegated, regardless of the fact that we went to Wembley and won 2 promotions. They will never change.... in contrast, for the past 4 years the happy clappers have a much higher accuracy in what they have been saying.... ergo, saing that the bedwetters/realists (rofl call ourselves what you will) will always win is ridiculous. They are wrong 99 times out of a hundred, possess an abnormal and annoying stamina to keep going, and will eventually get one right. Meanwhile they **** off 90% of the fanbase. I'll take a happy clapper anyday, at least they can revise their expectations downwards once in a while.
Saint Garrett Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 I thought we'd hit the ground running, especially after the win at WBA, and set us up for a good season challenging for 7th along with Everton, Swansea, and whoever else. (Think the top 6 is too far ahead at the moment) I don't expect us to be involved in a relegation fight though - recent performances haven't been good enough. Having seen us 3 times this season, (WBA, Norwich and WHU yesterday), I think we're still a way off Everton and Swansea, and expect us to be upper bottom half come May. Don't understand the certain posters who come on here to basically say everything is wrong, the club is doing things in the wrong way, our players and the rest of the club is all sh!t. I have nothing against the positive people on here though. I think the majority of people can see we have great potential, but that alone doesn't get you anywhere. And it is this next step that we need to work on.
Barry Sanchez Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 Its simple to me, I look at our first XI and our squad and compare it to others, this simple measure is not absolutely accurate but its based upon something as opposed to blind faith and touching oneself when Ramirez does a sideways pass or Osvaldo flicks his ponytail................. I think you shall find the less optimistic fans are usually correct when it comes to supporting our club, history tells us this, its fact mate not fiction and expectation built upon hope. Reality tramples upon blind faith and optimism everytime. Bedwetters are not realists. Realism sits in the middle of the scale with two clear extremes either side. It's a rare sort that's able to react with complete pragmatism and objectivity when faced with triumph or adversity. By some people's measure they would barely class as a fan. Also a bit strange to imply that age plays a part, especially when older fans have experienced loftier heights than the new breed.
St Marco Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 Or why be either? Why not just be happy when we win and a bit down when we lose? One win does not = we will be the champions of the world and one loss does not = we will be relegated and disappear into oblivion. Some people (the internet) seem to think you should win every single game you play. But yet if you look at the table only two teams remain unbeaten. That means 90% of teams this year have been beaten. I bet if you look on their forums they won't have the kind of threads we have here. The way I see it is I am happy as long as we are going forwards. And I believe we are. Some of what people on here have been saying is just embarrassing. Barry Sanchez Posted 16 September, 2013 Share Posted 16 September, 2013 If the older generation believe this squad will achieve more than the 83-84 team than I would have to agree with you, I dont think many would say that team is better then this. If the clappies are right, everyone wins. If the clappies are wrong, the club and the fans lose. You make the sides of the debate seem a bit childish. There is realism in this debate and there is not, its not negotiable its a given, well until you enter these boards, nothing childish to it as all, their sunshine outlook does not match the reality, its quite simple.
