Liverpool v Saints Build Up

So when a few weeks ago i was shouted down for mentioning the irony that on the day Lambert made his England debut and fans were on here saying how proud they were of him, yet at the same time practically begging the man who could well be his replacement to sign, i was actually right. Those that said i was talking bo*llocks and trolling were actually wrong as both the posts so far are saying Osvaldo should replace Lambert in the starting line up.

I don't think I ever said Lambert is a must play for us - although there is nothing wrong with being really proud of him for getting his England apps and goals. Certain games we're going to need to play on the counter, and I don't think Lambert suits this.

It wasn't particularly directed at you, more of a general comment that when i suggested the player people were begging to sign would replace their hero i was told i was trolling, people were indignant that this would never happen, yet only a few weeks later a large number of people seem to be suggesting just this happens.

This. I don't recall many people calling for Rickie to be "dropped" indefinitely. If our next game was at home to Fulham (for example) then I'd probably have Lambert starting but I just feel away to Liverpool is the type of game where I'd hope to see Ramirez and Osvaldo working off each other well, with Rickie on the bench for impact if we're chasing the game in the second half.

Sorry chaps, maybe im misreading your posts. If Osvaldo hadn't signed who would be playing where you have put him in your matchday XIs?

ahh okay, So Osvaldo is replacing Lambert in your starting line up then. Just as i thought.

No, he's replacing JRod in my line-up vs Liverpool as I'd probably prefer JRod to Lambert if Osvaldo wasn't in the squad (as per my answer to your previous question). There will be other games where I'll prefer Osvaldo over Lambert and some games where I'll prefer Lambert over Osvaldo and other games where I'd play both.

I would suggest Rickie fits Englands tactics better than ours at the moment. Its up to MoPo to be brave by either changing the tactics to suit Rickie or drop Rickie to suit the tactics.

Something needs to change, as we cant score and havnt for a long time.

The last couple of times Rickie was quiet for a period we found out he had an unknown injury, it must be that again then.

Ahh okay, its becoming clearer. You'd do what has only been done on a couple of occasions since Rodriguez has been here and play him up front alone, something MP has never done and you'd leave Lambert on the bench, because he wouldn't have started anyway, that would have been Rodriguez. Gottcha.

So you don't think I should give up the day job then? (Rocket Scientist)

IMHO, definitely need to get Jack Cork back in the team he gives us so much more all-round, and maybe then Morgan can get back to being the dominant force he was last season. I agree with the OP that 3 required in the middle at Anfield, and we have plenty of options up front - and from the bench. Not really important who starts up front but getting a result there would be huge. 4 points dropped in the first 2 home games could made up for with a second away win. And Rickie to score the winner at his spiritual home would perpetuate the fairy tale !!

From what I've seen this season so far, Lallana is the only person who looks capable of beating people and changing the direction of the game, so a bit surprised quite a few on this board want him dropped. We look far too pedestrian going forward and need his or Ramiraz type guile to unlock the door. Anyway of far more importance is any decent Real Ale Boozers in town or near the ground? Don't say Arkles/Shergar or whatever it's called?

Will be very interesting to see what our approach is to this game; will we try and press? Flood the midfield? Who to pick out of Lambert, Osvaldo, Lallana, Rodriguez, JWP, Ramirez. I wouldn't mind seeing Davis get a run out, as he can provide that link between attack and midfield, while still providing a an extra combative body in midfield. Back 5 won't change unless there are any injuries.

Depends which bit of town you're looking at, but it's probably one of the best cities in the country for proper real ale boozers, you'll have plenty to choose from. Nothing decent near the ground as far as I know.

Go to the Ship and Mitre, it's a quality pub - went there for both Everton and Liverpool games last season.

Why does everyone want to drop Rickie? Beyond belief how quickly people change their opinions. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

There I think you have it. No-one who actually watched the game yesterday without a pre-conceived notion could fail to notice that, as ever, he was the leader that made what did happen happen. He came closest to scoring and was instrumental in the build-up to just about every other chance but heh lets change the part of the team that works best. Absolute madness. Much more of this and we will have people going on and on and on about a mangeer that left us 8 months ago!

Won't happen, but I'd like to see:

------------Boruc

Clyne--Fonte--Lovren--Shaw

--Schneiderlin---Cork

Osvaldo-----JWP-----Lallana

----------Lambert

Davis, Chambers, Hooiveld, Wanyama, Davis, Ramirez, Rodriguez.

We need to work hard in midfield, and keep the ball well. Cork and JWP do this well. Wanyama has been so sloppy the last 2, and we can't afford passengers.

I don't think Osvaldo's a Lambert replacement until next season. I also can't see Lambert NOT starting at Anfield, or Ramirez getting near a Saints starting line up away from home for quite a while. And Schneiderlin/Wanyama is absolutely bolted on for away matches when we need a ball-winner.

So I'd go for

----------Boruc

Clyne Fonte Lovren Shaw

-Wanyama Schneiderlin-

Lallana--Lambert--Rodriguez

--------Osvaldo---------

Possibility Ward-Prowse or Davis will replace Lallana or Rodriguez, but I'm not one of these knee-jerk tosspots who thinks specific players I don't like for no apparent reason should get dropped. I would like to see Cork on the bench but he and Schneiderlin got completely owned up there last season anyway. The bench will be the other few Prem quality players we have plus Kelvin and Guly, hoho.

Actually I thought he was as poor as a lot of the others who are getting slated (Lallana and Rodriguez most obviously), but that's no reason to drop him after a hard week , when he'll be rested and highly motivated for this one - plus he won't get hung out to dry up front alone like he was last season there.

I honestly can't see us getting as good a result as our 1-0 hammering last season though, Liverpool have improved a lot more than we have. Though if Sturridge is out we'll have a chance.

I would agree with this. I think we got a glimpse of what we're capable of at the start of the second half yesterday. There was an urgency and an increase in movement which was lacking in the first half. I don't think our problem so far this season has been accommodating Osvaldo and Lambert or the shape of our team in general; our problem has been the pace of our play. When we switch the ball across the back, it needs to be quicker, midfielders need to drop and give the defence options and it generally needs to be more fluid in order to pull the opposition around. J Rod's touch was poor yesterday but I think with his pace in the side we are more capable of playing at a higher tempo. Wanyama was the other poor player but he won't be dropped regardless of how capable I, or anybody else, thinks Cork would be in his place.

This being said, I don't think we'll get anything from our trip to Anfield.

2 strong line-ups. I would be quietly confident of getting something with the first line-up

The team that played on Sunday could easily have had 3 goals if luck had been with them but even if just Lambert's header had gone in the fans' attitude would now be very different. I doubt that Pochettino will make any unforced changes in the starting line-up. He has his settled League side and has only changed it when forced by injuries. I expect him to make tactical substitutions as usual during the game, most likely 2 from JWP, Ramirez or Davis depending on how the game is going with any other subs depending on injury, tiredness or yellow cards. I also feel confident that the Lambert - Osvaldo partnership is going to produce goals. Both were very close on Sunday and another day the on-target attempts will go in.

Boruc

Clyne - Fonte - Lovren - Shaw

Cork - Schneiderlin

Jay Rod - Ramirez - Lallana

Lambert

Subs: Davis, Chambers, Yoshida, Wanyama, S.Davis, JWP, Osvaldo

Never going to happen. Cant see MP leaving 30mill of talent on the bench. This is a Premium fixture and the "big boys " will play.

If it was down to a lot of the folks on here we'd still be searching for chemistry next March.

We've only played four - of which we could easily have won three. We have three high profile new players whose presence changes a lot of things, and our vitally important full back duo are back playing. We're gradually improving, and we created at least four clear-cut chances against WHU but came up against a very hot keeper.

So I can't for the life of me understand why on earth we'd start chopping and changing now.
