Ashley Cole's England place is under threat from Southampton youngster Luke Shaw, NOT Leighton Baines

Southampton youngster Luke Shaw could be the long-term replacement for Ashley Cole according to his Saints team-mate Jack Cork

Jack Cork has warned Ashley Cole his England place is under threat – from Southampton teen *sensation Luke Shaw.

Saints midfielder Cork, 24, played alongside Cole at Chelsea and reckons that 18-year-old Shaw can be his long-term replacement for the Three Lions.

Cork, whose Saints side host West Ham today, said: “Luke can be the future *replacement for Ashley Cole at England.

“If he keeps his head down, doesn’t let anything distract him and keeps *improving like he has been then he can go as far as he wants.”

Whizz-kid Shaw burst on to the scene last season, *attracting the attention of Premier League big guns Manchester United and Arsenal in the process.

Surrey-born Shaw *committed his future to Saints by signing a five year contract in July and made his debut for the England Under-21s against Moldova last week.

Cork added: “Last year he was in the Under-21 develop*ment squad and came in and went straight into the Premier League.

“For any player that is a massive ask and Luke did it brilliantly. No one in the league got the better of him.

“For someone who was 17 at the time to be able to do that is amazing.”

Former England Under-21 star Cork is hoping to make his first Premier League appearance of the season against the Hammers.

Cork says he is relishing the battle with £12m pounds summer signing Victor Wanyama for a starting spot.

Cork said: “At the level we are at now there are always going to be top class signings. Vic is strong and a great player.

“It’s always good to have competition as we *also have Morgan Schneiderlin and *Steven Davis. Hopefully, it will push me to be a better player and play as many games as I can this year.

“We want to improve on last year. We proved that we can do it against the big teams.”

Cork needs to play today
He sure does. We're not the same team without Morgan and Jack linking up in the middle.

I worry that Luke needs to beware of distraction and goes off the rails. He's made a tremendous rise to where he is today, maybe too much too fast. For myself he needs to take a leaf out of his colleague James Ward-Prowse book, who is a model young professional both in and out of playing.

He has so far come across as a level-headed lad, so there is no reason to suspect that he will go off the rails. If he were so inclined, then his head would have been turned by the opportunity to have played for any of the top four glory clubs, yet he decided sensibly to commit his immediate future to us. It seems that the coaching staff that we have in charge of the academy players instill a great attitude into their charges, as well as playing ability.

The difference isn't as great as people make out but JWP is very articulate. Almost obsessed with fitness and is tee total. All reflects his drive to get to the top whereas Luke has a more natural ability mixed with a degree of 'footballing' intelligence.

Same reason he was omitted last week, JWP picked ahead of him for the CM position on the bench.

Laughable. Does MP have a problem with Cork? Everybody could see that his partnership with Morgan worked well so why is he not considering it as an option this season? Further more, how is he not even making the squad?

It's laughable.

Yeah why wasn't cork on the bench today? Vic was pathetic at the passing side of the game and we didn't really need him rushing about trying to hurt people
I do feel we have lost much if not all of the pressing game since Wanyamma has replaced Cork. We have not chased the ball down high up the pitch or won midfield battles as a team. Wanyamma is imo slow on the ball and lacks the technical abilities of Cork. Wanyamma has added noticeable steal to the team but at what cost?
