Huffton Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 OK, I have sigend up to Go Sober For October, a charity raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The challenge, as the title gives away, is to drink no alcohol for the whole month of October. So if anyone would like to sponsor me in what will be quite a feat for me:rolleyes: the link is: https://www.gosober.org.uk/profile/paulhoughton Thanks in advance! Turkish Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 It's an honourbable charity but seriously, sponsoring people not to put posion inside their bodies for a month, WTF? THis will be followed by a Movember, where blokes have the virtually impossible task of not shaving their upper lip for a month, wow, how will they manage it, great opportunity for lots of "selfies" on facebook though FFS. Its absolutely the ridiculous the things people are getting sponsored for the these days. My most hated though has to be "sponsor me to climb Killmangiro" and that type of thing. Claims they are doing it for charity, yeah right, having a holiday and trying to make themselves feel good about it. FFS

Turkish Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Look out for my begging sponsorship thread next week. Going to be saving little kids lives while risking mine I'm off to the Domican Republic for two weeks soon and will be looking for sponsors to help me swim with dolphins, the money collected will go towards funding a trip to Peru where i will follow the Inca trail to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Turkish Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 How do marathons sit with you Turkish? Seeing as I'm planning one next year, for charity? at least a marathon requires considerable training and effort and is an achievement, it would be a different story if it was a 5k run. Turkish Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Wow. But then again did I really expect anything different To be told that if you need to be sponsored not to drink for a while then Maybe you have bigger issues than you realise? niceandfriendly Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Agree with Turkish completely here. Being sponsored not to drink alcohol for a month? Is that really a challenge for some people? Goodness.
Huffton Posted 13 September, 2013 Author Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Or maybe as someone who is never going to able to run a marathon or climb Kilimanjaro I saw an opportunity to get involved and raise some money for a very worthwhile cause. As I said it was naive of me to put it on here as I should have guessed the reaction it would get. Ive got better things to do with my life than sit here and bicker with the likes of you Turkish. Enjoy your internetting, I'm out of here. Mods, please feel free to delete this thread.

View From The Top Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Whilst I applaud the OP for wanting to raise cash for a worthy cause I have to say WTF is so hard about not drinking for a month?! As for Movember, I'd been doing it for a few years, unsponsored, simply to raise awareness of male cancers, which allowing for where I work and the male members of my family that it's claimed, seems appropriate. I'll be after sponsorship next year, for a local kids hospice & H4H, ahead of a f**k off big bike ride!

I would genuinely struggle to do it and actually both you and Macmillan will benefit from doing it. I know my wife would sponsor me.
Colinjb Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 I can see both points of view here, but i'm favouring the one that shows a guy with a vice try to shake it. I wish you luck Huffton, this is something that could be of good to yourself and the charity. Hope it goes well.

Yeah but c98.73% of people would just do it quietly and donate the money they saved on booze to charity. Not ask for sponsorship

Not ask for sponsorship Don't ask, don't get. Every little helps. And if it gives him extra incentive along with helping a more then worthwhile cause, why not! Not ask for sponsorship I might be in the 1.27% but I would probably need the publicity to ensure that the humiliation of failure would give me the willpower?
