Saint Garrett Posted 12 September, 2013 Share Posted 12 September, 2013 What a fantastic player he's been for us. 104 goals and a huge contribution to where we are now. Best value signing we've ever made?

SaintBobby Posted 12 September, 2013 Share Posted 12 September, 2013 Matt Le Tissier on a free from Vale Rec is probably our best signign ever. But Lambert has definitely been one of the best.
Charlie Wayman Posted 12 September, 2013 Share Posted 12 September, 2013 Ricky is one player who will be very genuinely mourned once he hangs up his boots. Whenever that far off time might be I for one would love him to be part of the permanent staff here at SMS or Staplewood. Not obviously coaching material a la Davies but hosting or something on the PR side. For now 'though just give us another 100 goals to enjoy. And there was a young lad we signed from Orcheston.... BUT without doubt RL is up there with the best, in my lifetime that includes Big Ron, and Alan Ball (£60,000 for a player who drove and inspired us to promotion, then played his part in us becoming a top side for a few years,). Sheaf Saint Posted 12 September, 2013 Share Posted 12 September, 2013 Pahars was better, depends how much his fee would be in todays market though. Pahars was undoubtedly a more skillful player, but he was in and out of the side through injury far too much and we never really got to see a full season of peak performance from him. Lambert may not have the same technical ability, but his overall contribution to our meteoric rise back up the leagues makes him a much better value for money signing in my view. He played over 30 games a season in his first 3 full seasons and averaged a goal every three games, which was excellent considering how crap we were then. He was quality for us in his first few seasons and injuries only really took their tool in the second season at SMS.

Saint J 77 Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 (edited) Rickie for me is a better player than pahars! I agree, it definitely has to be Rickie over Pahars! For value for money, what he has personally achieved and what he has helped the club achieve in his time here! It would be nice if he could cap his 200th appearance against West Ham with his first premier league Hat-trick Edited 13 September, 2013 by Saint J
John Boy Saint Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 I don't think, in these days of Football mercenaries and Prima donnas, after being blessed with Matt Le Tissier that any of us would have thought we would ever see another talismanic down to earth player, who is adored by so many of us, pull on a Saints number 7 shirt again. Dan Johnson Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Lambert had allot to live up to when he was given the number 7 shirt, he has excelled all expectations so comprehensively that he’s more than secured his place in Southampton FC folklore. All Hail SRL Appreciate it, because I think his days are numbered, as exceptional as he's been for us, there's no room in football for centiment and I think once Osvaldo settles, the way Ricky Lambert plays wont fit in with our continental style of play
a1ex2001 Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Rickie for me is a better player than pahars! Perfectly ridiculous but each to their own. Rickie is a really good player and I've loved having him in the team and will continue to do so but Pahars was exceptional if you took the player he was when he first joined us and put him into the English third teir records would have tumbled, I think the injury scared spell at the end of Pahars time has clouded peoples minds! I think there's an arguement to be had there to be honest Lambert - Apperances - 197 Goals - 104 Marian Pahars - Apperances 137 Goals - 43 It's hard to compare the 2 as they're different types of player but i think they equally contributed to the club. Saint86 Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Lambert has never stood in front of a united centre back twice his side at old trafford. Paused with the ball at his feet, locked in a close quarters, eye to eye mind battle, before poking it through his legs and smashing the ball into the net, all to the anguished amazement of old trafford. That said you have to love lambert for his passion and the fact that he has almost single handily dragged us through 3 divisions.
Saint Malc Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 Lambert is a much better player than Pahars ever was IMO. Top 5 real Saints legends worthy of the name in chronological order in my Saints supporting time: Ron Davies Mick Channon Steve Williams Matt Le Tiss Rickie Lambert Pahars would not be one of them. ant Posted 13 September, 2013 Share Posted 13 September, 2013 (edited) That's league apps So it is, fair dos. Nonetheless all three are players we've been very fortunate to have at our disposal - and for a longstanding period by our post-2005 standards. Adam and Kelvin will be even be due testimonials if they're still here in 2016. Edited 13 September, 2013 by ant
