Polish keeper to deny England, 40 years on??

Possibly some deja vu coming up on Tuesday October 15th, brings back memories of 1973, England had to win against a 'clown' in goal!

Step up Artur Boruc!!

Was Shilton a Saints player at the time?

For the younger chaps among us, what happened in 1973?

Polish bloke who Clough described as a clown stopped everything we could throw at him for 90 minutes at Wembley, a really amazing performance, some fantastic saves. Went to the game myself, England had about 100 chances with Chivers,Channon and Clarke in attack, bloke saved them all, some of them pretty miraculous, must be some UTube footage of it somewhere.

here you go,

Only 9 years too early. He was at Stoke at the time. Then Forest in 1977 before us.

Jan Tomaswepski or whatever his bloody name is..... couldn't name you any other Polish player..... but he is forever ingrained...... bloody awful night......

you've forgotten the other unforgettable Polish player from that era Wlod Lubanski, destroyed England all by himself in the away fixture.

It would be ironic though if Lambert had to score past Boruc to get England to qualify! I bet poor old Mick Channon still has nightmares about that evening, spooky that its nearly the same date as well, 15th instead of the 17th!

And a shame to see the FA hasn't changed in those 40 years!

I was there and also the month before when we stuffed Austria 7-0. Used all our goals/luck up in the wrong game.

As my first WC was 66 followed by a decent showing in 70 it was inconceivable that we wouldn't qualify.

Indeed, Hunter was selected instead of both Bobby Moore and the far more elegant and cultured Colin Todd, Hunter gave the ball away for their goal, Tomazewski wouldn't have mattered but for that monumental error. Todd wouldn't have lost that ball.

This is NOT going to end well.

As I have posted before.

The wife is a Saints Fan.

She is also Polish. Bonkers Boruc is a National Treasure for being, well, Boruc.

God if it is a Winner takes all situation......... still have nightmares about John Motson's commentary even today

Didn't somebody lose the ball over on the side by the Royal Box and before you could say Nooooo the ball was in our net? (Hunter by above accounts)

Yup scored by Domarski I recall who became the Polish treasure of his time (not quite as famous as Lubanski!)

I was there - their keeper was a joke but had a night that is a one off - he dived the wrong way for one shot and it hit him on the ass and went over the bar. From memory Mick Channon missed 5 easy chances

I picked him up from the airport this morning when he returned from Italy. I can tell you he had a big grin when talking about the upcoming match. He wasn't aware that Rickie had played the whole game last night and hopes they face each other. To say he is looking forward to the match is very much an understatement!

He is the kind of character that could have an absolute blinder. Seem like nice guy?

Some of those saves were things he didn't even know about..like a shot hitting his body, when he was laying on the ground and the ball going over the bar.

Hitting his knee when he fumbled it and rolling to safety .and the stuff he missed (and there were a few of those).....were cleared by defenders around him.

Probably one of the most one-sided matches I've ever seen; the shot tally was .....41-3 . (yes forty-one).

Poland scored from a breakaway , England got a penalty and the final score was 1-1.. when we needed to get a win.

We failed to go to the Finals and Poland went instead and went out at the group stage. URRRRRGH !:frown:

They won their group, and finished second in the "semi-final" group. They beat Brazil to finish 3rd.

I follow Arthur Borucs career closely and saw him play in a match for Southampton v arsenal in December. He was awful, spilt every cross, looked out of shape, nervous and couldn't catch a cold. If lambert can't score at least four against this CLOWN he is not international standard.

What does your "friend" say about him?

Wasn't Tony Curry playing that night and fired in a 30 yard thunderbolt which either the keeper saved or it hit the woodwork?

Yes and its Currie.

(Made me feel quite hungry that has.)

Um.....failing memory - wrong World Cup..I missed that one - didn't I ? Obviously the goalie comtinued his "clown act "....

Omg, 40 years ago and that 'clowns' name will never going leave my memory box! The game could have lasted another week and England would not have scored! He just had one of those incredible nights.

They probably would have made the final if it were not for the horrific tackle by Roy McFarland on Lubanski, put him out for about 2 years IIRC.

If only you were young and guaranteed to improve as well there might be a place for you in our squad.

Currie was MLT of his day, in terms of style - at least he made me follow Leeds as a nipper coz of the way he played.

Don't forget Shilts let it under his body too....
